Heat wave continues to bake Southern California

August 9, 2012 – LOS ANGELES — Forecasters say there’s no relief in sight and Southern California’s heat wave is expected to continue through this week, with temperatures peaking Thursday and Friday. The National Weather Service says Woodland Hills topped its 1982 record of 106 on Wednesday, when the mercury reached 107. On Monday, the San Fernando Valley hotspot tied its record temperature of 108 degrees that was set in 1997. Southern California Edison is ramping up the number of crews available to respond to possible power outages as sweltering temperatures send electricity use climbing. The company is urging conservation and saying that high electricity use, particularly from air conditioners, is straining distribution equipment, but no power outages have been reported. –San Diego Source

    I am so grateful that temperatures have been cool up until this month of August. I remember summers past when fires raged and temperatures along with them for 3 months straight. A week of highs is nothing if not delightful in comparison.

    the heat has been the same here in the NE since june. at 11am today it read 102 on the thermometer. i have never dealt with a summer this bad

    Be prepared to adapt to these weather changes. It’s not hard to see these extremes already. White roofs help with the heat….water management technology helps in cities that are experiencing more flooding. For ex: a good drainage system. Desalinization technology can produce more water in a drought, also water efficient taps, showers, toilets and irrigation systems make more water available for people, animals, and plants to drink. Solar panels to help with electricity. We can create ponds, canals, and wells to store water. It will take a lot of work but being prepared is better than not. I have visited many countries and saw the work that our ancient ancestors did to store water. Roman engineers chipped an aqueduct through more than 100 kilometers of stone to connect water to cities in the ancient province of Syria.

      A solar still is quite amazing. Can make in any environment with a large peace of clear plastic or old glass. Salt water will distill in this as well. Condensation will climb then fall to edges where you collect the pure gold in a difficult situation.

    I live in Phoenix, AZ, it was up to 114- 16 in some areas. 107 isnt too bad.

    If we continue having this drought, there will not be enough water to grow the crops and provide irrigation to the crops here in San Joaquin Valley. Tomorrow and the next day, 111 degrees is forcast. I just went out and bought yet another umbrella, trying to keep the sun from frying my plants in the yard; they are unable to take up adequate water to replace that depleted from their leaves from the intense sunlight. It’s scary. Find shade is the new motto.

    Our son and his family recently returned after a time in New Zealand and then India as missionaries to the New Age/backpacker culture there. They now live in Humboldt County, CA, ministering to the same types of lost young people. Prayers appreciated for them!

    It is very hot here in central California, 110 today & next 4 days…has been over 100 all of August thus far & forecasted over 100 all of next week too.

    Last night around 10:30 here in Oklahoma it was 79 and I had chills when the wind blew. Sad when 79 feels cold.

    Central ok here, too. Our ac went out last night and i have been very grateful it was only 95 today. That’s nearly 15 degrees cooler than recent temps. Oh, heat n air guy just left. Thankful for his rapid response too!
