Major crack in the south wall of Fukushima reactor 4: is this the end of the world as we know it?

May 20, 2012TOKYOIf there isn’t a large crack there is still the issue of the severely damaged Unit Number Four building ‘tilting.’ The 1500 spent fuel rods pond almost suspended in air on the fifth floor and the extreme potential for a slight earthquake or explosion to unleash a catastrophic radioactive chain of events ‘much worse than Chernobyl.’ “The spent fuel in the hobbled unit 4 at Fukushima Daiichi not only sits in an elevated pool outside the reactor core’s reinforced containment, in a high-consequence earthquake zone adjacent to the ocean — just as nearly all the spent fuel at the nuclear site is stored — but it’s also open to the elements because a hydrogen explosion blew off the roof during the early days of the accident and sent the building into a list.” (See photo) A mysterious black substance five times more radioactive than the Chernobyl-Belarus mandatory evacuation zone was discovered 4 kilometers from the center of Tokyo, the Hirai Station. The mystery radioactive black substance discovered close to Tokyo on the heels of the discovery of Cesium in Fukushima Prefecture 122 times higher than in Belarus evacuation zone. –DBTPK
Dr. Michio Kaku, Flashpoints Daily News Magazine interview: Humans cannot come close to certain parts of the reactor site and even robots get fried. They’re delicate machinery; their micro-circuitry cannot withstand the intense bombardment of radiation. We’re talking about thousands of rads of radiation per hour being registered there and that is affecting the cleanup operation. “It will take years to invent a new generation of robots” able to withstand the radiation. The workers are like Samurai warriors, they’re like suicide workers. They know they are getting huge amounts of radiation going to the site. They can only go in, seconds to minutes, at a time doing work and then the next batch has to come in. Chernobyl had a half a million workers who worked minutes at a time. Here we have a situation much worse than Chernobyl simply because we have basically five reactors that could go up. One reactor setting off the next reactor, that’s a huge amount of radiation, over ten times the radiation inventory found in Chernobyl. “People don’t realize that the Fukushima reactor (Number 4) is on a knife’s edge; it’s near the tipping point. A small earthquake, another pipe break, another explosion could tip it over and we could have a disaster much worse, many times worse than Chernobyl. It’s like a sleeping dragon. Just in the last few weeks it’s been in the paper to some degree, Units 2, 3, and 4 have been shown to be in a very dire situation. Unit 2, we now know completely liquefied. We’ve never seen this before in the history of nuclear power, a 100% liquefaction of a uranium core. Unit 3, on the other hand, Unit 4, on the other hand, has an even worse problem, and that it’s a spent fuel pond that is totally uncovered because of a hydrogen explosion that took place last year. The 1,500 rods that could be exposed to the air and then set off another spent pond with 6,000 rods. Altogether there are 11,000 rods in the Fukushima site that could be tipped over. A slight earthquake, a light explosion could set the whole reactor back into motion. And also, in regards to Unit 3, we found where we thought there was 33 ft. of water above the core. We put a TV camera in Units 2 and 3. We have TV pictures of the core; Unit 2 is completely liquefied, Unit 3 does not have 33 ft. of water on top of it, it has two feet of water. Two feet of water, not thirty-three, meaning that the core is completely, or partially covered, meaning it could liquefy. So between Units 2, which is completely liquefied, Units 3, which is totally exposed, and Unit 4, which has 1,500 spent fuel rods that, in principle, are exposed to the outside environment, we have a catastrophe in the making.” –Death by 1000 papercuts

They have to detonate a big H-Bomb over the site.
it will incinerate all remaining Plutonium and Hot Particles.
But it seem like they dont want to solve this plus.
detonating a Bomb of Hydrogen in itself leaves very little radiation,
but stalling the only solution only results in what you said here.
the long term consequences of no actions taken
is devastating to all life on Earth.
Hot Particles from Fukushima is detected as far as Boston.

I personally feel, that the main reason this horrific news has NOT gone ‘mainstream’ ( yet ), is because vested financial interests – Such as Wal-Street – do not want this to be.
    Here’s why.
IF and when Unit # 4 collapses, who is going to INVEST their chips in the stock market ?
Why buy stocks ? Why open a Savings account ?
WHY invest funds in my 401K, when I won’t be AROUND to retire, since I will most likely be long dead ??

I think that the Fukushima crisis, is already affecting people’s thinking, and is JUST ONE more reason, that leadership around the world is in crisis today….. BECAUSE they have LOST the faith and trust of the governed.

