War, famine, strife, extinction: scientists warn planet approaching a ‘tipping point’ of an apocalyptic nature

June 6, 2012EARTHEarth is rapidly headed toward a catastrophic breakdown if humans don’t get their act together, according to an international group of scientists. Writing Wednesday (June 6) in the journal Nature, the researchers warn that the world is headed toward a tipping point marked by extinctions and unpredictable changes on a scale not seen since the glaciers retreated 12,000 years ago. “There is a very high possibility that by the end of the century, the Earth is going to be a very different place,” study researcher Anthony Barnosky told LiveScience. Barnosky, a professor of integrative biology from the University of California, Berkeley, joined a group of 17 other scientists to warn that this new planet might not be a pleasant place to live. “You can envision these state changes as a fast period of adjustment where we get pushed through the eye of the needle,” Barnosky said. “As we’re going through the eye of the needle, that’s when we see political strife, economic strife, war and famine.” Barnosky and his colleagues reviewed research on climate change, ecology and Earth’s tipping points that break the camel’s back, so to speak. At certain thresholds, putting more pressure on the environment leads to a point of no return, Barnosky said. Suddenly, the planet responds in unpredictable ways, triggering major global transitions. The most recent example of one of these transitions is the end of the last glacial period. Within not much more than 3,000 years, the Earth went from being 30 percent covered in ice to its present, nearly ice-free condition. Most extinctions and ecological changes (goodbye, woolly mammoths) occurred in just 1,600 years. Earth’s biodiversity still has not recovered to what it was. Today, Barnosky said, humans are causing changes even faster than the natural ones that pushed back the glaciers — and the changes are bigger. Driven by a 35 percent increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide since the start of the Industrial Revolution, global temperatures are rising faster than they did back then, Barnosky said. Likewise, humans have completely transformed 43 percent of Earth’s land surface for cities and agriculture, compared with the 30 percent land surface transition that occurred at the end of the last glacial period. Meanwhile, the human population has exploded, putting ever more pressure on existing resources. –MSNBC

    • We’re moving into the next stage of a planetary crisis and the spectral diffusion of seismic activity acoss the globe is another indicator of that. Christ didn’t warn of earthquakes as a sign in the last days, as the world has always had earthquakes but instead he said ‘earthquakes in different places.’ Matthew 24:7 We also had another 5.1 earthquake in Siberia, where the magnetic pole is migrating.

I do have a question regarding all the seismic activity up in Alaska is this normal for that area just seems alot going on in the region?

        Like

      • A lot of it is related to magnetic north pole deviation. Alaskan geology is extremely dangerous. The region has produced the second highest magnitude earthquakes ever recorded on the planet and the largest tsunami ever witnessed- 524 meters or (1742 ft) high.

This is not a place to be when these changes worsen.

You said something about Alaskan geology being extremely dangerous. I have family up there. You said,”This is not a place to be when these changes worsen.” When do you suspect that will be and what part of Alaska would be considered unsafe right now?.

        Like

      • This is future- not present. You’ll know because there will be a dramatic escalation of geologic activity. Nothing will happen in an instant. When it does worsen in the region, that is the time to heed the warning signs and leave. I can’t pin-point times when the planet will convulse in specific regions. I only know the geology of the region ranks this as propably one of the most hazardous regions on Earth. The point is if people don’t see a problem brewing with the planet as a whole now, the more complacent they are likely to become in the future and are less likely to comprehend the magnitude of the impending dangers. That’s why it’s vital they awaken now.

Huh…one could logically argue we are beyond the tipping point. Millions of dead fish, birds, & so on the past 12 months…natural disasters are continually rising, & we humans have played a major part in this. Our oceans, land, lakes, & so on are disgusting…just a waste dump to many people. Humans have become far too arrogant, ignorant, greedy, selfish, etc…just look at the HUGE economic rift between people like I & the rich & that rift keeps growing. While the rich get richer, we get poorer…despite that I do not use credit cards, have not been to the movies in over 2 years, eat frozen dinners, & so on…5 years ago things were better but the company I worked for went out of business. I work 2 jobs now but the price of everything has gone ridiculously up…anyways despite the warnings, the protests…it falls upon deaf ears. It is human nature not to change until brought to their knees. This apocalyptic change this article mentions is inevitable..if one survives or not…is trivial, all that matters is you live to be good now..so you can be accepted by God. Live by Gods word, treat everybody with kindness, respect & live regardless of who they are..always take the high road & so on

Our logic cannot understand 100% of Gods logic. To be human is to suffer at times, to be tested, etc..I agree with you it is our own doing in the situation we as civilization find ourselfs in, we are given free will…& to earn a spot in heaven, we must follow God, do good, be good, respect & love others regardless of how they treat us, etc….

