Activity intensifies at Mexico’s Popocatepetl volcano: 19 million could be affected by an eruption

April 19, 2012MEXICO The Popocatepetl volcano is making movement and threatening to erupt, causing Mexican officials to raise the alert level from yellow phase three to yellow phase two. The volcano has already begun spewing red-hot bits of rock, and its opening has expanded. These are signs that the volcano, still quite active, could soon erupt. In a statement by Mexico’s National Center for Disaster Prevention, the volcano could produce “moderate exhalations, some with ash, sporadic low to moderate explosions with likely burning fragments, and flaming magma within the crater.” Residents and tourists have been advised to remain at least seven miles away from the volcano’s base, lest magma or hot rock injure anyone. Mexico has been experiencing natural disasters with increasing frequency. On Friday, officials at the U.S. Geological Survey reported a 5.4 magnitude earthquake six miles off Mexico’s Pacific Coast. It was powerful enough to shake buildings 230 miles away in Mexico City. Thankfully no one was hurt in that earthquake, and the country was left relatively unscathed. A 7.4 magnitude earthquake hit just two days earlier, again not injuring anyone but leaving Mexico City residents shaken. According to Reuters, it was the third earthquake in less than one month. The last major earthquake struck on March 20, injuring 11 in Oaxaca and two in Mexico. The Popocatepetl volcano last erupted in 2000, and in 2005 it released a high volume of smoke and ash. Lava was also released during 2005, and since then it has remained relatively quiet. Only in 2012 has it begun moving and acting again. Reuters is reporting that several schools have closed in light of the level change and residents are beginning to evacuate the city. If it fully erupted, over 19 million residents would be affected. –The Christian Post

I live in Chalco which is in the middle between the volcano and Mexico City. The information you have provided is not accurate. Mexico City inhabitants are not at risk AT ALL. And they are not evacuating the City. There are some little towns at the foot of the volcanoes and just those are the ones that are at certain risk.

    • I’m glad we have your report from the scene to balance any discrepancies. Thanks Adelaida.

Popocatepetl is one of the highest active volcanoes of the world, rising up higher than 5,000 meters above sea level. An explosion, which could occur anytime, would be catastrophic for all areas around it. Winds usually flow direction Southeast so the most dangerous city is Puebla and surroundings, and all that area is quite populated. My grandfather, who is 88 years old, climbed the mountain many times when young, and he says that he never saw it so active during all this years. For me it is very clear, the earth is waking up, get ready people!

I can’t see from the article that the volcano pose any risk for the Mexico City inhabitants. The article mentions some eartquakes that has affected the city. Thats all.

people think its normal to have earthquakes but its not normal when they are occurring world wide at an alarming rate , your having earth quakes and you volcano is erupting …??? sounds pretty bad to me i guess ash clouds and sulfur aren’t so bad after all..

From what I have heard there are no meteors coming and no alien visitation coming. It is just a scare tactic.

I’ve just read ‘The Twelfth Planet’ by Zecharia Sitchin and although he brings up some pertinent information, it’s just hypothesis. Planet X or Nibiru or whatever you want to call it does not exist. However, ancient civilisations did exist, and the worrying part is, they were in what is now Iraq, Iran, Libya and Syria.
Read into that what you will, but I am very suspect of a ‘rogue’ planet. Perhaps an explanation might be the Sun looks dark due to so much volcanic ash in the sky? Misinterpreted as a mysterious planet

      • I also read it years ago. Well, you have to factor in the physics of how a foreign object behaves in relation to a closed gravitational system in a reasonable hypothesis. If I saw anything reasonable along those lines; I’ll entertain it. The point is, I haven’t seen one yet. I also disagree with Immanuel Velikovsky’s model of Venus as a marauding comet though there are many other aspects of his work I find intriguing.

I’ve read the book ‘Twelfth Planet’ by Sitchen also and the impression I got was thru his studies of the different Ancient cultures, it does appear to be something out there, but he lets the reader come to their own conclusion. He also mentions that if it were true about the Planet Nibiru, it probably wouldn’t approach earth until roughly 2037 or so. Very interesting read to say the least…

Alvin, i wanted to give you a heads up regarding the San Andreas Fault. I don’t think i saw it posted here. There are many articles that recently came out which talk about the latest data on the way the fault is structured. They are calling it propeller shaped and now realize that there is much more potential energy locked up in there. Actually, i should have sent you some of the links but you can easily find it.

I do appreciate your geologically oriented postings.

    Peace, rita

Brother Alvin, you’ve been dropping hints but I wonder if maybe I’ve figured out what you’re hinting at. A while back you posted a pic of the earth by reading the weight or density of the crust. There was a huge “knob” sticking out in the northern hemisphere, giving us an out of round shape to say the least. I think that this mass will settle to its natural position — bottom. Which would mean global shifting of every tectonic plate there is, and much fracturing of larger plates into smaller pieces as they work themselves into their new positions. I was kind of hurried here So I hope I was clear enough. Correct or incorrect in my theory? (LOL guess is more accurate)