People worry about what is going to happen to this mess, and leaders seem more interested in extracting money out of Greece and other debt-saddled nations.
If Fukushima blows, this ^ will not matter anymore.

This is not good. Japan is having more earthquakes right now, and another big one can happen sometime soon. I was hoping that the “end-of-the-world” scenario would involve swift and sudden events, instead of slow, painful death such as from radiation poisoning. Nasty way to go.

Couple this with a global economic collapse, a potential thermal nuclear war in the Middle East, the endless retalitory terrorist events that will ripple from it, the increasing number of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, and death of the oceans, and the failure of growing seasons from extreme weather events and you’ve got your plate full. Then there are the threats from the skies.

    • There is a lot of misinformation from readers here. There is no safe level of radiation. There has been a “plume gate”…major cover-up on the giant plume of radiation that spread all over the Northern hemisphere in the weeks following the initial accident. Governments stopped measuring, but some scientists continued. It’s in Kelp in California, it’s in the food chain. We’ve breathed “hot particles” and they are the worst. Cancers will result in 1-10 years and other serious diseases, also. Thousands of children, babies have already died in the months following 3-11-11. ..they died of phneumonia and SIDS but it was from the radiation.

I’m confused. How even a major catastrophic event at the Fukushima mean the entire planet is doomed? Surely it would devastate Japan, possibly making the entire country uninhabitable like Chernobyl of today. And MAYBE some of the surrounding area, but beyond that?

We’ve had thousands of above ground nuclear test from the late 1940’s to present. Even a 50 or 100 Megaton detonation by the Russians at one point in history. How is this any different? Might raise cancer levels around the world, like Chernobyl, but beyond that? Not doubting this, just not understanding it fully. Can someone explain the consequences. Alvin?

Radiation means just that, it’s high energy particles that radiate outward by EM waves. It doesn’t sit still, ever. That’s what makes it so dangerous. There’s fears now that the accident is of such a critical nature and the levels of contamination are so high with exposure to the environment, ocean, soil and atmosphere that it may be beyond descent containment. What if the radiation begins to kill the crops in Japan and seeps into the ground water and then the ocean, and then the jet stream? What if Fukushima is the cancerous tumor that poisons the entire planet? How do you begin to build a concrete containment bunker around that many large reactors?

      • ‘End of the world’ as in the dangers are the lethal levels of toxic elements created by these reactions when uranium is split or when these reactors go into meltdown mode and or when they release the radiation into the environment like strontium 90 and cesium -137. There was enough grams of plutonium in the Chernobyl reactor to lethally kill 100 million people and that was one reactor. We’re createing these extremely dangerous chemicals, elements, and toxins, most with incredible half lives that remain potent for hundreds of years, that we have proven we cannot adequately contain in the event of an accident or meltdown. All this to boil water….in a nuclear reaction. We create such lethal toxins for energy… our death is the suicide approach we’ve already taken with energy.

Must of the H5N1 viruses also have a history of coming from Asia. What is the radiation starts genetic mutations in the influenza viruses for which we have no cure. There are all kinds of consequences from this that few have failed to see around. The man who fails to see the length of the ocean fails to sail with the proper boat.

All the government officials and the powers that be, have been, for several years, stock piling food, medicine and creating these underground huge shelters for them to escape into when things get bad here on the surface, such as nuclear war, Fukushima total meltdown and whatever other disasters will make life on the surface non sustainable. And, of course, they do not want the main stream media to report what is truly happening as human nature, being what it is, many will panic. I believe it would be better served to be forewarned as then most of us can prepare for whatever event happens. Many people are already prepared and have been prepping for some time, and not by any help from the government. We are pretty much on our own and I have prepared as best I can, and whatever happens will happen. One would think they might have learned from the Chernobyl incident… but no, we have kept multiplying and multiplying, using up all of our resources and now here we are, the virus, the cancer of this earth, a plague. Truly close to extinction by our own hand…

    Mitch, etc-

I talked to a guy last week who works at Savannah River in nuclear waste disposal ( they used to breed plutonium there).

He pointed out to me that in the 50s there were hundreds of nukes set off all over the world and there are particles of deadly radioactive dust everywhere already. Fukishima blowing up will just add more to the mix ( and he says moving to South America is a myth, it will be everywhere).

