6.1 magnitude earthquake strikes off the coast of the Philippines

June 16, 2012 – MANILA – A 6.1-magnitude earthquake jolted the sea area off the Philippine island of Luzon early Sunday, US seismologists said. The US Geological Survey said the quake had a depth of 35 kilometres (22 miles) and hit at 6:19 am (2219 GMT Saturday) some 143 kilometres southwest of the city of Baguio and 181 kilometres northwest of the capital Manila. The Philippines sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire — a belt around the Pacific Ocean dotted by active volcanoes and unstable ocean trenches. In February, a 6.7-magnitude earthquake in the central Philippines triggered landslides that left over a hundred people dead or missing. One fault line runs directly under Manila, a metropolis of more than 12 million people, and government seismologists have warned the city is unprepared for a major quake. –AFP

        … Pardon my English, i am not a native English speaker. I did not say that in a sarcastic way. I really mean we can rely on this site for the news because even the local networks here in the Philippines itself have no coverage of the quake yet.

        That’s because by 6:19am, the local newspapers are already printed and are being delivered. I witnessed the 6.9 (not 6.7) in February. I was in Robinsons place Dumaguete when it struck. One of my friends mother, brother and his brothers family was buried under one of the landslides.

        We are praying here in the Philippines, as one woman had a prophetic dream of an earthquake striking San Carlos Negros before the end of the month. After she woke from the dream, she checked Phivolcs map of Negros, and found a ‘triangle’ of tectonic activity, which shocked her, because she saw that in the dream, but was not aware of it.

    “government seismologists have warned the city is unprepared for a major quake.” Hmmm. You live in the ring of fire. There’s a history of seismic activity. There’s a fault line running under your city. And you’re not prepared for a major earthquake? Is it just me? Am I missing something here?

      Maybe they’ve learned a lesson from those in Japan who prepared so, so (at least they thought they did) well only to find that you can’t prepare for the raft of Mother Nature. I have worked to help disaster management teams prepare first responder’s for whatever happens but as we see big disasters unfold, (Katrina would be one example) they appear to be too big for what man can handle even with all the technological help available.

      I have learned that you can only do the smart things to help yourself/family in the immediate offing. I drove to New Orleans six months after Katrina just to take a look at the aftermath and it was mind boggling to realize how insignificant we are when it comes to the raft of Mother Nature. As I looked at the extent of the damage in one of the hardest hit areas (the 9th Ward) while standing there in the eerie quiet listening to the wind blow through the destroyed properties in a residential area, it was so moving, I cried.

    @ maranatha, it costs money to prepare. I don’t have money.
    It takes money to earthquake-proof a house. It takes money to move to a less quake-prone area. If I have money to spend I would have moved away from here a long time ago.

    So I just live on a prayer

      Seeing your response makes me ashamed of the response I left for Irene. It was unkind and thoughtless. Many of us do not have control over where we live or being able to move to a different area. Or we have relatives and loved ones that we can’t or won’t leave behind. Please forgive me for my ignorant comment. I pray that God watches over you and keeps you safe.

        @ Ronni, Irene C, no worries. Please don’t think about it. I was not offended nor do i think you did anything wrong. They were your opinions and everybody should respect that

        I actually agree with both of you, people should leave these dangerous areas. But most cannot afford to due to financial constraints and other conditions that limit their choices.

      I apologize. I didn’t mean to be demeaning to those who can not afford to leave.I was referring to those who keep their heads in the sand and ignore the possibilities (probabilities) of such a disaster happening. I am also unable to fully stock up or arrange to have a safe place to go in case disaster or social unrest happens, due to health and financial situations. Being spiritually prepared is just as important as being physically prepared. My prayers for you and your family.

    I pray that there will be no more fatalities and speaking of being prepared for a disaster, we used to have fallout shelters here, but I don’t see any of the yellow signs anymore and the ones I see on some of the old schools buildings aren’t operable because the schools have closed years ago. I don’t think this city is prepared for anything disastrous and we are on a fault line too. The only preparedness I know of is to ask Jesus to come into your lives and keep his commandments. At least then you will be a part of God’s kingdom when he returns
