Loud boom over Northern California and Nevada thought to be from meteor

April 22, 2012Northern, CA People in Northern California and Nevada reported hearing a loud boom in the sky above the Sierra Sunday morning. The Tuolumne County sheriff’s department said they are investigating the possibility that it might have been the physical impact of an overnight meteor shower. Some people in the Tahoe area said they saw what they believed to be a meteor just prior to the sound. People who live in Lake Tahoe, El Dorado County, Placer County, Tuolumne County, Amador County and Nevada County contacted our sister station in Sacramento. KCRA is reporting that they heard the sound just after 8:30 a.m. A television station in Reno said they received similar calls from the city of Reno and as far away as Incline Village. Meteorologists in California and Nevada including our own Rob Mayeda said there were meteor showers Saturday night that could have still been going on Sunday morning. If the boom was a signal that an outer space rock made its way through the atmosphere, then there could be a rock or rocks now on Terra Firma. So far, no one has called authorities or television stations to report “a hit.” Mayeda said the meteor would likely be a bolide rock and that it likely burned up before getting to the ground. Every year the Earth passes through the orbit of a comet causing the Lyrid meteor shower. The results on a clear night are a meteor shower, which comes in the form of shooting stars streaking across the night sky. The stars are actually debris from the comet as it enters the Earth’s atmosphere. –NBC Bay area

Our local news station here in Redding, California reported people calling in on Friday night 4/20/12 reporting a loud boom, bright light and homes shaking around 1045pm. It was heard and felt all around the north state. I didn’t see it, but driving home around 920pm my family and I witnessed something falling from the sky (meteorite?). It didn’t shoot across the sky, but came straight down and flashed brightly mid way down.
I have been following your site, and was wondering if we were ever going to get any ”booming” here in northern California. Now apparently it’s happened twice and of course I didn’t hear it lol. Go figure.
Keep up the good work Alvin

I was at the Cool april nights drags in redding at that same time and My back was more towards the sky and I was looking down at the ground when the ground and everything else turned like a blue-ish/bright light and I heard something like rushing in the air (I thought it was like a plane crash) But I turned quickly and saw a flaming ball rushing through the sky breaking into pieces and a few minutes after that I heard a huge boom, Like someone in the mountains blew up something… I sware I heard people by the drags “Ooo-ing and Aww-ing, Wow-ing” at it But Idk, I haven’t heard anything about it.. Kinda freaked me out. lol

I live in Petaluma California and have four different people from around town telling me that they all witnessed a light followed by a boom/rumbling on Friday night at around 10pm. I was working and didn’t notice it but there were reports of many 911 calls regarding it and no explosions reported. Also first hand reports from people living in Truckee as well.

hi alvin , i sincerly do not want to seem disrespectful or rude when i say this as i have tremendous respect for this website and view it daily , but i find it curious that with all the evidence and documentation on here and also from what i read you seem very well researched, you remain religeous . i do not want anyone to view this message as hostile because it is not intended in fact i feel im the other side of the same coin , non religious but just as interested and invested in educating myself and others on the planetary changes. • Craig, you’re not being disrespectful and I appreciate your interest and the support of the site. One doesn’t have to be religious to see what’s happening on the planet and the changes that are unfolding. I do, however, have one constant in life since my earliest days and that is God, which has not moved or ceased to encricle me in His love and grace. That’s my journey…I can’t speak for anyone else.

Glad you like the site and wishing you the best,

The US Government makes loud booms all the time in Iraq, Aganistan and Pakistan also sufers terrorism exported by US made Drones, Missles & new fangled weaponry that needs a test.
Criminal elements “in charge” have a heartless agenda that is divorced from reality & Mother Earth.

I live in Sonora CA and was watching the amazing meteor shown from the night before, but I missed the entry of this one. SO Glad you found a picture of it. The sonic boom was SO LOUD. The windows in my house rattled, the pictures vibrated on the walls. I honestly thought my neighbors house had blown up in a propane explosion. AMAZING force. Thank you for not missing this huge event. ~Sirena W

I was driving up the 280 south of San Francisco on Friday night and saw a huge explosion of a large or low exploding meteorite in a northern or northeastern direction sometime between 10:30 and 10:45… greenish tinge to the explosion iirc

What about the loud boom this morning at 1 am. When I got to work a dozen people mentioned it. Someone must know what is causing this. It is not the first time.
