6.5 magnitude earthquake strikes Solomon Islands

July 25, 2012SOLOMON ISLANDS A 6.5 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of the Solomon Islands. The earthquake erupted along the sea-floor at a depth of 22.9 km (14.2 miles). The epicenter of the earthquake was 37 km (23 miles) SW (220°) from Honiara, Solomon Islands and 1374 km (854 miles) E (92°) from Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea. This is a very dangerous region for seismic activity. The Solomon Islands sit at the edge of the Pacific Plate along its boundary with the Australia Plate to the southwest. The Australia plate is sliding under the Pacific Plate at about 9.5 centimeters (3.7 inches) per year. As the two plates converge, they become stuck together in places. Eventually, the pressure exceeds the strength of the rocks, and brittle parts of the crust break—creating an earthquake. –The Extinction Protocol

I’ve been watching earthquakes from my phone apps, I know that every day, there have been at least one 5.0 magnitude activity if not more. Then yesterday and today it is 6.0 magnitude, that I have a feeling that it will be the new norm after 5.0 range. It’s been interesting. Also, saw on Good Morning America that Greenland’s ice land mass have entirely melted.

    Alvin,

Didn’t think you slept much… we’re getting closer to the end of this year, very intense things happening for sure. It’s interesting to watch the “shift” of earthquakes, etc. Makes me wonder how much hotter it’s getting below us and I sure hope the pressure is trying to “even” out somehow… keeping fingers crossed…

All the best and hope you can catch more than 40 winks 🙂
