Previously extinct volcano raised to ‘eruption warning’ level in Colombia: eruption would be first in recorded history

August 9, 2012 COLOMBIAThe recent increase in seismic activity under Sotarà volcano prompted INGEOMINAS to raise the alert level from yellow (unrest) to orange (eruption warning) yesterday afternoon. The increase had been detected on June 24, 2012 and since that date, 6891 earthquakes have been recorded, i.e. an average of 150 quakes per day. Most of them (5177) are of very small magnitude, but the remaining 1714 quakes were of significant energy (local magnitudes 0.1-2.2) and concentrated in an area between 0.1 and 5 km northeast of the volcanic summit at depths between 2 and 6 km. None of these events were felt by inhabitants of the communities surrounding the volcano Sotará. The deformation network shows a possible inflation process towards the northeast sector of the volcano, which correlates with the epicentral zone of seismicity reported and suggest that magma is rising there, and might (or might not) lead to an eruption in a near to medium future. During the month of July geochemical surveys showed no significant changes in temperatures of hot springs in the area. INGEOMINAS stresses that this activity does not pose any immediate danger to the communities around the volcano. However, it should be said as well that this could change quickly.  –Volcano Discovery
Volcano was believed to be extinct, so any eruption would be the first known in recorded history.

Many history making events will surely happen in our life for sure.

I wonder how many “previously extinct” volcanos have become “un-extinct”? If this becomes a new trend, it bodes ill for the entire planet…

I learned some time ago to never assume that a volcano is “extinct”, to look at it as merely dormant. People who believe a volcano is extinct, will be in for a rude awakening.

A little more data: According to Wikepedia, they list approx 160+ “extinct” volcanoes in the world – based on scientists stating that they lack a magma supply. I’m sure they’ve missed a few in their list…

What amazes me is the speed at which its all unfolding. At times I’ve wished my mind was just exaggerating the situation, due to all of the “2012” hype…but then I give my head a shake lol.

yes and seeing how quickly things are escalating is sobering. also, i think it’s interesting (and not surprising) how the mainstream media is completely ignoring changes in volcanoes and earthquake activity…

You know something is up when we have extinct volcanos coming alive and erupting.

I think soon the west coast volcanic mountain ranges will soon be activated as well, as the “extinct” volcanos are showing evidence of unrest.

To those who wish to keep informed on extreme weather and earthquakes happening around the world, there a 2 ways to find it. Google- Earthquakes last 7 days and Google -Extreme weather last 7 days. You will see how extensive our weather and enviornment is changing. There are many clusters of earthquakes happening which tells me the plates are in for a major shift. I believe that Japan and California are in for massive destruction due to this major shift.
The extreme weather is due to people with their over indulgences, wreaking havoc on the natural flow of Nature. God is the only power thats going to get us out of whats coming, so get ready for an extremely bumpy ride. It’s not going to be pretty for a good long time.

There might not be a such things as extinct volcanoes nor dormant. Deep in the ground there is probably lava flow. Certain natural gases might activate a long time dormant sleeping volcano. However there are many factors beyond the earth natural gases, sulphur of certain forms, etc. A supervolcano like Yellowstone could have many multiple magna chambers and routes. A new magma chamber could form under a supposed extinct volcano. Virginia has two supposed extinct volcanoes and earthquake activity has happened. If not incorrect extinct volcanoes might have new volcanoes that might form in the old present place in some cases.