      ???????, I will say this.

Whether Mankind waits for G-d to save the Earth or not – Is no excuse, for the DESTRUCTION, and INACTION to resolve the on-going abuse, of our home.
If we want to help preserve the healthy ecology and biology of our planet, then Mankind, NEEDS TO DO HIS PART, to “keep the house in order”.
This will go for all of us, whether we claim to be Christians, or Muslims, or Buddhists, etc.

If my house needs a new roof, I am not going to wait for G-d to do it for me.
He may help provide the means, but He won’t fix the roof.

This ^ is a simple fact, and I am afraid, that it is lost upon many who call themselves Christians. 😦

Faith is a wonderful thing, the belief I have in my God is precious to me & in return She gives me the courage to get through each & every day. I don’t just speak to Her in my head either, I pray aloud too & on occasion I even sing & dance at the same time lol.

Well said Pagan66 ! (i notice you always put in a word for UNITY in Diversity, respect and tolerance for the Global Community) Even believing we can survive without remembering the force that creates and gives us life shows we are OUT OF BALANCE WITH NATURE. Survival depends on BALANCE and reverence for the Creator. Who lights a lamp for the God force? Who stops to thank the God force for every day and all the sweet little blessings that come our way? But then, this is the age of darkness and this is how it is meant to be, and we are all at different evolutionary levels with different capacity to understand the eternal Truth … Only God is eternal – everything else comes and goes! I started following Earth Changes reports/newsletter in the 1980’s … there is a belief that most of humanity will wake up at the last hour. Once i asked a Yogi, why is there so much suffering in India? He replied, “it gives people a chance to remember the Lord”

    • The mayans never said the earth would be destroyed they said it would be the birth of a new age and like any birth it would be accompanied by pain and bloodshed… there is a significant difference between the two. I know a lot of christians want to disregaard it completely using reasoning such as no one will know the day or the hour… but thats fallible because that verse refers to the day and hour of the coming of christ. shortly after that verse the bible makes it clear that we will know the season. winter solstice could just be the beginning of the season my brothers. . and there are some very good astronomical observations you should consider before throwing anything not written in Christian doctrine out the window. I am a Christian in the sense that i serve the christ. however there is a lot more to human history and perspective than the new testament and i utilize all the tools god has given me. Especially the use of my individualized thought processes. god bless.

    All My Relatives

Today I went to a fabric store, as indulging in fiber arts and caring for human children, and plants, and on days when I have energy and strength, caring for animals, too, are the activities that nourish and give strength to my spirit. Every time that I go to any of four or five specific locations, I have the opportunity to talk with others (women, usually, and rarely younger than 60 or so, unless it is a youngster needing some guidance). Today I was feeling such sorrow thinking of how the little ones are suffering (Ukraine, Belorussia, Somalia, Syria and on and on ) and how they will suffer more., no matter what I do.

What I noticed is that these other Grandmothers are doing what I do. We stitch love and comfort and strength and worthiness into gifts such as baby quilts and bigger quilts for bigger kids. Weaving and knitting and crochet and spinning all require a nurturing state of mind and spirit, in order for the gift to be infused with the love that we Grandmothers intend, and wish, and pray for, for all the children to know even in that pre-verbal center of self awareness. We mostly make quilts as they surround a child in the warm concern and attention of a child’s ancestors. This bit of security can even infuse the sleeping one’s dreams. A quilt that is stitched with good intent, will be good. It can help to make a child safe and comfortable, wherever the little one is.

This time there were only three of us. Me, a Great Grandma of 71 and one Elder Great Grandmother of 88. I spoke aloud that in my sadness I feared that this poor Earth would not be habitable long enough for the babies we each were sewing for, to grow up. These two lovely good hearted women looked at me and one spoke and said “No it won’t. But Scripture tells us we must live it through.” And that is the message I heard today.

