Indian village plagued by swarm of mysterious venomous spiders

June 4, 2012 INDIA A town in India is living in fear of a swarm of venomous spiders, which last month left two people dead after being bitten. It may sound like a B-grade horror movie, but residents of the town of Sadiya, in Assam state, say that on the evening of May 8 as they were celebrating a Hindu festival swarms of spiders suddenly appeared and attacked them, The Times of India reported. Over the next few days two people – a man, Purnakanta Buragohain, and an unnamed school boy – died after being bitten by the spiders. Scores more turned up at the town’s hospital with spider bites. District authorities are panicking and are considering spraying the town with the insecticide DDT. Locals say the most terrifying aspect is that spiders appear in swarms and their behaviour is highly aggressive. “It leaps at anything that comes close. Some of the victims claimed the spider latched on to them after biting. If that is so, it needs to be dealt with carefully. The chelicerae and fangs of this critter are quite powerful,” head of the department of life sciences at Dibrugarh University Dr LR.Saikia said. Teams of Indian arachnid experts have flocked to the town, hoping to identify the species, but so far they have drawn a blank. They say it could be a tarantula, a black wishbone or even a funnel-web spider – or it could be a whole new species. One thing they agree on is that it is not native to the area as there is no record of venomous spiders in Assam. The black wishbone and funnel-web are native to Australia. Researchers are also still running tests to find out the toxicity of the spiders’ venom. Dr Anil Phatowali, superintendent of the town’s hospital, said they had not administered antivenin as they could not be certain the spider was venomous at all. He also pointed out other factors may have contributed to the two reported fatalities. “All the bite patients first went to witch doctors, who cut open their wounds with razors, drained out blood and burnt it. That could have also made them sick,” Dr. Phatowali said. –News.au

This definitely makes my arachnophobia flare up. I would seriously question my involvement in future festivals if attacked by a swarm of aggressive spiders.

I cringed just by the reading the title & looking at the god awful picture of that evil looking spider….I do NOT like spiders, in any way, shape, or form, no thank you! If an alien race came to earth & resembled spiders, them they must die.

Perhaps these spiders are behaving in bizarre behavior in reaction of what is going to happen in environment or what had happened prior to swarm? Just pondering…

Curious to see what they find out about these spiders !

My guess is that they are an ‘invasive’ species, brought from elsewhere – But where ?

Interesting that no one can identify the species of spider. Perhaps it is a lab experiment turned loose????? Never know anymore.

I have never heard of spiders doing this…did these spiders get together for a town hall meeting & voted to attack the town? “we are going to take back what is ours! That town was ours before the two legs came, we attack tomorrow!” seriously!?! I had to look this up to confirm this, haha…I am baffled myself…I would be absolutely terrified if I saw hundreds of spiders making their way towards me & attacking people…EVIL

That’s strange. I know of no spiders that have social structures (like ants or bees)…they all are loners. There will be more and more animals having aggressive behavior toward people– it is due to the widening divide between the humans and animals– the humans destroy their environment and homes, abuse them and push them to extinction, and the animals respond in kind. Everything is connected, if the balance is upset, there are consequences.
Reminds me of the verse in Revelations 6:8 “I looked, and there before me was a pale horse! Its rider was named Death, and Hades was following close behind him. They were given power over a fourth of the earth to kill by sword, famine and plague, and by the WILD BEASTS of the earth.”
So, be wary of the squirrels when you go to the park. 🙂

Really smart of you i like the way you put your statement….. the truth is as you have said the fulfillment of the word of the Lord in Rev 6:8….. The pale horse man of the apocalypse is here with us and its only a matter of time before we see more of this happenings across the world and the subsequent return of the Messiah in the Rapture of the Church.; coz if you read your Bible well you will understand by the time the 5th seal is broken we are already in the tribulation because that is the only time those Christians who did not make it to the Rapture would be beheaded(Rev 6:9-10)… in other words the Rapture happens in between the breaking of the 4th seal(The release the pale horseman) and the breaking of the 5th seal……
Its a call to holy preparedness in Christ Jesus; The MESSIAH our King is Coming(Mark 1:15)

Make a note, add the ‘RAID’ in your survival kit, do they make a purse sized one? better have 2 handy, never know, because if that doesn’t kill them, use a lighter and go the blowtorch method. Actually, the well equipped kitchen stores have mini blowtorches for the creme brulee. 🙂
Aside from this, there is no question about their origins. I think the earth is filled with all sorts of venomous creepy crawly things that we have yet to discover, and I also think that all these earthquakes, land and ocean, are causing all these unknown species to come forward since their natural habitat is being shaken. But I also agree that prophecy is prophecy, has yet to be wrong. So fasten seatbelts because this ride is going to get rougher and arm yourselves with HIS word!
Blessings y’all, stay safe, and stay away from festivals :-).

see (http://www.assamtribune.com/scripts/detailsnew.asp?id=jun0212/at09) article in a different news paper which slanders this article as hype and false reporting.

