Pity it couldn’t be a bit later; all we’ll get to see in my neck o’the woods are big fat rainclouds;-)

Solar poles to become quadrupolar in May

    The Yomiuri Shimbun

Magnetic field polarity at the solar poles will reverse and become quadrupolar in May, meaning positive fields will emerge in the North and South poles and negative fields will emerge on the equator, according to the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan and other institutes.

When a similar phenomenon occurred about 300 years ago, the Earth’s average temperature fell slightly.

A research team led by Saku Tsuneta, a professor at the observatory, analyzed solar magnetic fields data using Hinode, an observational satellite, and confirmed that the polarity of the magnetic field at the North Pole began to reverse in July last year.

The researchers also found the magnetic field at the South Pole, which was expected to reverse along with the North Pole, maintained a positive polarity, ensuring the formation of a quadrupole magnetic field.

The cause behind the shifts in polar fields is not understood. However, it is known that the shifts coincide with the increase and decrease in the number of sunspots over an about 11-year cycle.

The current sunspot cycle has stretched for close to 13 years. A similar situation occurred in the 17th to 18th century, when the average temperature of the Northern Hemisphere decreased by 0.6 C. The research team believes the quadrupolar pattern also emerged at that time.

      • Wow!!
This is big news and unfortunately not making the western news feeds, one has to wonder , why ?!

      • So check this out NASA has been studying Solar poles becoming quadrupolar since 2003 http://science.nasa.gov/science-news/science-at-nasa/2003/22apr_currentsheet/ But the section labeled — The Sun Does a Flip (Science@NASA) In 2001 NASA scientists watched the Sun’s dipolar magnetic magnetic flip — a sure sign that solar maximum had arrived —.It isn’t view-able, but on April 4th the SDO Solar Dynamics Observatory made the sun spin around we were all joking about the sun Flipping. Then I read Twice a year, the SDO spacecraft performs a 360 degree roll about the spacecraft-sun line. This roll maneuver allows us to remove the instrument optical distortions from the solar images taken by HMI to precisely determine the solar limb. You wouldn’t actually see it flip if the poles reversed, would you? Thanks Luisport you always have interesting informative info.

Thank you Luisport for this update. Solar cycle 24 has been weaker and different from others anyway, and now this. Interesting to see if will have any effects on Earths magnetic field.

I believe the sun is doing something but also has anyone just sit in the sun for a little while? seems to be much hotter like a burning hot compared to what it used to be… :l

Nothing is new under the sun; including a history of Earth with the negative poles aligned with the equator of the earth. As this will bring high energy solar wind to the highest emission of charge on the planet, this means super sized weather systems. Stupe valley outisde of Lima Peru of ancient history (10,000y) comes to mind with its siting in a protective walled valley.

Thank you Kate…..! So much is going on in the world around us,it truly does seem that the earth is changing. The evidence has been written on the face of creation, even though we have all this knowledge….it’s still a wonder to see that nature is it’s own master!