Does Scripture indeed say that? Where? Is that a command? Or is it merely a suggestion of how to avoid insanity when facing the inevitable? Or both. I don’t remember reading those words. i do remember deciding 53 years ago, when I was ten, to do just exactly that. Only now, after hearing someone say this to me, out loud, I’m not sure I understand, after all. Does “live it through” mean the same thing to everyone?

    Thank you

Mat 24:10-14 (NIV) “At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people. Because of the increase in wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, but he who endures to the end will be saved. And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.” I believe this means to love goodness and keep love of fellow man no matter how hard that may be, when things in our world get rough, and loving one another is the hardest thing to do. For those of us who can still love our fellow man and keep our faith, will make it to God’s kingdom of heaven. Obviously this will be an arduous task for some!

Granny Bear – Those are excellent rhetorical questions.
I had to ponder and ‘digest’ this.

I do not know, if “live it through” means the same thing to everyone, or not.
      But I will say this.
According to what I have read about the Hopi religious ‘prophecies’ or traditions – if I am understanding them correctly – They seem somewhat ambiguous, in that they provide “two different paths” with different outcomes, depending upon the path chosen.

This seems to be in contrast (??) with most major Western religious prophesies, which seems to ‘predefine’ and predict certain events.

Superficially, one might be led to think that, the Hopi ‘prophesies’ and Western Religious traditions / prophesies, are ‘diametrically opposed’ to one another. HOWEVER, this is not necessarily the case !!
** I think the key lesson, is that the Hopi Traditions/Prophesies were more concerned with Mankind’s RESPONSE to future / tragic events – The way people RESPOND in the occurrence of these ‘events’, whatever they might be, is WHAT will help DETERMINE the ‘path’ or the ‘outcome’. **

This brings up a second, and perhaps more important, point – regarding the Hopi prophesies and ‘two different paths’.
This is not just about ‘two different paths’, but two ‘different groups of people’ :
Some, will seek to redress the damage done to the planet & its people, in the aftermath of events.
Others, will seek to ‘restore the system’ to its former glory after such ‘events’- Kind of like ‘restoring Rome to its former glory’, if you will.

As more & more disasters & tragic events strike, how should we expect these leaders (or ANYONE with a ‘vested interest’ in the system) to respond to those who would attempt to redress the wrongs ?
Ref. to Rev.12:12. “But woe to the earth and the sea, because the devil has gone down to you! He is filled with fury, because he knows that his time is short.”

** We can see the early stages of such division today.
For an example, take a look at the desperate attempt of the Bankers and European / world leaders, to keep the Eurozone intact, in its current guise….. Wrapping on layer after layer after layer of Duct Tape, figuratively speaking.

So then, according to what most Western religious prophesies are saying, the ‘DUCT TAPE REPAIR’ of current world systems – Political, financial, etc. – Are All in Vain, and will all Fail in the end, anyway.

In the meantime, we should do what we can, whether large or small, to help redress the wrongs – So that we leave a planet for future generations to enjoy. It may make the difference.

I dont believe in the glowbal warming greenie tipping point nonsense. The fact is everything in on or around the planet is a natural thing. Its likely that half of those things like a snakes poison or gas from a volcanic vent, can be harmful to organic life . However they are natural just the same. And since you cant take something and make it into nothing or take nothing and make it into something . How is man creating anything new? and add to this the fact that for every action there is a equal & opposite reaction. Its a wash. Even Steven. Mans activities are really only temporarly rearranging that what is ,has and always will be present in one form or another. The planet will eventually recycle everything somehow, someway, sometime. The activities of man have no real or lasting effect on the planet. The poles are gonna shift no matter what man does or doesnt do. The poles would be shifting and the planet doing what its doing even if man has never walked upon the planet. There isnt any need to panic or be afraid or to take drastic measures. As long as each person doesnt do things that would endanger their soul everything will be OK. Actually its a exciting time to be alive on the planet. Think about it the end of an age! Embrace and try to enjoy the adventure. If your a good person your soul will survive even if your body doesnt. You are not your body your just merely using it for a short time.
