Flames and smoke erupt from ground in Kinniya, Sri Lanka

May 6, 2012SRI LANKAA large crowd flocked to see flames and smoke which mysteriously appeared from a hole dug up in Turai Adi in Kinniya today (May 04). Abdul Kader Farook, who lives near Kinniya Bridge, was digging a hole near his home to dump garbage had noticed flames and smoke coming out of the earth. He had subsequently contacted the police regarding the incident. Police and army personnel were deployed to the location to control the crowds after a tense situation had ensued. –Adaderana

    Coal vein fire ? Or something else ??
    My guess is that this may fall into the ‘something else’ category. Curious to find out how this story develops.

    Reminds me of abandoned landfills in Arizona where compressed trash became toxic over time and converted to smoke, then combustible. I am not sure if that’s the case here for anything is possible these days.

      We had those landfills here in Ohio too, so that could be a possibility, since they bury their trash. Either that, or an underground volcano.

  3. there are coal mines in that area of the world which are just below the ground .perhaps its related to one of those surface coal mines catching fire again.j.
