Violent derecho storms ravage Eastern U.S. leaving 13 dead and 3 million without power

June 30, 2012VIRGINIAViolent evening storms following a day of triple-digit temperatures wiped out power to more than 2 million customers across the eastern United States and caused at least 13 fatalities – including a 90-year-old Virginia woman asleep in bed when a tree slammed into her home, and two young cousins on a camping trip in southern New Jersey. No significant damage was reported in Hampton Roads, according to police dispatchers in the five cities. Widespread power outages were reported from Indiana to New Jersey, with the bulk of the service interruptions concentrated on Washington, D.C., and the surrounding areas. Earlier Friday, the nation’s capital reached 104 degrees — topping a record of 101 set in 1934. More than 20 elderly residents at an apartment home in Indianapolis were displaced when the facility lost power due to a downed tree. Most were bused to a Red Cross facility to spend the night, and others who depend on oxygen assistance were given other accommodations, the fire department said. The storms, sometimes packing 70 mph winds, toppled three tractor trailers on Interstate 75 near Findlay, Ohio. Fallen trees were blamed on both deaths in Springfield, Va. Besides the 90-year-old woman, who authorities didn’t identify pending notification of kin, a man driving his car was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities identified him as Khiet Nguyen, 27, of Burke, Va. In addition, a park police officer was injured by an uprooted tree in the northern Virginia county, and an 18-year-old man was struck by a power line, Jennings said. He was in stable condition after receiving CPR, she said. “Our officers and firefighters are out there with power saws, trying to clear the streets,” Jennings said. West Virginia Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin declared a state of emergency after more than 500,000 customers in 27 counties were left without electricity. At least four utility poles fell on a road in Columbus, Ohio, making it too dangerous for people in four cars to get out, police said. One person was taken to a hospital. As of 1 a.m. Saturday, Pepco was reporting 406,000 outages in the District of Columbia and Montgomery and Prince George’s counties, Md. –POL
Derecho: Above, a derecho storm over Virginia June 29, 2012. A derecho (Spanish for straight) is a widespread and long-lived, violent convectively induced straight-line windstorm that is associated with a fast-moving band of severe thunderstorms in the form of a squall line usually taking the form of a bow echo. Derechos blow in the direction of movement of their associated storms, similar to a gust front, except that the wind is sustained and generally increases in strength behind the “gust” front. A warm weather phenomenon, derechos occur mostly in summer, especially June and July in the Northern Hemisphere. –Wikipedia

That storm was about 450 miles long and 50 miles wide when it slammed into us at 80 mph here in central West Virginia. No mains power, no phones.. trees down everywhere.. spotty cellphone coverage. There is a threat of losing our water supply during the predicted 2 week outage. However, we do have a 10 KW solar array and a large battery back-up system here so we are quite happily running critical circuits (2 freezers, 2 fridge-freezers, power points, lights for kitchen, bathroom and family/workroom). I had 4 friends over here for dinner last night (including one who had just queued for several hours for a tank of gas), and the talk was of the end times and apocalyptic events. I have most definitely sold another copy of The Extinction Protocol after last night’s discussionsl!. My brother in the UK also bought his copy last week… and is overawed with your work Alvin.. thank you!

Everyone needs to get prepared in the best way they can. These storms, fires and anomalies are going to get worse and more frequent. As Alvin has said many times the climate is coming apart so to speak. This is only the beginning and soon the frequency of these events will disrupt all ways of life on a daily basis

We got hit with this here in Ohio. It was very creepy, for lack of a better word. It seemed to come out of nowhere, and it was so strong, pulling a huge cloud of dust with it. I’ve never seen anything like it here. We lost power for 14 hours, and that was a HUGE wake-up call. We are prepared to some extent, but not even close to the point we need to be. The major thing for us in this house, is that we have no plan. No protocol (heh, I kinda like that word) for how to deal with a situation that is out of the ordinary. All the supplies in the world are useless if there is no cohesive unit with the family. So anybody else out there without this vital step in survival, it is essential!

All that being said, we were very lucky. There are so many people still without power and dealing with damage. Prayers go out to them.

    God Bless,
    Ronni

“These extreme weather events will become more numerous and deadly as global temperatures continue to rise and atmospheric conditions across the planet grow increasingly more unstable. This is the new face and force of natural destruction. It is deadly. It can strike in an instant. It is horrifc and it will soon become the norm. In the space of half an hour; these unbridled forces of nature can obliterate ecosystems, alter landscapes, and completely wipe man off the face of the Earth.” – The Extinction Protocol, page 145 2010

I’m glad to hear you’re okay Ronni. It blew through here also. It hit right after I got off of work so my husband and I were out in it. It was raining sideways and traffic lights were out. The sky looked eerie with that ugly green tint. When we got home, we found that it had just rained enough to get the road wet and not much wind. I have heard about a legend that the Native Americans who lived in this area blessed it so the devil wind never hits. Amazingly, really bad storms hit all around us but usually leave us pretty much unscathed. (Unless it’s a winter storm, then we get hammered.) But a lot of Ohio got hit pretty hard. There were also sightings of funnel clouds and one tornado touchdown.

