Super moon returns to night skies on May 5, 2012

May 1, 2012SPACE Skywatchers take note: The biggest full moon of the year is due to arrive this weekend. The moon will officially become full Saturday (May 5) at 11:35 p.m. EDT. And because this month’s full moon coincides with the moon’s perigee — its closest approach to Earth — it will also be the year’s biggest. The moon will swing in 221,802 miles (356,955 kilometers) from our planet, offering skywatchers a spectacular view of an extra-big, extra-bright moon, nicknamed a super moon. And not only does the moon’s perigee coincide with full moon this month, but this perigee will be the nearest to Earth of any this year, as the distance of the moon’s close approach varies by about 3 percent, according to meteorologist Joe Rao, SPACE.com’s skywatching columnist. This happens because the moon’s orbit is not perfectly circular. This month’s full moon is due to be about 16 percent brighter than average. In contrast, later this year on Nov. 28, the full moon will coincide with apogee, the moon’s farthest approach, offering a particularly small and dim full moon. Though the unusual appearance of this month’s full moon may be surprising to some, there’s no reason for alarm, scientists warn. The slight distance difference isn’t enough to cause any earthquakes or extreme tidal effects, experts say. However, the normal tides around the world will be particularly high and low. At perigee, the moon will exert about 42 percent more tidal force than it will during its next apogee two weeks later, Rao said. The last supermoon occurred in March 2011. –SPACE

The supermoon last year caused the Japan earthquake. Expect another earthquake this weekend too. It will be the southern San Andreas fault, which has not had a big earthquake in over 150 years…this one will be a 8+, and/or the cascadia fault line off t coast of northern California. When the cascadia fault line erupts, which it has not in several hundred years & is way over due…the destruction will be biblical….Seattle & many other cities will be destroyed

Yeah, don’t worry folks! Just ignore the reams of data showing a definite corralation to quake increases & forget all about the upcoming planetary alignments, they have to Earthly impact either. It’s all good, go back to watching The Voice & leave the thinking to us!

Later this year all the planets are supposed to line up . I was wondering if the planets lined up will cause a chain of gravitational pull that could tear are world apart? It would explain why major catastrophes happen every 13 thousand years or so?

That’s news to me. Richard Noone predicted a similar event would occurr on May 5, 2000 during a planetary alignment, including a pole-shift and nothing happened. Distance determines gravitational effect, not linear aligments. In astrophysics, this is known as SOI. In other words, if 5 people stood in a linear line and the first one hit you- will it hurt more because 4 people are aligned behind him?

Alvin, I remember the nay sayers that predicted “doom & gloom” would occur on May 5th. 2000. I made the same offer of holding onto wallets then also, but I did’nt have any takers then either.

Please correct me if I am wrong, but isn’t there a theory that a full moon causes earthquakes? And if so, is there any sites that I could look at that have full moons and earthquakes charted? I’m sort of new at this stuff.

    • Gabelgirl, you can start here:

      http://www.accuweather.com/en/weather-news/supermoon-and-earthquakes-is-t/46883

The moon’s gravitational effect on the Earth is seen in tidal bulge around the equator and in tides in the oceans but even more importantly is the Earth’s gravitational effect on the moon. If there is seismicity or minor tremors from the interaction; it’s going to occurr on the moon as opposed to the Earth because the Earth’s influence is greater.

Hi Alvin, In NZ a fellow by the name of Ken Ring sucessfully predicted weather events and earthquakes including the large Christchurch earthquake in September 2010 using the moons orbit/gravitional pull etc. He got a lot of news coverage….became a household name…’The Moon Man’! Although on closer inspection in turned out that he had made 200 predictions of earthquakes in 2010, using his moon-theory. Making 200 predictions out of a possible 365 days of the year and getting a couple of events right = Moon man…..NOT a guru!!! Peace Always.

Alvin, I have one. In 2010, Japan made a series of condemnations against Israel for new construction of 1600 housing units. On March 10th 2010, The statement by The Goverment of Japan deplores the building of Jewish homes in East Jerusalem and to the 112 units to be built in west bank after indirect talks with the palestians and isreal that prejudges the final status of Jerusalem and the territories in the pre-1967 borders.
Japan demands that the plans should not be implemented!
This was the last statement before the earthquake.
        http://www.mofa.go.jp/announce/announce/2010/3/0311_01.html
So, on March 11th 2011, japan has the 9.0, is moved about 63 feet. Remember Egypt at the Red Sea.
        Just a thought………….

Lol thanks Alvin! 2011 march (11) earthquake 8.9…… 2011 march (19) super moon. The only corilation if any would be that the super moon globaly slowed the waves from the tsunami that occurred over a week before.

I think that we should remember that the moon and sun have an effect on fluids, not nearly so much with solids so if anything perhaps the magma near the Earth’s crust could be pulled about and that could possibly cause volcanoes that are already on the verge of popping their tops to finally let loose some and maybe that super hot plasma melt a rift on a fault line or two somewhere causing a bang as the rocks close that gap but I would not neccessarily expect anything big to happen. We all tend to oversimplify God’s intricate creation with even numbered years and perfect alignments etc. but there is so much more involved than meets the eye. Most of which we don’t know.

I read that the closest the planets came to alignment was somewhere around 500 BC and may come close again in the late 29th century. Not in our lifetime. It’s an interesting subject for sure!

Once again, thank you for this site, Alvin. There’s a big difference between watching earth changes and being prepared, from getting caught up with conspiracy theories and doom and gloom. It’s very easy to get caught up in unrealistic and unscientific ideas and conspiracies. I’ve done it myself. That’s why I love this site so much. Although many may consider all of this doom and gloom, I call it knowledge. If I’m going down, I want to know what hit me.

Good grief! Not another link to the invisible “PlanetX” that “meandered through our solar system” until(depending on who you ask), some time between 2003 & 2011, it threw on the brakes, took up orbit on the oposite side of the Sun from us, where it alternates between peeking out one side of the Sun or the other(so the “Faithful Awake Ones” can see it on SOHO, but only when the “PlanetX deletion Software” that “EVERYONE knows NASA is using, runs slow enough for a few lucky ducks to snap a picture) & flipping it’s 30-70 million mile long tail at Earth to remind us who’s boss. *rolls eyes* Not THAT rediculous “Theory” again? You guys & gals DO realize that this “wending” “meandering but never waivering in it’s goal of orbiting the Sun” was supposed to destroy Earth back in 2003, this according to “Go kill your pets while I channel the Zeta’s to find out what’s going to happen next” Nancy, right?

John Kilby said, ‘Isn’t the sun supposed to flip poles this year sometime?’ As Alvin said, sometime before the end of this solar cycle next year the polarities are supposed to change, but I read recently that it is happening this year…one year early and for an unknown reason the north poles are ahead of the south poles which is an unusual event. What it means…only God may truly know. Scientists seemed to be perplexed frequently this year, and that too is just as God intended it. Interesting time like no other and the best is yet to come. God bless us one and all.

Planetary alignments and astronomical events occur all the time. Nothing lasts forever, and the universe is constantly changing. It’s quite possible there will be a major earth change during this event. It’s also quite possible that you will be hiding in an underground shelter for nothing. The only thing more frightening than death is not living. Enjoy what God has given you and appreciate what you do have. There will be many changes coming this year, and there is nothing anyone can do to change that, but we can change our reactions to it. Accept the life you have been given. Go live your life and enjoy it! Life is too short to be spending it worrying about what you cannot change. God will take care of the rest.
