One of the largest sunspot groups in years slowly rotating towards Earth

May 8, 2012 SPACEOne of the largest sunspot groups in years rotated over the sun’s northeastern limb this weekend. With a least four dark cores larger than Earth, AR1476 sprawls more than 100,000 km from end to end, and makes an easy target for backyard solar telescopes. Indeed, the active region is crackling with impulsive M-class solar flares. Based on the sunspot’s complex ‘beta-gamma’ magnetic field, NOAA forecasters estimate a 75% chance of more M-flares during the next 24 hours. There is also a 10% chance of powerful X-flares. –Space Weather

    • We have some wild conditions right now for trouble on the Sun. A large sunspot cluster combined with a large coronal hole facing earthward. Let’s see what becomes of this scenario. Hopefully, it will pass. Sooner or later though, if not this, we’ll get hit with a large CME blast. It’s not a question of if but when…

I’m guessing that we would be extremely lucky to avoid a big flare from this bad boy.

There has been reports submitted as far back as the Bush Administration that the Sun….. Well, the description was called a cold sun with little sunspot activity that was being expected, in that an expectation of a slight cooling trend here on Earth…..with Europe facing very cold temps which I think they did somewhat this past winter….
