Large explosion seen on the Sun’s northeastern limb

April 17, 2012 SPACEMagnetic fields on the Sun’s northeastern limb erupted around 17:45 UT on April 16th, producing one of the most visually-spectacular explosions in years. NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) recorded the blast at extreme ultraviolet wavelengths. The explosion, which registered M1.7 on the Richter scale of solar flares, was not Earth-directed, but it did hurl a CME into space. Analysts at the Goddard Space Weather Lab have analyzed the trajectory of the cloud and found that it will hit NASA’s STEREO-B spacecraft, the Spitzer space telescope, and the rover Curiosity en route to Mars. Planets Venus and Mars could also receive a glancing blow. –Space Weather

Alvin, what could be the effects of this if it WAS directed towards Earth?

Despite the site that these picture of the sun erupting came from, these are nonetheless, awesome, (beautiful) pictures.

Alvin I hope you will not tire of people thanking you for putting this site together and sharing it with us.

Thank you and may the Lord bless and protect you.

    Hi Alvin,

What type of activity from the sun effects electrical instruments on earth? And is this one of those?
Keep up the great work and i have recommended this website to all of my friends for actual news around the world instead of who Katy Perry is kissing.

    • Sorry, for the delayed response, Conor. It would have to be fairly large geomagnetic storm or CME blast from the Sun to do the trick. There would also likely be a large coronal hole on the Earth-facing side of the Sun at the time. Typically flares in the upper X-class range, that are a direct blast to Earth accompanied by a vibrant solar wind gust from the coronal hole is the cause for concern. Thanks for reccomending the site and thanks for tuning in.

      Thanks

    Alvin,
Is it true that the sun will reach its solar maximum in the end of this year

Once the sun reaches the solar maximum, what will that effect be for our planet ?
    Thanks Alvin ?

A more active Sun generally but maximums are not always the worst for solar activity. The most powerful geomagnetic storm in recorded history occurred in the middle of Solar Cyle 10, about 7.5 years before the maximum, with the Carrington Event in 1859. A massive ball of energy as powerful as the Sun happens to also be incredibly unpredictable.

    Alvin,

thank you for this sight, been following you for a while now. i’m the one that posted about Hawaii having crazy weather beginning of march. just wondering, what apps do you recommend? i have the “Earthquake v3.1.2” apps since it links to the Tsunami website and i also have some “survival” apps…

thank you again for all you do,

Thank you Alvin, I live in Hawaii so we’re kind of in the “middle” of the Ring of Fire so I like to keep up to date. I’ve stopped watching “TV” in general since 1998 (with the acception of only watching X-Files until it ended May 2002) and only read what the news doesn’t report – that’s why i enjoy this site.

I appreciate all your hard work! many many thanks,

Tonic, The ACE device usually shows different readings to the others. Trust me on this, these readings are correct, but many dismiss ACE as faulty. It is my belief that another source is sending high energy particles towards our solar system. Be ready for this weekend when the moon will be at it’s biggest point. Big quakes etc are a very strong possibility.
