Mysterious Louisiana sinkhole raises concerns of explosions and radiation

August 14, 2012LOUISIANAA nearly 400-foot deep sinkhole in Louisiana has swallowed all of the trees in its area and enacted a mandatory evacuation order for about 150 residences for fear of potential radiation and explosions. The 400-square-foot gaping hole is in Assumption Parish, La., about 50 miles south of Baton Rouge. The sinkhole sits in the middle of a heavily wooded space where it has consumed all of the soaring cypress trees that had been there. Flyover photos show some of the treetops still visible through the mud. Authorities enacted a mandatory evacuation for between 100 and150 homes in the area, but most people have chosen to stay, according to the Mayor’s Office of Emergency Preparedness. If any of the dangers seem to become more imminent, the order will be escalated to a forced evacuation. While officials are not certain what caused the massive sinkhole, they believe it may be have been caused by a nearby salt cavern owned by the Texas Brine Company. After being used for nearly 30 years, the cavern was plugged in 2011 and officials believe the integrity of the cavern may have somehow been compromised, leading to the sinkhole. On Thursday, Louisiana’s Department of Natural Resources required that Texas Brine drill a well to investigate the salt cavern as soon as possible, obtain samples from the cavern and provide daily reports on their findings. It could take up to 10 days to set up the drilling process, even with an expedited process. “We have to arrange for the driller. We have to pick a location. We have to be very careful to not be in a point that’s too close to the sinkhole because of the weight of the rig,” Texas Brine Company spokesman Sonny Cranch told ABCNews.com today. “We don’t want to aggravate the situation.” The sinkhole is on the outside edge of the salt dome where this particular brine well is located. “There are some indications that it very well may have been connected, but there’s just indications,” Cranch said. “There’s nothing concrete that has connected the sinkhole to the cavern.” There was bubbling in the water and the sinkhole is near areas where there has been exploration for oil and gas in the past, which would make the presence of low levels of naturally occurring radioactive material (NORM) possible. The state’s Department of Environmental Quality said water samples from the sinkhole showed oil and diesel on its surface, but initial readings did not detect radiation. –ABC News

The BP oil disaster is back and it is going to get nasty. The high press/high temp oil has been melting the frozen methane deposit. This causing the earthquakes and roilging of the waters. Click my name for more info.

      Caroline,
I find Idahopicker’s video interesting to say the least. at the 6:35 minute mark he talks about the “effects” of butane. 1. He is stating the effects of frozen liquefied butane (hence frostbite). That has nothing to do with butane at air temperature. 2. Butane has specific flammability limits known as the lower and upper explosive limits. If the mixture is below the lower explosive limit (LEL), the mixture is too lean. If it is above the upper explosive limit (UEL), it is too rich. The flammable range (1.8-9%) would have to be met to be explosive (must also have enough oxygen compared to butane). 3. When it comes in contact with air it does not explode, it has to be heated to 550 degrees Fahrenheit. You still need a ignition source once the mixture is perfect before 550 degrees. 4. Butane is heavier than air, thus it lays in low lying areas, it does readily expand into the atmosphere. 5. So if it does not explode… “it will be very bad” so… butane is known as a simple asphyxiant, which means it displaces the oxygen in your body and you suffocate more or less. At 10,000 ppm you start to notice the effects. At around 270,000 ppm it leads to greater health effects such as death.Just for reference the toxicity of butane, Hydrogen Sulfide at 600-700ppm can cause death. So how do you get that high of a concentration? A confined space or walking into a low lying area that is near a pit of a recently collapsed area.. Walking on planet earth is not a confined space… They will also have air monitoring I can only imagine going on constantly by Certified Industrial Hygienist’s to keep personnel safe. Also for his calculations… how on earth can he possibly calculate anything without knowing what is pumped into the well. FYI- They can drill much fast than his “40 days”. I am not going to even touch on his radiation or any other facts of his. Not trying to insult anyone, just giving some facts. All the information is listed on a MSDS online for butane. Be careful on what you listen to as factual. I am not ruling our any possibility for an explosion, just showing some flaws in the video.

Thanks, Caroline Leavitt, for the heads-up on the video.

I bet that, if Texas Brine were called to drill where oil had been discovered, set-up operations would take less than ten days. . .more like two.

“Piehler said the deeper points may be “rabbit holes” or cracks that reach deeper into the earth than the rest of the sinkhole. He noted that the deepest point was also near where some of the bubbling in the sinkhole is occurring.”
Anyone can tell me what kind of rabbits can dig holes 400 deep? that is so stup….d…

    “The cavern has failed!”

“Salt Dome/Cavern is caving in. Resident Briefing
If the one cavern is caving in, then it is highly concerning that others are damaged and may cave as well. Like the ones full of Butane, natural gas, and nuclear wastes.”