The main thing he said is that we do not fully understand radiation damage to humans. One person can breath in a particle of caesium and it is a death sentence, and another person can breath in 1000 particles and stay healthy. We saw this in Japan after the bombs with people who had identical exposures.

I started reading up online about protection from radiation. Ki only protects from the iodine isotopes. For the rest ( strontium, caesium, etc), they talk about seaweed and dark green vegetables and various dietary suggestions. Do some reading. Some minerals in pills or foods have chelating effect to bind up the radioactive minerals.

There may be a period of time after a first explosion, if the wind currents are going right over you, to wear a well fitting dust mask.

I need to go back and reread on this, and get some pills for my kids. Kelp maybe. One can hope there is no reason you need to be afraid if your body is ready for ingesting radioactive particles.

I do believe that different people can be exposed to radiation and their body’s respond another way in regards to the amount of illness or damage, or nothing for that matter. I use this example that perhaps many of us have seen. One person never smokes and dies of Lung Cancer, while another smokes like a chimney and live well past 90 then dies disease free of Debility (old age). Our bodies are all unique (a design by God I’m sure) just as we are as individuals. That property in and of itself helps make the species survive. Otherwise one germ could come along and wipe out the entire human population or an entire species.

This is true and once you saturate the environment with toxins; your days are numbered. We know the earth won’t be here this long in its present condition…but just let us suppose it would be for the sake of argument for the next 1500 years and everything we now know is layered over with dust. Archeological teams have gone on excavation digs around the remote regions of Ukraine and what’s left of the volcanically ruptured islands of Japan. They are looking for what they believe to be evidence of an advanced civilization that was rumored to exist sometime in the 21st century. Not equipped with Geiger counters, they cracked open dozens of buried sarcophaguses in Ukraine, Japan, and Nevada thinking these are some crude tombs left for future generations.

Uranium and plutonium are a particular concern because their half lives extends into the millions of years.

Many solders developed Gulf War Syndrome after serving on battlefields where depleted uranium ( “safe” claims Dept. of Defense) had been used , first in 1991 Gulf War. Many now have cancer , or are dying. High levels of DU, carried by air currents from Iraq and elsewhere , have been detected in the UK on a number of occassions. Nuclear weapons of another kind are being used without many realising it.

Then why purchase it?. It was reopened recently, more ore than originally thought, go figure!

But it won’t be. Seals must be opened and trumpets must be blown in heaven before the Lord comes and it will be no secret event- as every eye will behold him. Great and dreadful woes have yet to be sounded to the inhabiters of planet Earth proclaiming wonders of a mighty and frightful nature are soon to unfold in the heavens before us. In the meantime, on Earth, the wheat is languishing in the fields for a lack of laborers. Who would plunder the laborers from the fields in Earth’s 11th hour? We shall not enter into the joy of the Master’s house until we have first labored in His behalf in the fields. What discourse could any of us possibly hold with angelic beings in heaven at this juncture, whose faces are ablaze with the bright and terrible beams of glory emanating from the presence of God, when there are so many of our brothers and sisters left groping in the darkness of this world? The shame of our own neglect would crush us in their presence. Our greatest work is yet undone and many of us grasp not the nature of the solemnity of the events in celestial paradise of which some of us so haphazardly speak.

      • We all do. I’m not trying to be disparaging to any believer and all are entitled to their beliefs. I simple point to the fact that Christ’s life was one of endless sacrifice for man’s behalf. His ministry for the redemption and even health of bodies and souls bruised by the tempest of sin was continous to the point of physical exhausation. Likewise, unfallen heavenly angelic beings are engaged in ceaseless work of protection and ministry to God’s saints. These sacrifices from holy beings, who had no part in man’s fall and have taken every interest in his redemption and restoration to heaven, are testaments of the loving character of God.

“For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.” Romans 5:10

While we talk about redemption by the death of Christ, it is sometimes overlooked that there was salvation also by His life. He not only saved us by the fact that He died, He enpowers us with victory by the way that He lived. Every fierce temptation that Satan assailed a weakened Christ with in the wilderness was fought in our behalf, that we might overcome by His strength and power. The works He did while on Earth was to become a blueprint for the believer. “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father.” John 14:12. Our greatest hour on the world’s stage is yet before us. It is a time when the gospel message will be christened in the latter rain by “the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven; which things the angels desire to look into.” 1 Peter 1:12

One criminal asked for forgiveness and to be remembered the other did not. So that would say that even at the last minute with a sincere heart you can be saved. God knows your sincerity. Your reward and job in Heaven may be an other issue according to your works on earth. The Rapture, the beginning of Chapter 4 in the Book of Revelations, is imminent. What can it hurt to verify your loyalties at a time like this. Jesus is Lord. Focus on His truths to give you peace during such an unstable time. What can it hurt?

