New study indicates Yellowstone erupts more frequently than previously thought

April 30, 2012 YELLOWSTONENew research is casting doubts on the frequency or even the possibility of a ‘super-eruption’ that could blot out the sun from the Earth with a thick veil of volcanic ash. A joint research team from Washington State University and the Scottish Universities Environmental Research Centre said the biggest Yellowstone eruption on record was actually two different eruptions at least 6,000 years apart. According to the study published in the June 2012 issue of the Quaternary Geochronology, these eruptions are thought to have created the Huckleberry Ridge around 2 million years ago.  The first eruption generated 2,200 cubic kilometers of volcanic material, while the second, smaller eruption generated 290 cubic kilometers. The first eruption is still considered to be ‘super’ according to the Volcanic Explosivity Index (VEI) and likely covered the sky in volcanic ash from California to the Mississippi River. The VEI was developed by Chris Newhall of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and Sephen Self at the University of Hawaii in 1982. The open-ended scale ranges from 0 to 8 and is based on the volume of material produced, eruption cloud height, and other qualitative observations. Small continuously erupting volcanoes, like those found in Hawaii, are considered a zero on the VEI. The 1980 Mount St. Helens eruption and the Vesuvius eruption in 79 C.E., both of which produced about 1 cubic km of volcanic material, rank in the middle of the pack at five on the VEI. The recent study’s findings suggest that the volcanic formation known as the Island Park Caldera is more active than previously thought and could help geologists to more accurately predict its next seismic event. The caldera is actually comprised of two smaller calderas and stretches 58 miles from Wyoming to Idaho. “The Yellowstone volcano’s previous behavior is the best guide of what it will do in the future,” said study co-author Ben Ellis of Washington State University. “This research suggests explosive volcanism from Yellowstone is more frequent than previously thought.” In calculating the different layers of rock and sediment, the team honed radioactive dating techniques involving the potassium 40 and argon 40 isotopes. These radioactive elements act as a “rock clock” for dating samples and have a precision of 0.2 percent. Darren Mark, study co-author at the Scottish research center, recently helped fine tune the technique to improve it by 1.2 percent—an exponential improvement in accuracy. “Improved precision for greater temporal resolution is not just about adding another decimal place to a number, says Mark. ”It’s far more exciting. It’s like getting a sharper lens on a camera. It allows us to see the world more clearly.” While the last known Yellowstone eruption to cause a lava flow was about 70,000 years ago, smaller steam-only eruptions have caused seismic events like the one at Yellowstone Lake almost 14,000 years ago that created a 5 km crater. The Old Faithful geyser is probably the most famous evidence of ongoing volcanic activity at Yellowstone Park.  The geyser erupts between every 65 and 91 minutes, depending of the duration of the previous eruption. –Red Orbit

  1. The science community will study, and wonder – The Lord will release it’s fury on that chosen day.

Boom! Jackpot! I have been reading your website for some time….I appreciate your brilliance and balance. Thank you…

I was listening to an interview with Stan Deyo (from Apr 14th, 2012). This is what Stan said:

“There is a new vent discovered to the North and West of Yellowstone in the last year or so. A lot of seismologists have been called in to work on it. All have had to sign non-disclosure & secrecy agreements with the govn’t. Apparently this new vent is building quite a pool of magma & they are concerned that there may be a major eruption. Even the truck drivers delivering supplies have to sign secrecy agreements. One person working there had a family member call Stan about it with some of the details. He couldn’t elaborate because it would finger the person releasing the info. But there is a huge data stream coming out of there. There is a lot of study going on. He said he saw some of the early seismic data and that it is frightening, or rather serious anyway, because when the major earthquake happened over in Japan, almost instantly, it showed on the computer servers over in yellowstone. This means they are connected somehow with the hydraulic pressure vents under the crust of the Earth.”

I’v come to the conclusion with scientific studies that they are about as much bs, as unfortunately science itself. They are constantly backtracking whether it’s space, medical, environmental, or social issues they tend to prove themselves wrong in the end. I stick with the facts, or they’ll have you jumping through hoops and back through before you know it. Yellowstone is a super volcano. It has massive eruptions. Most likely that eruption would give a small heads up at least with swarms etc. To note that it will or will not, or when it will or will not, is simply their theory…it’s called the Theory of science! And theories are basically educated(or uneducated) guesses, which has been the trend the last two years.

I love to read comments that express so well what I’ve been thinking…thank you King Kevin, and as always, thank you Alvin for attracting these types of people to your website, because there are some people out there that don’t play with a full deck!

Lol not sure if that was a negative comment towards me but I’m right. science is so turned around at this point. Don’t get me wrong there are a lot of weird things going on, but you must use logic over paranoia.

It seems; according to the Hidden Texts that there is a super volcano under Etna, Nostradamus calls it the ERUPTIVE SERBIAN BASIN ALIVE
The recent Urals meteor – according to the hidden texts – was AIMED to SET OFF ETNA
which it did – and on the date too.
There are Other Worlders who are against the agenda of those who AIMED the Aten (a name Nostradamus gives asteroids). These did ameliorate the Urals consequences
