Japan creates prototype for world’s first giant boarding armed robot

August 13, 2012TOKYO A massive robot that can carry a seated human pilot – and is armed with twin Gatling guns – has gone on show in Japan. Kuratas is described as the world’s first giant boarding robot, no doubt inspired by the ‘mechs’ of Japanese anime and manga comic book culture which features human controllers inside a walking vehicle. But Kuratas is different in that it offers two types of control system. The robot can be piloted directly or remotely by a user connected to a 3G device such as a laptop, tablet or Smartphone. The firm that made the robot, Suidobashi Heavy Industry, even released a tongue-in-cheek video showing how to operate the robot. It was unveiled to the world at the Wonder Festival in the Tokyo suburb of Chiba. Kuratas, which is referred to as the Vaudeville project in a promotional video, has two humanoid arms and four wheeled legs – and twin six-barreled Gatling guns – which fire BB-sized pellets at the rate of 6,000 rounds per minute. According to Suidobashi, the weapons are fired when the operator smiles – a system known as ‘the smile shot.’ Onlookers immediately likened the presence of the guns to the bipedal ED-209 from Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 movie Robocop. The device, which travels at just 7mph, can be set to move in a low or high position to enhance the pilot’s field of view. It also features a Lohas launcher – which fires bottles of water – and Iron Crow hands and ‘feet.’ The robot is huge – measuring four metres in height and weighing four tones. But it also comes with a suitably huge price tag, setting potential purchasers back $1m (£637,000). However, anyone wanting to buy one of the custom-built machines does have a choice of colors – including pink. –Sky News

I wish Japan/Nikon would get their butt in gear and start producing more Nikon D800’s which I have been waiting on for months.

Aw, it has “mini” guns. Just like the Cylons….

While it may be presented in the cutesy video as “mostly harmless”, I bet a box of doughnuts that those non-lethal weapons systems prove “mostly temporary”.

Right, an army more of these robots and they can be programmed to tidy-up Fukushima ! If not, don’t waste my time Japan with showing of new technology while old technology has not been mastered yet. The audacity of these people !!! Keep safe all, and keep on prepping.

I’ve watched many of the Japanese anime shows that feature large robots controlled by humans. I was always wondering how long it would take before someone developed something like this. Interesting. Frivolous, but interesting.

But I wouldn’t make a good candidate to operate one of these machines. I like to smile too much. Guess I’d be mowing everyone down. 🙂

Is this the unveiling to the next XBOX or PS3? I think these guys may have played way too many video games or they may have seen the Robo-Cop movies too may times and developed some kind of psychotic fetish!

With all the sickness, disease, and hunger, nice to know our priorities are in line. Japan’s debt is worse than the USA.

Wow! Talk about the film ‘Terminator’! Cant see much use of that on a battle field though, as its a big target! No problems that a tank shell will be able to solve on that one.

  10. I don’t think Isaac Asimov would be thrilled, still if armies of robots are to fight armies of robots we could bring our troops home to join the massed ranks of the unemployed. Surely the true purpose of technology is to free each human being from the drudgery of labour to allow he and she to search for the meaning and purpose of his, or her, existence; each as an intelligent, aware creative individual?
Otherwise with the advent of ‘born-to-be-milked’ human tax-paying workers being replaced en-masse by non-tax-paying robots ownd by manufacturers across the planet we human 99% will rapidly become surplus to the requirements of the elite 1%.
    Is everybody happy?

so very well said, David. IMAGINE IF… with all the people in the world (I’m referring to the little people – the unemployed – the worker bees, etc. etc. etc.) and all the technology at our finger tips EVERYONE should be living the life of leisure and exploring our universe. HOW?? We get rid of the fiat money and we all JOB SHARE to keep the machine going. Pick what interests you – get trained – put your required time in – and spend the rest of the time learning/exploring/traveling/raising children….. I bet we could come up with a 3 – 6 month working schedule and a 6 month “time off” schedule

I wish everyone here would go to their town libraries and put up a sign asking if “anyone out there interested in exploring another way of living?” — or something like that. See who shows up. I bet you’d be surprised. ‘

EVERYONE I speak to lately feels the same way. We complain that too many people refuse to wake up, when if fact, that’s just our excuse for not doing anything either, imho. They are awake. They’re just too tired, too depressed, too scared and feel too overwhelmed to do anything about it. Let’s show them the way — rather — let’s SHOW EACH OTHER THE WAY

      • I like your reply and each of us has first to become observers of ‘Self’ instead of always looking outwards for guidance. A good start is to learn to seperate your needs from your desires and then you soon realise how you’re conned into believing you must have the latest this or that

That looks like the armed robot in the beginning of Robocop 1 that malfunctioned and killed a man. “You have 10 seconds to comply” It gave me nightmares as a kid and now we’re looking at a real life one.

    WHY o_o

Wouldn’t a Motorcycle with weapons attached be much less expensive and easier to maneuver? I’m pretty sure a giant piece of scrap metal moving at 7MPH would be destroyed withing seconds of deployment in a battlefield.