Thank you, Irene. I have been wondering about you with all of this going on. There are some places only 15 minutes away from me that are still without power. Elijah (he is almost 4) has bronchitis and has been running 101-102 degree fever, and I spent most of the night wondering what I would do with him in 100 degree temperatures and no air conditioning. Probably could have fried an egg on his head. But seriously, we take so much for granted. Glad that you are ok.

I dont know how i ended up on this webpage but i feel it necessary for myself to comment on the subject at hand….
interesting to see how many times people living in disaster prone areas are involved with hurricanes or earthquakes and have never stocked emergency food, lighting, generators, fuel, cut wood, first aid supplies, animal food etc. In my house we have a minimum 3 month food supply in the pantry, 6 months canned foods, soups, and condiments in the garage, 1000 gallons of water out behind the garage, along with at least 18-24 months now in cases of canned foods, 3 generators and fuel for several months ,6 twenty gallon propane tanks for bbqs, 24 cases bottled water gatorade and pop, cases of cheap wine (for barter purposes), cases of freeze dryed foods and vegetables, oats, pasta, rice, beans. flour, syrup, honey, salt, sugar, potatoe flakes, pancake mix etc we packed in mylar bags with oxygen absorbers and stored in plastic buckets. (good for up to 30 years) it has been a ton of money getting to this point but i still add to everything as i can afford it. when our power goes out i make sure my neighbors have what they need to make it through. if they need food fuel a generator, the car dug out so they can go to work, we make it happen for them. Eventually it isnt about just taking care of yourself and your family, it extends to being of assistance to others in need also (when my immediate family needs are met–and being less reliant on government help during emergencies.able bodied people sitting on their thumbs not doing anything for themselves are what the government wants. they will turn you into sheeple and you will do as they say in order for you to live..i chose the other road and can take care of myself without any assistance on their part, and it feels good to have the necessary skills food and equipment to do so. thanks for letting me rant.

HI Susan–I’ve been wanting to say just what you did, but wasn’t sure how until now–it’s because of my husband’s inability to realize how dangerous the times are, that God led me to realize that He meant what He said–to trust in Him with all of our hearts–the Lord Jesus told us not to store up goods where thieves and moths can steal it or destroy it–so, when I realized there was not much I could do short of leaving my husband, to try and go where it might be safer, where people also stored up goods, I just couldn’t do it–so, I turned to our heavenly Father and asked for His help, for the Lord Jesus’s help, in getting us both through this according to His will–I felt there was nothing else I could do, and it was our heavenly Father who helped me see that, to trust in Him, is what He wishes for all us to do–so, I feel much better about things now, knowing that, no matter what happens, I can rely on God Almighty, and our Lord, to see us through it, comewhatmay.

    Al,
Although it is wonderful you have all those provisions – however, if a tornado came through or a fire as is happening in Colorado Springs, CO – all your provisions would be gone in a flash. So I believe the Lord is shaking up this nation to turn our eyes and hearts to Him. He alone can watch over us and lead us to the provisions we need when there are none. He fed His people mana from heaven and quail. He turned water into wine. He divided the fish and loaves to feed hundreds. He will do the same for us. We need to put our trust in Him and not our goods. It is fine to stock up a little…but look to the hills from where your help truly cometh – it is from God who made heaven and earth.
These are the last days and the Lord told us there would be a great shaking. We see it happening before our very eyes. The thing that matters most is that we have made a true heart commitment to belong to Him. He will guide us by His Spirit in these times of distress.

Electricity company says that power could be restored from 2 days to 2 weeks depending on location. The temperature here changed from 77 degrees to over 100 in two days which I believe to be the source of the violent system. I also saw the “fire in the sky” which my friend that watched with me, an Alaska resident for years, told me closely resbled the northern lights! Any explanation for the lights? I didn’t personally see any lightning strike the ground or hear thunder. We were stuck on our circle street trapped by downed trees on power lines at both ends. After we were able to get out and see the damage caused another friend best described it as “apocalyptic”! I no longer feel safe from the effects of climate change. What’s happening is happening to all of us. I just wonder what’s coming next.

Hello, you might want to consider after recovery to go on the internet and search for
10-inch battery powered fans or go to a very large discount store and go to the place in the store where people like to buy camp out stuff…………

No significant damage in Hampton Roads. Hmmm…My 77 year old mother and I were in our home when 70 mph winds put a pine tree through it. We are now homeless. So are the residents of a 12 unit apartment building taken out by 1 large pine whipped through at high winds. I am a chronic pain sufferer with no family and in for a BIG fight w/insurance person. Yes, we are OK in body, but our spirits are tired.
