Shifting planet: Indonesia’s 8.6 left scientists scratching their heads, now Italy’s 6.0 quake does the same

May 24, 2012ITALY A strong and unusually shallow earthquake struck northern Italy over the weekend, fracturing pavement, sending torrents of brick and rubble raining down from buildings, and killing seven people. The powerful shaking was a first for the region in centuries — and fairly surprising to seismologists. Data indicate the magnitude 6.0 quake, which struck just after 4 a.m. local time on Sunday (May 20), just north of Bologna, was a thrust quake — the type of earthquake caused when two tectonic plates smash together — yet it occurred at a depth of just 3 miles (5 kilometers). “It is kind of surprising that it’s that shallow, because it’s pretty far from the plate boundary,” said Paul Caruso, a geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey. “Normally we expect things to get deeper as they move northward,” he told OurAmazingPlanet. The quake hit about 470 miles (750 km) north of the plate boundary — the place where the two colliding plates meet — which runs along the sole of Italy’s “boot.” It is here that the African plate is plowing slowly northward, crashing into the Eurasian plate. Caruso explained that the shallower a quake, the more damage it can cause. “If a quake is 500 kilometers deep, and you’re right on top of it, you’re going to feel it a lot less strongly than if it’s 5 kilometers deep,” he said. “As the seismic energy moves through the ground some of it is dissipated.” Several aftershocks have rocked the affected region, and it’s not clear if this recent earthquake is a harbinger of things to come. “We don’t know if this is going to trigger more activity in this area or not,” Caruso said. “We would expect to see aftershocks in the area for a while.” There have already been at least 100 aftershocks. The shaking could continue for weeks or months, he said. –Discovery News
Physics.org said: “The Sumatra earthquake’s magnitude surprised scientists because it was the most powerful strike-slip earthquake ever recorded. The quake was also unusual in that the rupture was in the middle of an oceanic plate rather than at the boundary between two plates.” Now, we’re seeing these uncharacteristic large magnitude earthquakes erupt far from tectonic plate boundaries like Sumatra and Italy with rather shallow signatures- this is generally not supposed to happen. Earthquakes are doing things which haven’t been generally characteristic of earthquakes in  the past. This is further indication that the planet’s seismic dynamism is shifting and change is accelerating.  –The Extinction Protocol

Hi Alvin – here’s a question. The known plate faults have been obvious facts for many years. But it seems now that maybe new major plate fractures are appearing. Would the increased amount of volcanic activity have something to do with why off-fault places are fracturing away from the main plate faults? For example, would all this very hot fire (liquid earth) be sort of lubricating unknown deep, below-the-surface canyons and causing areas of surface to be slipping?

In a few days Japan will be hit by another strong 8+ quake, we won’t believe what will happen, we will see part of Japan sinking slowly and a major nuclear meltdown. Japanese are going to be the most famous Earth Changes refugees. Insurance companies will collapse and worldwide economy will suffer… We knew it, we are the lucky one 😉

If the rupture was in the middle of an oceanic plate, then can the plate break up and eventually crumble? And how do the surrounding plates react with the relief of pressure?

Since contintental landmasses essentially insulate heat, the heat can build up in the interior of a continent along an area known as a craton, which could lead to the rifting of a continent and the formation of a new ocean similar to what’s occurring in East Africa and what consequently failed to occur in the middle of the U.S. along the North America Craton.

Alvin, thank you. This is a horror scenario. It’s a bit of a shock to realise that there is nothing we can do to avoid an event like this.I I realise it’s natural for the earth to streatch and shift. But the consequences for us does not bear thinking about. It’s something I never want to witness, ever.

      • It’s a rather dreadful scenario because the planet’s crust, afterall, is quite britle as far as thickness and dexterity goes.

The sad thing is, most scientists (not all) are not taught how to think outside the box. They are logical and methodical. Unfortunately, if a theory doesn’t fit into a formula, it is often discarded. Those scientists who do dare to think outside the box are often shunned and ostrasized. Unfortunately, when something outside of their formulas does happened, they are caught unaware and are left scratching their heads.

The Italy quake screams massive pressure is being let off when & where it can. Look at how long it’s been without a quake of any size on the Cascadia Subduction Zone………We’re on the brink of seeings events no one dreamed of, not really, because of just how widespread they’re going to be. I’m not trying to spread fear, just awareness. Love, Light & Blessings be upon You 🙂

Alvin, is there any explanation as to why the cracks are starting at the top of the egg & moving down? Taking into consideration, the recent strike-slip that struck indonesia, the cracks are working their way down…

      • Thanks Sammy. If you’re referring to the quake in the Norwegian Sea, I devote almost a whole chapter to why they are happening in the Arctic Cricle and in Siberia and what the relationship is with magnetic polar migration. The book should answer a lot of those quesitons and I’m especially delighted that long-time followers like yourself have picked up a copy because the stories we’ve post over the years have been falling across our pathway like bread-crumbs pointing to the fact that massive change is about to occur with our planet.

