Moderate earthquake jolts Indonesia’s West Papua province

June 2. 2012 INDONESIA A moderate 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck Indonesia’s West Papua province on Friday, the US Geological Survey reported, sending panicked residents rushing outdoors. The quake, which struck at 15:56 pm local time (06:56 GMT) near the town of Manokwari in eastern Indonesia, had residents leaving homes and buildings, but there were no immediate reports of damage. “I was outside my house when the ground began to shake. I ran indoors to grab my three grandchildren who were napping inside and rushed back out,” said Leo Ayomi, a 60-year-old grandmother. The quake struck 92 kilometer (57 miles) west of Manokwari at a depth of 24 kilometer. –NDTV

Each time I read about an earthquake, it always state in the article people ran out of their homes into the street panicing….haha really!?! That is absolutely the worst & dumbest action to do during an earthquake…you stay in the house, get under something heavy, etc…what are these people not educated on this?

This is a 3rd world country. I’m sure they don’t have mahogany desks & elaborate dining room tables to crawl under. And I’d almost bet their village isn’t printing & distributing pamphlets on earthquake preparedness. Maybe you could take a trip over to Indonesia and see their situation first hand…

      Sorry Alvin, I couldn’t resist.

Well, let’s turn this into a ‘teachable moment.’ The absolute worst place to be during an earthquake is inside a building. That’s what killed so many people in the 2010 Haiti earthquake when 90% of the buildings collapsed in the 7.0 earthquake. Always get to open ground in the event of an earthquake. It’s a known fact that structural collapse is responsible for 75% of all fatalities in earthquakes. Even if you survive the shaking in a damaged multi-storey building, there is always the chance you can get buried under mountains of debris and it could be days or even weeks before you’re discoverd if you’re injured.

Thank you, A! In the article about 7.3 possible quake in Pakistan, they were telling people to stay inside “after” the quake because the buildings may collapse a few seconds after and drop debris on the people in the streets. WHAT!!? STAY INSIDE!!? Oh, they also said the buildings weren’t built to codes set after 1935 disaster! STAY INSIDE!!? How about RUN until tou see the sign that says “You are now entering INDIA!
