California earthquake swarm felt in Arizona, Mexico, USGS says

August 26, 2012LOS ANGELES, CAThe series of moderate earthquakes — including several magnitude 5.0 and above — were felt as far north as Orange County, east into Arizona and south into Mexico, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The USGS recorded more than two dozen earthquakes in Imperial County, many of them near Brawley. Officials said people reported feeling the quake in Yuma, Ariz., Lake Havasu as well as in Baja California. The USGS’s “Do You Feel It” system shows the quakes were felt as far away as San Diego, Temecula and San Clemente. The 5.4 quake was also felt in Moreno Valley, Indio, National City and Palm Desert. The quakes could be felt in the press box at the Del Mar Race Track in neighboring San Diego County, where the $1-million Pacific Classic is scheduled later Sunday. Between 10 a.m. and 12:50 p.m., the same area was shaken by quakes ranging in magnitude from 2.0 to 5.4, the USGS reported. The burst of quakes took place roughly 16 miles from El Centro and 92 miles from Tijuana. In the last 10 days, there have been six earthquakes of magnitude 3.0 or greater centered nearby. There were no immediate reports of serious damage or injuries from the temblor, though reports were still coming in. The border region is known for frequent seismic activity, though the size of these quakes is larger than typically seen. –LA Times
SAN DIEGO, CA — A series of earthquakes – some only seconds apart – has rattled rural areas of Imperial and San Diego counties. Paul Caruso with the U.S. Geological Survey says the first quake struck at 10:02 a.m. Sunday about three miles north-northwest of Brawley. It was followed by a 3.4 quake about 90 seconds later in the same area near the southern end of the Salton Sea. Magnitude 2.2 and 2.0 quakes followed within six minutes of the first shock. In the hour after the first earthquakes, at least 10 more quakes struck the same approximate epicenter about 16 miles north of El Centro. The largest quakes, a 5.3 and a 4.9, struck about two minutes apart just after 12:30 p.m. So far, more than 20 quakes greater than 3.0 in magnitude have shaken the region over a three-hour period. A sheriff’s dispatcher says there have been no reports of damage or injuries. Caruso says scientists aren’t yet sure what fault the quake cluster was on but they are near the 800-mile San Andreas Fault. –Bakersfield Now

So, could this be the answer to the booming/loud noises reported earlier on this site?

Alvin I have been watching this unfold all day! I’ve never seen anything like it. I’ve been going back and forth to earthquake report and they just wrote back in the 70s and even in the thirties ( I think) there were swarms. I’m just learning about this area and to me, it’s alarming. What are your thoughts?

I think the 92% of Californians polled in 2011 by ABC News, who said they knew the big ones were coming, but were not prepared for them…better educate themselves very quickly on earthquake survival and its aftermath. California municipalities are declaring bankruptcies left and right; so there will be less and less state resources available to allocate or respond to a crisis situation. Then, we’re going to see massive migrations.

Once the geology of California really awakens; it’s not going to rollover and go back to sleep this time.

When you watch these quakes roll in every couple of minutes, I kept thinking birthing pains. There have been what was called swarms of EQ in Oklahoma for a couple years now, but nothing like what is happening in california now.

      • It’s worrisome because it’s along one of the most dangerous faults in the northern hemisphere. You want to monitor it with the gravest concerns without wanting to cause a panic. I’m sure there are a lot of people monitoring the situation who probably won’t sleep much tonight.

excuse me…WHAT??? How is this even possible? It’s not like there haven’t been large earthquakes in cali in recent times so what is up with the mass unpreparedness?! I guess people over there are really in denial!

I pray that it isn’t something related to anything more serious. CNN was saying that these earthquakes could be pre-quakes leading to something bigger. How can they not know what fault is generating these? Alvin thanks for the post! I Live in San Clemente, Ca and have felt most of the quakes while I was watching football in my recliner.

Hundreds of quakes!!!!! 1.7’s to 5.6 downgraded to 5.4 but are ongoing as I type….Dutchsinse posted a few minutes ago and discusses the swarm….I’m in Bakersfield, haven’t felt anything as yet…but I predict a rather significant quake in to SD, LA, and ultimately SF counties…this thind is BIG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!….I have been watching CA eq’s for 17+years……something is going on….the best we can hope for, is that this area is a geothermal field, and that pressure will ultimately relieve itself….if not…….Calfornians get ready for the SHTF!!!!!!!!!!!…(San Andreas Fault).
Notes: Go to USGS earthquakes USA:,;click the area on the map…should show Map centered @ 33N x 115 W; click list of Earthquakes on this map……………Thanks for your attention

      Alvin,
Is the earth getting ready to shift? This reminds me of the movie twenty twelve.

      • Well, what I’ve been saying is I think we are moving from the periphery of the Holocene towards a new geologic age, and that will be defined by a series of large, dramatic geological events. Every indication we’ve seen, over the last 2 years, shows a growing restlessness with the planet, and that it’s waking up to a potential cyclical shift.

Hey Doc, stay safe and please get prepared if you aren’t already. This Planet means business and you are right, something is going on! The huge sink hole in louisiana along with the hurricane to be had me already on edge wondering… What’s going to happen. Now this just happening four hours ago. Lots of EQs to keep up with today. Wouldn’t care to be working on a Sunday with all this activity in one state alone. Hopefully this has nothing to do with volcanism.

It’s amazing, in the bible Jesus says dont let yourself be lulled to sleep.. worrying about all worldly things around you. People are not paying attention to the signs. The signs are EVERYWHERE and people are blinded.

I took a photo of a strange rainbow cloud over this area last weekend. Compared to the China earthquake lights before the big one hit there a few years back, the looked identicle. I posted these pics as well as quakes occurring in an arc around the Salton Sea. Ive been feeling these quakes all day. Very sharp, fast moving shakes. I live about 60 miles as the crow flies from epicenter. Might be a sleepless night.

I feel the same way about California however I am not going to limit the activity to just the California area. I was a bit captured by the Virgin Island activity — The 2 Baja quakes preceding this swarm caught my eye — based on a hunch I have been looking for a specific combination. Though the size of the swarm suprises me it only convinces me that we may be in for the ride our lives Nationally. I live by bench marks and am happy when they don’t happen — but I have the end of this month and September on the calendar for right now (again I will be okay with being wrong). I have to say I have been waiting for this one though.

Ok, so we have a hurricane on the way in and California having earthquake swarms… what next??! I wonder if there are any more Russians parked off the coast, too? Anyone read The Harbinger by Jonathan Cahn? Seems like God has warned the USA, and we did not repent as a nation…

Alvin any possibility of a volcano lurking under
This area? This area does have some thermal features.

In a manner of speaking, the whole southern region of California is like one giant volcano, simply because there are so many large faults systems riddled through the underlying geology and we don’t know how compromised they really are. The landscape also is divided by the San Andreas strike slip fault system. There is an unknown magma plume chamber that is fueling the Long Valley supervolcano system. It’s possible we may be in the preliminary stages of a some type of rifting process that might be starting to occur along the Salton Sea, as the increased turbulence from the opposing Pacific and North American plates disrupt the California land mass. In 2005, to the utter astonishment of geologists around the world, the Dabbahu volcano tore a 35 mile-long gash in East Africa in a matter of days. Let’s see what happens from here with this swarm.

Looks like we just had a 5.2 magnitude earthquake in the Gulf of California, south of the swarm, near San Felipe – another stress break trying to alleviate the tension.