Till now there are no pictures of the so called killer tarantula’s found in Assam, all the images are used in the newsprint and online are just random pictures found on the net and have been copy pasted to the article without proper references, I have extensively followed the news about this so called tarantula’s ever since it first came in the news 3 weeks back.
1.The Indian news papers reporting such things without proper research, they are today leading rumor mills, just today there was a news of a leopard being captured/killed in assam, in some papers the leopard has been captured without any injures and in some it was killed after injuring 13 what is the real story is up to the readers.
    2. This news was first reported saying that the spiders were resembling the black widow spiders.
    3. Tarantulas don’t jump and bite.
    4. The only tarantula species found in India is the Indian ornamental Tarantula (Poecilotheria regalis) found in southeastern parts of India, also found in Sri Lanka.

So please stop spreading rumours and stick to facts

There was an article and perhaps it was on here I saw it, that mentioned flooding with trees becoming entombed so to speak with thousands of spiders. The trees looked like cocoons…wonder if this is in that same area if the flooding has receded? And again this is NOT normal behavior of spiders. The things we are hearing and learning in our lifetime should give many pause to consider surrendering their lives to Christ today ~ Thanks Alvin, wonderful information for all. \o/

Hmm, interesting comments………Fortunately for me, I am reading this at 08:44am Monday morning. In reading this article, what came into my mind was this. The article reports that while this Indian village were celebrating a Hindu Festival (idol worshiping) the spiders appeared and that reminded me of the story in the desert when God sent venomous serpents among the Children of Israel to bite them for complaining about how inefficient manna was to their needs and God had Moses to but a bronze snake on a staff and lifted it up and as the people looked upon it, they were healed and it was not the statue that healed them, they realized that God was sending the snakes and not the snakes coming themselves and of their need to repent. probably some died by not looking at the bronze statue.
Did not help for the victims to go to a witch doctor (a medium)
Probably has nothing to do with the story, but it came to mind.

Here’s a bizarre theory…Perhaps it’s radiation mutation/poisoning. I’ve read articles (I wish I could cite them) where humans in Japan have become more aggressive, increas in rapes and murders in a town not for from fukushima. India is good distance from Japan, but who knows where these spiders came from. I live in the Pacific Northwest and there has been a marked increase in violent crimes in and around Seattle in the last year. Five people shot dead in one day last week. The radiation increase in the air, from the Fukushima disaster, in our region was rapid. And now there talking about the tuna off the west coast having high levels of radiation, “but still low enough to eat it.” Yeah right.

How horrible for these people affected, I pray that no more people are bitten & the ones that were & survived, well I hope they recover quickly. I don’t think this happened because they were celebrating a Hindu festival either, could have just as easily happened at a cricket match or in church. These could be funnel webs, though it’s definitely strange how an Aussie spider could be breeding in such numbers in a small town in India. Shades of arachnophobia! The aggressive behaviour of this species of spider is well known, though normally only when threatened or disturbed. During an attack, they can tightly latch onto their victim & bite repeatedly, sometimes delivering a lethal amount of venom. What is surprising though, is to read of spiders attacking in “swarms”, especially if they are funnel webs. I live rural in a country that has some of the most toxic spiders & snakes in the world & I can’t say that I have ever heard of such a thing before. And a side note – Do NOT visit a witch doctor to treat any sort of insect bite, seek immediate medical attention at your nearest hospital!!

    Peace

….definitely appears to be a “spiritual event” (demonic manipulation?)…and, fyi, all arachnids (spiders) are “venomous”; albeit, some venom is more potent than others and some spiders are more aggressive than others…this is the first I’ve heard of marauding gangs of viscious spiders (anywhere!)…if this story is true the characteristic of these spiders is most certainly due to some kind of “manipulation”.
