66-foot concrete dock washes ashore in Oregon, may be from 2011 Japan tsunami

June 7, 2012OREGON A massive, 66-foot concrete dock mysteriously washed up on the Oregon shore this week. And officials are trying to figure out if the floating structure had traveled all the way from Japan after the March 2011 tsunami. Local affiliate KATU reports that the dock has a placard with Japanese writing that they are attempting to translate. In addition, the station traced a phone number on the placard to a business located in Tokyo. The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department sent a picture of the placard to the Japanese consulate in Portland for review. “We don’t know where it’s from,” said Chris Havel with the parks department. “We don’t know if it’s from Japan or not but we have to eliminate those possibilities as we go forward.” Even if the dock did travel thousands of miles to reach the shores of Oregon, it did not defy physics to get arrive there. While the structure is nearly 70 feet long, 7 feet tall and 19 feet wide and made of concrete and metal, it was also reportedly designed to float. The dock was first spotted floating offshore but has now made its way to land. Kirk Tite was walking along the beach on Tuesday with his two sons and described the dock as a “massive hunk of concrete and metal covered in sea creatures.” They also found a Japanese symbol and imprint on tires attached to the dock, although those could simply indicate that the tires themselves were made in Japan. –Yahoo News

You would think there was an easy way to find out where it had come from… check it with a Geiger counter lol

For good local information Google “Oregonlive.com” The dock landed in Newport, OR. (Agate Beach) Aprox 135mi from Portland, OR. I went there alot as a kid, had relatives in the area. Will take Grandson in a couple of weeks to check it out. The researchers stated the docks covered with sea life from Japan to their surprise! Great, what next, :Attack of the Radiated Zombie Dock Life That Refused to Die!!!!!!(comming to a beach theater near you!!!)

I am absolutely amazed that these states, towns dont have a plan in place for dealing with the debris immediately to safe guard people, “children” from anything harmful or from people taking a piece of it home with them. They should be monitoring the waters better ..seriously!!

      • and human curiosity knows no bounds. I think 2 were killed in the U.S. by standing too close to the shore, gawking at the waves from the original Japanese earthquake.

If this was washed out to sea in the initial tsunami wave, it is likely it would not be contaminated. It should have been salvaged while still out at sea. Now that it has landed it becomes a problem that no one will want to claim. No doubt, there will be many salvage battles on the horizon (pun sort of intended). And when the stuff starts to come on shore in massive debris fields, there will be battles over the clean up.

Well I for one would not be getting too close to this! If you think radiation in fish is a problem, this is one big scary glowing concrete fish!

In my honest opinion, I don’t think it would be carrying a significant amount of radiation. I mean its a concrete dock afterall, and likely doesn’t have anything to do with the reactors. The reactors started letting off radiation a while after the tsunami when the fuel rods were being exposed due to lack of new water.

I just find that everyone seems to be so worried about radiation in the weirdest places. I mean sure, if you live near the reactor, be worried, but its not as big of an issue as people make it out to be.

What we need to be concerned about is this beast system of government thats coming into play in these last days…

Our hope is in the resurrection & the glorious return of our Lord and Christ.

I’d prefer to concern myself with the possibility of radiation, at least radiation can be tested for, measured, and proven to exist or not exist, unlike some other notions…..

Yes, notions exist, however the probability that those notions are factually true is very much dependent upon the verifiability/falsifiability of actual evidence, mere assertion of a notion has NO bearing on a notions’ factuality in any way.

There was no radiation because the debris was washed away before the meltdown. What they ARE concerned about now are all the little critters attached to the dock that came with it. Crabs, starfish, “millions of organisms”, most, if not all, of them native only to Japan. So question now is what diseases they may be carrying, and what species may be invasive. They supposedly scraped a good bit of them off……..but how ’bout the ones that fell off, swam off, or let go on the way here?

Of course, this is all still better than if it were loaded w/radiation. Then the thought that follows that one is that I’m sure eventually something will show up that IS loaded with radiation. Can anyone say “FUBAR”?

I read about this on Friday morning. Apparently, it broke loose before the Fukushima disaster happened and they found no radiation. I’ll be pleased to read one of the update links posted here, but it’s freezing and way past my bedtime. I’ll read it later! Thanks for the news, Alvin.