Our days as the human species on this planet that we mistakenly call our own are numbered & they have been since 1896 when Henri Becquerel accidently discovered radioactivity. That & subsequent discoveries was when Man finally found the solution to milleniums of war & his own demise. It is only through sheer luck & maybe the Creator’s Grace that we have so far avoided a full blown, world wide catastrophe. I’ve heard all the arguments that nuclear energy is clean, safe, viable & saves lives – I live a few hours away from the world’s largest known uranium deposit – but anything that has the capability to destroy like nuclear weapons does is not safe & should never have been trifled with. Who are we to design instruments of death & then drop them on our fellow man? Who are we to play around with such dangerous & destructive things? Who are we to dig enormous holes in the Earth & mine for this toxic mineral of death? How can we as custodians of this planet do such things? The places where these things are mined for, made & stored need to be filled in & then salted & we as humans need to ask the Divine for forgiveness for such reckless stupidity.

Matthew 24:21,22 says “for then there will be great tribulation such as has not occurred since the world’s beginning until now, no, nor will occur again. In fact, unless those days were cut short, no flesh would be saved; but on account of the chosen ones those days will be cut short.”

This sheds some more light on what the is called the Last Days Just think on the first few words for a moment:

a ‘great tribulation SUCH AS HAS NOT OCCURRED since the worlds beginning until now . . . ‘

    and

That Cree prophecy really sums up the world today and where we’re headed. Maybe not today, or tomorrow, but one day, very, very soon. I like to envision at the world as little as 100 years ago. Or even 125 years at most. Most of the land was still covered with forests, with rivers and lakes you could drink directly from, animals abound, plus clear unpolluted skies.

In such a short period of time the planet has been transformed by humans–not so much in terms of progress and technology, I’m talking about transformed in terms of destroying so much of nature and ruining the planet and eco systems. I mean just pause for a moment and look out your window, just look at cars and trucks alone and how many there are. How much damage do you think the hundreds of millions of these, spewing crap into the air 24/7, every day of the year, for decades on end, has done to our planet? Just everything about human civilization is rotten (read the stories Alvin shares with us here)….I don’t see progress, I see us destroying ourselves and everything around us, in so many different ways.

How much longer can this go on? It’s not sustainable. I honestly believe in my lifetime our human civilization, as we know it now, is going to reach its END GAME. Probably a good thing. The only way for the planet to heal itself is to shake us off (or if it doesn’t do it, we will). Kind of strange both are happening at once at the moment.

And in the midst of the week (three and one half years) he shall cause the sacrifice and offering (monetary reparation) to cease [for the remaining three and one-half years]; and upon the wing or pinnacle of abominations (president of United States) [shall come] one who makes desolate, until the full determined end is poured out on the desolator (United States).’ — Daniel 9:27 I am including another link to a UN treaty that was signed in August of 2009. This treaty deals with environment and promises developing nations that developed nations will pay them reparations for destroying their ecosystems. If this treaty is broken by the United States, it will be (according to the timeframe) immediately following the 2013 presidential inauguration in February. As Obama signed the treaty, he is unlikely to break it. Romney does not care about fiscal conservancy therefore it is unlikely that he would violate the treaty. The only candidate that comes to mind is Ron Paul. He is fiscally conservative (to the point where he would literally gut our government and infrastructure) and his foreign policy regards alliances as unnecessary (Revolution: A Manifesto). Paul has stated on numerous occasions that Israel must learn to stand on it’s own two feet and has openly proposed that we stop supporting Israel both financially and militarily. Revelation clearly states that ALL will stand against her in the last days. Ron Paul will be elected. Here is the link to the treaty. http://thewatchers.adorraeli.com/2012/05/17/forty-million-japanese-in-extreme-danger-of-life-threatening-radiation-poisoning-mass-evacuations-likely/

Japanese officials are currently engaging in talks with Russian diplomats about where tens of millions of Japanese refugees might relocate in the very-likely event that the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear facility’s Reactor 4 completely collapses. According to a recent report by EUTimes.net, Japanese authorities have indicated that as many as 40 million Japanese people are in “extreme danger” of radiation poisoning, and many eastern cities, including Tokyo, may have to be evacuated in the next few weeks or months to avoid extreme radiation poisoning.