Thanks for being you and thanks for the loyal support,

  11. Dave said that earthquakes created most of the mountains in California. I had learned that it was volcanos. but I am not sure…is it also thrust faults such as pushed up the Himilayas? Those are so much bigger than anything man has experienced in his time on earth, is that not true? I saw the results of a 9 in Anchorage, with land dropping twenty feet, but that is nothing compared to mountains pushing up. But I suppose these big thrusts were not sudden….happened over aeons?

It feels quite surreal watching all this unfold, kind of like those old time movies made up of hundreds and hundreds of stacks of paper, flipped at lightning speed; one scene comes into play only to change to the next scene and the next. Feels like I’m dreaming sometimes, yet here I am wide awake. And even stranger, I feel like I’ve seen this movie before and am calmly looking back on it from a very far away place, kind of like a dream I had 20+ years ago, when someone took me way, way high up on top of a mountain and showed me all the devastation below. I remember knowing the places I saw below me and feeling so sad that they weren’t there anymore. Peace to all and may we prepare our hearts first and foremost.

I agree. The craziness just won’t stop. It seems like everyday there are more “unknowns” taking place than the day before. When we are constantly defying our theories of science, and things are happening that to our knowledge, do not or cannot happen, it is time to look a little further. Something is up. I wouldn’t even try to place a finger on what is happening, but it’s obvious whatever it is, is accelerating before our very eyes. I hate to be a doomer, i’m a very positive person, but things do not seem to be taking turns for the better. Maybe for the planet, but not for us

      • Hi King kevin, thank you for sharing your thoughts. I like to think, still, even with all that is going on there is great Joy and a quiet peace of knowing that it is all unfolding in God’s Time, as it will. But I would like to add that we are not doomed by any means, our physical bodies will quit anyway one day, but not our eternal souls (we are spirit), and I guess I look at it as God simply calling us back to Him, whatever day that may be. There is much to look forward to, and I try to look to the Heavens through all this temporary chaos and pain here on earth, Jesus is Lord and He wants the very Best for us! Peace be with you!

I think this is such an exciting time to watch Bible prophecy unfold right in front of our eyes. It is a great time to be alive but could be devastating before the rapture. I had no clue this web site was out there. I have been journaling the news the past 2 years and a lot has gone on in the Middle East. A lot of Mulim nations around Israel have collapsed and new leaders taken over. Our prsident had teh nerve to tell the dictators of at least 4 countries to step down from their reign. Who is he to say these things? Next prophetic event is a peace treaty with Israel. The anti-christ will confirm it! We need to share the Gospel more now than ever. Before it is too late!

    Alvin,
God Bless you for the work you are doing in keeping us informed.

I walk quite a bit and have began to notice something that I consider unusual. I wanted to test my theory further before I posted this. There does seem to be a definite pattern regardless of where I look for this observation. I am seeing ever so slight but increasing daily a raising of sidewalks and driveways. The split lines are separating in so many places for it to be a coincidence. I am not talking about spring time thaw or older homes. I am seeing this in numerous places and it is a fairly recent development. People are spraying ground kill as the separations are allowing for more and more weeds or grass to grow between each section of driveway or sidewalk.. I have lived in many houses and have never seen this before. I am just curious if anyone else has seen this or would look for what I am describing in your own neighborhoods,

      George,

I live in northern Louisiana…..and have lived in my home for 6 years. Literally every day the cracks in the roads are wider and wider. I travel the interstate everyday and have also noticed the cracks getting bigger and bigger!! I started telling my family about this and to start watching as well!! I have measured a place in my sidewalk everyday….and it’s NOW 2 inches higher than last month and my house was built in 1982. 2 blocks over a man’s driveway is totally caved in……and the scary thing is…. that there’s nothing under the places that have caved in!!! There were 3 small earthquakes in east Texas last week…. which is very close to my area and my family and I felt 1 of them. The next morning my flower bed had a small but deep sink hole and it wasn’t there before. CHANGE is happeneing…slowly!!

George – Where do you live ?

It seems that not all areas of the country, are experiencing geologic change, at the same rate.
What’s odd, is that some of these events, are happening in places that are not normally associated with seismic activity….. Such as, large cracks opening up in the ground and ‘earthquake booms’ in places like WI.

Well this is all very scary. The visionaries at Garabandal said God would chastise us with fire if we didn’t repent. They saw people jumping into water to get away from the fire but the water only made things worse. The water was like liquid fire they said. However the visionaries said God would give us several warnings and a great miracle to help us repent. I pray we all repent and turn to God

I just was told that what comes next is not in Italy, but higher in Switzerland and Germany and is related to a volcano, a big caldera in the sourrondings of Lac Léman and is connected to another very large in Germany, where they had several swarms in 2011.

This is the first time that I have heard of a caldera in the Switzerland area.

Is this caldera or its volcanic system, associated with the Lacher See ?

If we keep dodging a bullet, should we joy in the relief that we’re being missed or crouch in the dread that the bullets are still coming? You see the dangers are still ‘clear and present‘ and the geology of the planet is dynamic and ever evolving. Each day may present new dangerous scenarios like a house of cards- we just don’t see the change because we cannot view what’s transpiring under the Earth. However, for anyone caught in these potent tremors that have hit Turkey, Bulgaria, New Zealand, most of the stories people are telling you is that this is the most terrifying experience they have ever been through.
