6.7 magnitude earthquake strikes Valparaiso, Chile

April 17, 2012CHILE A 6.7-magnitude earthquake struck 30 miles (48 kilometers) from the port city of Valparaiso in Chile on Tuesday morning, the U.S. Geological Survey said. No tsunami warning has been issued. The earthquake had a depth of 16.1 miles, the USGS said. The temblor was felt in the capital city, Santiago, located 69 miles from the epicenter. A CNN en Español anchor held onto his desk as the quake rattled the studio during a newscast in Huechurba, a suburb of the capital. “We could feel the ground shaking,” said journalist Richard Madan. “It felt like we were standing on a subway track but multiply that by about 200.” There were no immediate reports of major damage, but it was felt in the capital city, Santiago, located 69 miles from the epicenter. Chile is on the so-called “Ring of Fire,” an arc of volcanoes and fault lines circling the Pacific Basic that is prone to frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. –CNN

have noticed that the recently revamped USGS site no longer highlights in red those quakes of a higher magnitude. At the moment they would run out of ink!

It looks as though the ring is ramping up again
Would expect a big quake to strike today.

  3. Alvin… something is happening with the ‘underground’ news sites. They keep popping up as unavailable when i go to them; the most recent one is http://apparitionsourlady.blogspot.com/

It’s just amazing how many good sized earthquakes are happening lately. USGS is always the last site I check before I go to bed and the first site I check when I get home from work, only to find so many more earthquakes. Along with everything else, it’s getting more difficult to keep up. I don’t know how you do it Alvin, but I’m glad you keep up with all of this. I hope you know how appreciated you and all the others on here are.

I heard a theory that if the’ ring of fire’ is to erupt all together it will hault the rotation of earth for a very small time.
    Is this true ?

I don’t think a cessation of rotation is possible given the current mechanics of the way celestial bodies behave and are locked in orbit around the Sun. The earth or at least the people on it couldn’t survive the inertia of a cessation of angular rotation. It would sheer the surface of the planet to ruins. I think lurches in rotation are theoretical possible but it would have to involve a simultaneous core and surface disruption event on a very large scale.

Isn’t there a prophecy that for three days the Sun wouldn’t rise ? And we would be in darkness. That sounds as if the Earth has stopped rotating to me.
