M-6 flare blast: Another CME from Sun heading towards Earth

March 10, 2012SPACEAnother CME is heading for Earth: Sunspot AR1429 has unleashed another strong solar flare, an M6-class eruption on March 9th at 0358 UT. The blast hurled a coronal mass ejection (movie) almost directly toward Earth. According to analysts at the Goddard Space Weather Lab, the CME will arrive on March 11th at 0649 UT (+/- 7 hr) adding to the geomagnetic unrest already underway. –Space Weather

Not as heavy as an X level flare but it is starting to build up into a general active period that (I dare not say it) could knock out the grid for the millions NOT READY to go off grid.

I know nothing about how these events affect the earth. It does seem that having too much of anything can’t be good. I’d like to know more about why the sun does what it does and the corrilation effect on earth.

    *****EXTREME PROTON ALERT*****

EXTREME PROTON ENERGY PARTICLES ARE STRIKING MANY MAINLAND REGIONS GLOBALLY. NORTHERN & SOUTHERN HEMISPHERES RIGHT NOW. FURTHER EARTHQUAKES, VOLCANO ACTIVITY AND OTHER DISASTERS WILL BE GREATLY INFLUENCED BY THE INCREASED PROTON LEVELS.

That’s only about 99% of ther population. jk I know it’d be great to live off grid but it’s only a dream that can be reached by people who have money and can buy what they need to prepare and stock up.

the sun continues to unleash strong flares, another M8.4 earlier this afternoon was observed and it does appear another CME and subsequent geomagnetic storm of G3 is on it’s way.
    From spacewaether.com
Sunspot AR1429 is still erupting this weekend. On Saturday, March 10th, it produced a powerful M8-class flare that almost crossed the threshold into X-territory. In New Mexico, amateur radio astronomer Thomas Ashcraft recorded a series of shortwave bursts emanating from the blast site: audio. Also, the explosion propelled yet another CME toward Earth: forecast track. The cloud is expected to hit our planet’s magnetosphere on March 12th around 1800 UT. A CME from an earlier explosion will arrive much sooner, however. Continue reading…..

Seems we are starting to see more geophysical results as well from all these flares…. things are heating up…

    Take care

is the current sun activity related to the 11 year cycle? If so, is this cycle due to produce stronger flares than generally experienced?

    • I

During the solar maximum in 2013, solar activity is expected to see a notable uptick. There is always the possibility of flares when there is sunspot activity on the surface of the Sun and that’s what these 11 year cycles are about other that polarity reversals. I must add that sunspot behavior is unpredictable and the axiom of strong activity falling at the end of a cycle may not always hold true. The worst geomagnetic storm ever recorded was from the Carrington Event of 1859, but the flare that induced the storm erupted towards the beginning of the solar cycle not towards the end.

Solar Cycle 10: lasted 11.3 years, beginning in December 1855 and ended in March 1867, with the Carrington Flare happening in 1859.