So in an effort to establish contingency for the Japanese people in closest proximity to the fray, authorities are considering potentially relocating tens of millions of Japanese people to the Kuril Islands, which are located in Russia’s Sakhalin Oblast region, or potentially even to China, where hundreds of uninhabited “ghost town” cities with no apparent use could house at least 64 million refugees. If this relocation were to occur, Japan would largely become a barren wasteland.

Catastrophic nuclear accidents such as the core meltdowns in Chernobyl and Fukushima are more likely to happen than previously assumed. Based on the operating hours of all civil nuclear reactors and the number of nuclear meltdowns that have occurred, scientists at the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry in Mainz have calculated that such events may occur once every 10 to 20 years (based on the current number of reactors) — some 200 times more often than estimated in the past.

The researchers also determined that, in the event of such a major accident, half of the radioactive caesium-137 would be spread over an area of more than 1,000 kilometres away from the nuclear reactor.

I don’t remember it very well because I was little also, but I remember something about a mom holding her little boy over a sink because when he went to the bathroom it was just blood. Oh, how it terrified me. I hope you are wrong, but I’m afraid you are not.

elijahsmom3, the movie you’re thinking of is “Testament”, also from 1983. It dealt with the after effects of radiation poisoning on a small town, completely isolated from the actual nuclear attacks and otherwise untouched damage-wise. An excellent film, albeit very frightening and depressing because of its realism.

Even better than The Day After is a British film called “Threads” from 1984. If you ever wanted to wake someone up about the determent of nuclear war, THIS was it. I’d also recommend “When the Wind Blows” from 1986, an animated British film about the effects of radiation poisoning. All three are very powerful films (Testament, Threads and When the Wind Blows), I’d highly recommend giving them a watch if you haven’t already.

I expect that my interpetion of this is incorrect. But was’nt the only time Jesus showed anger, was in the Temple and directly squarely at greed and disrespect.? Fukushima was a stupid mistake. It will probably be felt worldwide, unless some way is found to get it under control. That dreadful oil spill was a stupid mistake. We are capable of mistakes. (and those amonst us throw the first stone)
Maybe these events are “an elbow in the ribs”. He might be saying “This Earth is not yours, it’s mine” Maybe, just perhaps, He sees our Earth as a temple.
And never has there been so much greed, and disrespect, transacted in his temple. Only a thought.

    Alvin,

Something’s been bothering me about this news since I read it and I realized what the article said about Fukushima Reactor 2 (light bulb).

“Unit 2, we now know completely liquefied. We’ve never seen this before in the history of nuclear power, a 100% liquefaction of a uranium core.”

In the history of nuclear power, man has never seen a uranium reactor core completely liquefy – never.

Does this mean there is complete fusion of the core in reactor two, similar to the fusion of a neutron star?

I really don’t know what 100% liquefaction of the core means.

Emmani, I was wondering the same thing, but not sure if I want to know the answer. When I read the article, those two sentences stood out more than any of the others.

Emmani – That’s a nice way of saying that the core had a Complete, ‘runaway’ meltdown.

But…..what does that mean? Or maybe they don’t know what it means since it’s never happened before. It sounds insanely ominous and foreboding. Like there could be nothing worse……

Well, in a ‘meltdown’ scenario, the core of the reactor, with no way to control the temperature, goes into ‘runaway mode’, that it overheats and melts itself down….. Taking part of the confinement structure along with it as it melts its way through the floor of the structure.

The problem is that, now that the core has melted it’s way though the bottom of the structure, there is no way to ‘contain’ it, or control it.

Since this has not happened before, the end-results of the meltdown, are subject to speculation.
At some point, the ‘corium’ <-(the melted-down byproducts and slag from the uranium, plutonium and whatever else was used to build the core – whether steel, aluminum, concrete, etc.) will continue to melt its way through the ground, into the bedrock, polluting and radiating as it goes.
Depending on what the local geography is like, I suppose the corium would eventually dilute itself enough to start cooling off and become more viscous….. But it would still be highly radioactive.
This will hamper clean-up and containment efforts (which is what is happening now.)

BUT now the NEW, and bigger challenge at Fukushima, is not the meltdown ….The unexpected by-product of the disaster, is trying to 'control' the temperature and maintain containment, of the "spent" fuel rods. These are still very radioactive, and potentially very dangerous….. stored inside the broken building or buildings.
