4.0 earthquake near Calexico shows growing tension along plate boundary

May 23, 2012CALEXICO, Calif. — A small earthquake has shaken the California-Mexico border region near the Imperial County city of Calexico. The U.S. Geological Survey says the magnitude-4 temblor occurred at 8:06 a.m. Tuesday. The epicenter was a dozen miles west of Calexico and 76 miles east of Tijuana. –Sac Bee

    You’re right Alvin. The sequence that started in April has continued and the frequency of light to moderate quakes has occurred on the faults that should be watched closely: the lower San Andreas (south of Devore which was the south break point of the 1857 quake, the norh was near Parkfield), the San Jacinto which is a major fault closely connected to the San Andreas, and the Elsinore fault which is also connected though to a lesser degree to the San Andreas. They are all right lateral slip faults with the San Jacinto and Elsinore being on the Pacific plate. The 4.0 was on confluence of faults that connect to the Elsinore fault zone. If you draw a chevron arrow with the point triangulated on Devore California and pointing north toward Parkfield California it becomes obvious that stress is building up from this point back south toward the Mexican border.       Laguna-Salada Fault in S. California

      I think this is something more indicating mounting tension on the Laguna-Salada fault, which caused the 2010 7.2 Baja, California earthquake. Prior to 2010, the fault hadn’t ruptured in 100 years. Since the 2010 earthquake, the number of tremors rattling the region has been steadily increasing. The fault has clearly awakened.

      There were preshocks to the 1857 and 1906 events. The 1857 event was preceded by several hours two shocks felt throughout the area and recorded in the annals of history. The 1906 event was preceded minutes before by a shock that drove San Franciscans into the streets. All the preshocks appear to have occurred on the Pacific plate side of the San Andreas, slightly north and west of the 1857 break (in 1857) and slightly south (at San Juan Baptista) in the 1906 break. My amateur opinion is that we are seeing an event that more than likely involves the area south of Devore into the Salton Sea area and south toward the Laguna Saluda area that Alvin points out below. The preshock could occur anywhere from the LA Basin south to San Diego. God bless all.
