NASA astronauts begin training program for asteroid landing mission

May 16, 2012 SPACENASA astronauts are getting ready to start to prepare for what could be one of the most challenging mission to date, a trip to an asteroid. Next month they will begin a training program that will teach them how to operate vehicles, conduct spacewalks and gather samples on the surface of an asteroid. The work will be mainly scientific, but the data gleaned from the asteroid could one day be useful if there is ever one with a destiny for the surface of Earth. Major Tim Peake, a former British Army helicopter test pilot who is now the first official British astronaut with the European Space Agency, had this to say: “With enough warning we would probably send a robotic mission to deflect an asteroid, but if something is spotted late and is big enough we might come into Armageddon type scenarios where we may have to look at manned missions to deflect it.” The training will start next month when Major Peake will join 5 other people in an underwater training station off the coast of Florida. The capsule they will share is 43 feet long by 20 feet wide tube, is 65 feet under water, and will be their home for 12 days. The facility is called the Nasa Extreme Environment Mission Operation or NEEMO. “NEEMO is as close to the real thing as we can manage on Earth. We are in a confined space and living quarters are very tight,” said Peake, “We will need at least 12 hours of decompression before we can resurface safely so we are sort of trapped down there, and that makes it much more realistic.” The mission is hoping to use the Orion spacecraft that sits atop the Space Launch System. Once there, the astronauts would live in a Deep Space Habitat and traverse the landscape using a Space Exploration Vehicle (SEV). –Web Pro News

And maybe training to prevent an asteroid collision, how to get rid of an asteroid

dig a hole in the asteroid and plant a nuke in what we call the “Bruce Willis style”

What do they know that we do not?

is Bruce Willis going to be in charge? this will never happen, what about the radiation dangers,
US astronauts have never been higher than LOW EARTH ORBIT, this mission is a total CON!!

Training starts next month for a mission in 2035, yeah right by the time 2035 arrives the people doing the training now will be to old for such a mission

Sounds like a good plot for a movie. Oh wait, they did that plot before – a couple of times.

After thinking about it I recalled reading an article about an Asteroid that could pose a threat to the Earth early 2013, here is that article. http://rt.com/news/paint-asteroid-earth-nasa-767/ I now wonder if these two are connected in some way.

After all who has ever heard of a mission that requires 23 years of very expensive training by people who will obviously be much older, that is if they are still alive and havenot been taken by natural/accidental causes.

That was my first thought too Hamish…..NASA researchers say it won’t hit earth in 2013 but will come close. I think it’s called 2012 DA14. This would be a good one to practice on for when the real deal shows up.

Hey, depending on which one they’re talking about, they could just wait until it crashes here and study it then.

    Alvin,
Who knows what to believe from NASA anymore..sad. What do you think about the theory of an unknown planet/star the government has been trying to cover up since 1983? Could it be the cause of much unrest on several planets and disrupting the mantel of the earths core and causing gravity to weaken? Do you believe this is the cause of earth quakes, magma surfacing, unsettled weather, volcanic awakening..etc?

    I have several questions.
    1) Does the exploration of other worlds the money spent the genious diverted today contribute to the decay of earth and what could have been here tomorrow?
    2) With all their insight to the future why dont they do something on earth that will benifite the people other than for the residual effects of terraforming another planet?
