Iran to begin building copy of captured American surveillance drone

April 22, 2012 IRAN – Iran has begun building a copy of the U.S. surveillance drone it captured last year, after breaking its encryption codes, Iranian officials say. “The Americans should be aware to what extent we have infiltrated the plane,” General Amir Ali Hajizadeh, military aerospace chief said. The RQ-170 Sentinel was shown on Iranian state television last December. Tehran says it was brought down using electronic warfare; Washington says it malfunctioned. U.S. Senator Joe Lieberman dismissed the claim that a copy was being made as “Iranian bluster’ saying, “they’re on the defensive because of our economic sanctions against them.” But Gen Hajizadeh said: “Our experts have full understanding of its components and program.” He said that Iran had managed to hack the controls of the drone, thus enabling the Iranians to reverse-engineer the aircraft to make its own copy. U.S. officials have previously asked for the drone to be returned but Iran has refused, saying that the U.S. should instead apologize for invading Iranian air space. Washington has long said that Iran will find it hard to exploit any data and technology aboard it because of measures taken to limit the intelligence value of drones operating over hostile territory. Although analysts believe lessons could certainly be learnt about how the machine was put together, reverse-engineering has generally been seen by experts as beyond Iran’s capability. –BBC

UPDATE: A number of people in the Sierra around El Dorado County have reported they saw what they believed to be a meteor just before the sound.

The El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office tells News 4 they cannot confirm anything landed in their jurisdiction, but do tell us they have received a number of phone calls regarding the incident.

RENO, Nev. (KRNV & – A large boom was heard Sunday morning around 8:00am around Northern Nevada and the Sierra.

Washoe County Sheriff’s Dispatchers tell News 4 they have received calls from “everywhere” including the Reno metro area to as far away as Incline Village.

The Sheriff’s Office says they are tying to find the source of the boom, but do not know what cause the boom.

There have been reports of the boom being heard in Minden, South Lake Tahoe and Truckee.

  2. If they had Russian and Chinese help, (which a recent article I read says they did have) they may have cracked the codes. Now whether they can replicate the technology (alloys and stealth features) is another story, what worries me is that they may be able to clone it just enough to infiltrate our defenses during a time of crisis ie. an alpha strike on their nuke facilities, to where they can strike back at us kamakazi style with multiple drones “returning” from missions….

Each time there is a U.S. military accident around the world involving property/equipment with highly sensitive avionics, the U.S. military goes through painstaking, but necessary process of rewriting the mind-boggling code for the entire system depending on the mission and the branch of military i.e., communications, avionics, handheld devices, satellite transmission, electronics etc.

Iran can build a similar system, but to replicate the complex code and schematics is next to impossible. If it ever became the case many rogue countries would be on par with our technology. Reverse engineering the (shell) design is plausible, but it’s the code (that is uniquely American) other countries have difficulties duplicating.

    No doubt TEP!

Update on Petrochemical Complex Fire: 2nd Explosion in the Morning of April 22, Depleted Uranium Containers Safe

UPDATE: FNN News says there are about 3,400 containers of depleted uranium at the plant, but according to Mitsui Chemical there is no damage to the containers.

NHK has a fixed camera nearby (5 kilometers from the plant). The second explosion took place at 8AM on April 22. (My original post on the accident is here.)

You can go to NHK to view the video clip.

So far, 1 worker is dead, 11 workers including workers at the adjacent plant injured, with two severely injured. 5 residents living nearby were injured by broken glass.

The most fleeting secrets are those that are military. it seems.
Reverse engineering is not new. In world war II, we captured a fully workable Japanese fighter plane (code name zero) and deisgned a fighter plane(s) to
    defeat it.

    • Funny, no one has ever yet reverse-engineered the pyramids.

      • Phyllis says:

and they never will, shoot, they are still trying to figure out the mysteries of the pyramids, and probably wont.

      • Dennis E. says:

Because, the designers/ master builders of the pyramids were not of this world…….And, up to now, I have not considered the pyramids a military asset,Hmmm. The Russians reverse engineered the B-29 bomber from four that landed on their land during world war II and it was nato code name,”bull” bomber–TU-4.
It is also rumored that the US has reversed engineered Alien Tech and is applying it to our society/military machine.
I’m so full of information today………….

  7. TexasRedNeck says:

Why has’nt our military learned by now that things like this happen and designed a self destruct
bomb instead of allowing our equipment to fall into the wrong hands, it would certainly be better than to “give” the enemy our secrets.

  8. T says:

I truly agree with TexasRedNeck, that is just asking for trouble if America gives the enemy all of our secrets and information.
