Wild animals on the increase in Switzerland

September 14, 2012 SWITZERLANDWild animals including bears, wolves and jackals are on the increase in Switzerland, a government agency said Friday, as it reported a spike in the figures across the country. “The development is spectacular,” said Reinhard Schnidrig, who heads the Federal Office for the Environment’s department for hunting, wild animals and biodiversity. “All species are growing in number in one way or another,” he told the Le Temps daily. “Bears are returning each year in summer” and wolves had “started to reproduce on Swiss soil,” he said. In addition, he said, the first golden jackal had made its way to Switzerland in recent weeks from the Balkans, while lynxes, wild cats and foxes were also prospering. Even beavers were “testing the air” in Switzerland, he said. Reports of wild animal sightings are common in Switzerland, where many carnivores are protected. One of the reasons for the sudden increase in the numbers of wolves appeared to date back to the arrival of the first females in 2006, Schnidrig said. Females were less likely to move on than more itinerant males, he explained. “Bears share the same kind of behavior,” he said, adding that female bears had also been making their way to Swiss territory. With the first wolf litters born in the country this year, “we have entered a new era. Wolves will only go on growing in number,” Schnidrig said. Growing forest cover and an abundance of prey such as deer were together facilitating the rise in wild carnivores in Switzerland, he added. He cautioned however that while most wild animals represented no threat to people ‘bears are different’ as they were “less predictable” than most other animals. –Physics

How is Switzerland, a small country, able to give such welcome and badly needed relief to wildlife.? For me, at least, it a bit of upbeat news, and a small relief from all the chaos around us at the moment.
And yes, I do realise that the day could come when are in competion for survival against animals such as these. But not today.
We did not create them, and we do not own the Earth, we just share it with them. (And if we are top of the food chain then in a way we are guardians) So it’s pretty cool to see a post, that says some of these wonders are making a comeback. Only my opinion.

On our land in Massachusetts we have several black bears living near us. We see them often just wandering around our lawn. We respect them by giving them space, so they are no harm to us. They pay very little attention to us when we are outside with them. We do not feed them. We put our urine around our gardens and it keeps them out of our berry patches.

In an earlier post someone mentioned the food chain. I have never thought of man as being at the top for a lot of reasons. Today we are protected by habitat, but my thinking is with all things being equal (and someday it probably will be again), man will become prey to many in the equation. Size speed and power (to mention a few) would move us down a notch or two.

Appreciate the report … Maybe forest and wooded areas affected by fires, drought and added unusual atmosphere anomaly are driving the creatures inward ..

We get news report of what’s happening and changes taking place in occupied communities and round about wooded areas .. I often wonder what these relocating animals would tell us if they could speak our language …

predators are just that. An increase inpredators equals a decrease in their prey. When their natural prey is decimated they will turn to livestock, pets & humans. In recient times several humans in the USA have been attacked and killed by bears, cougars &alligators. The wolves in the lower 48 are killing livestock. We have black Vultures that kill baby calves and deer. they peck their eyes out and the animal goes into shock and dies. Its not all good news.

THANK HEAVEN THE ANIMALS ARE RETURNING TO SWITZERLAND. ALL CREATIONS HAVE THE RIGHT TO LIVE, AND BE HAPPY! WE OWE NOTHING! WE BORROW TODAY’S NATURE TO ENJOY AND PASS IT ON TO OUR CHILDREN TO ALSO CARE AND PROTECT THEM!!!

Some people do not understand that we are allowed to see and experience the wonder of a speices different from us. Everything is a threat, never a treat. And it’s sheer arrogance to belittle animals that God created to live side buy side with us. Just hope that 50 years from now this argument is still taking place. Otherwise our kids will have lost a lot of the wonder and beauty that we have today.
