Residents searching for answers to intensifying mystery force shaking North Carolina coast

March 1, 2012 SOUTHPORT, NC Big booms and shaking were felt along the North Carolina coast Tuesday that have some people worried. Now, folks are booming with big bang theories on what they say causes the mysterious rocking and rolling along the coast. “Anything that can shake the houses, not just one or two houses, but a whole neighborhood and it can be heard from Southport to Bolivia and Sunset Harbor, it has to be something big,” said Bolivia resident Erick Myles. Folks across the Cape Fear say the mysterious booms are back and this time they seem stronger than ever. People say they had different experiences depending on where they were at the time. “It’s kind of freaky to me because I heard it but I didn’t see anything,” said Southport resident Jamie Hoffmann. “I didn’t hear the booms but I felt shaking twice,” said Boiling Spring Lakes resident Ruth Finley. Everyone we talked to said this was not the first time they have experienced the unknown sound and shaking. Some folks even say they hear the booms every week. One thing is for sure, people say they want answers. Seismologist say nothing registered on the Richter Scale Tuesday in our area and the military says it is not responsible for the sounds or shaking. Although scientists and authorities can’t seem to pinpoint where the noise is coming from, residents have their own theories. “I know that there’s an explanation and it has to be military,” Myles said. “The ocean,” said Hoffmann. “Something with the ocean.” Meanwhile, others said, “I think they’re earthquakes,” said Finley. “Tremors.”Some people we talked to said they were very concerned with the booms now that we’re nearing the end of the Mayan calendar which some people believe marks the end of the world. They say the confusion surrounding the booms only builds up their theory that we’re nearing the end of days. –Wway 3 News

Shake, Rattle, and Roll. Too many witnesses have experienced sounds and vibrations coming from this area to be false and I find that seismologist, military, and those in the physical science realm have little to no explanation at all.

Plate movement and or Orogeny ?

I work at night so I’m usually up late after 3 a.m. at times. I’m in Ma. and there have been several nights where my house just starts shaking, it’s very subtle but it’s there. It’s never on the news, never in the papers but it happens. A few years ago a plant blew up at around 2 am and I felt it enough that my desk chair moved and that was about 10-12 miles away so the cause doesn’t have to be from my town but it’s unnerving!

Scientists seem to always have an answer, except when it comes to things like this! Hmmm???

I live about 90 miles or so from the coast and in the past 60 days there has been at least three
“boom” like noises. Last saturday, I thought an object had struck my roof that I actually, went
up into the attic to see. There was a prior “boom” noise so loud that I went to the window expecting to see smoke and hear the sound of emergency response.
These two events I experienced. There was a prior one and the local paper reported it
because many local residents called 911.

Also, there is much military air traffic in my area.
    .
Ponder this: It has been reported on this site that the atlantic seabed floor is spreading. I ponder if these reports of shaking, boom noises, are a result of that.I am speaking about creating stress
in these areas? Just a thought…………….

If this phenomena is not mechanically produced; it’s very likely that the rate of sea-floor spreading is intensifying along the Atlantic sea-bed at the MAR. The would put additional pressure on the thrust of the North American plate westward, which would create convergent pressures along the U.S. West and NW coast, where it borders the Pacific and Juan de Fuca plates. We have been seeing a lot of seismic quakes in the last two weeks along the western region of the U.S. and California, as well as increased seismicity at El Hierro, which falls on the other side of the Mid-Atlantic Rift. We can also expect heightened activity from Hawaii’s magma plume in the Pacific consequently also, if this is what’s occurring.

That may explain the big boom heard here in the southern end of Tacoma,Wa yesterday morning. It sounded and felt like something slammed against my house and I too went outside expecting to see smoke or an emergency response. My Mom called and she also heard it and she lives over 4 miles away. It also brought out all my neighbors. Nothing on the news or online and that hour of seismic data is missing from all the webicorders for the Tacoma area.

Don’t know if it means anything but the other day I walked into my kitchen and on the counter were two glasses touching and they were chattering against each other and it was not me walking on the floor causeing it to happen becaue my foundation is a concrete slab with tile. I live in South West Texas.

These did indeed happen Tuesday… I will say that the military has become active once again at the bombing ranges in the Pamlico Sounds according to a local news story a few months back. That being said, this is something else entirely as it was too close to be bombing practice and it was not a *sonic boom*. Either nature or man-made, time will tell…

    Alvin,
What do you think? What could be causing this when the article clearly stated it wasn’t an earthquake and the military said they were not responsible for it? Something inside the earth?

If it isn’t earthquakes and nothing can be seen, my theory is ‘sonic’ booms. I used to live near a big airbase here in Canada and experienced it twice when the air force flew over the Great Lake of Ontario beyond the speed of sound. Now, I am not familiar with this area of the U.S.A. but I know that these “booms” are powerful enough to shake entire neighbourhoods.

    Bob, from Canada.

Wasn’t it just a week or so ago that they were doing military ops on the beaches of this area. On top of that all those whale beachings…it’s the things that make you go hmmm :/

There is also a Nuclear Power Plant near SouthPort and I think they shut down Unit 1 last Thursday because of problems and they might even of shut down Unit 2. But do you think it could be linked to that? My family live a few minutes from Southport and they heard the loud booms and even two days later again. 😦

Insofar as I am concerned, Nostradamus, the Mayan prophesies etc. etc.are all part of the
Dark Matrix scenario and HAARP; CERN plus can cause very weird things to happen. They are trying to emulate the “end of days” as has been “predicted” . We must open our minds to all this and not fall into their trap!

In the past 30 or so days, it is true that there has been a major military exercise off the coast of North Carolina. There has been an increase in military air traffic in the area and where I live, it is a common occurrence for Air Force Combat Aircraft conduct touch ‘n’ go exercises.

I have heard a sonic boom from a jet aircraft, as many of you have and these boom type noises that we are talking about are different. To me, it is more of an explosive type noise with a loud echo.
After a sonic boom from a jet, you can still hear the increased sound of the jet engine.
I am inclined to believe these noises being reported could come from extreme pressure
being applied somewhere, a geological matter
    That is what I think…………….

Dennis is correct… I used to live near Oceania naval base in Virginia Beach, now back in eastern NC on the Pamlico. These booms and vibrations are definitely not mechanical in nature. I’ve had touch n go(s) tear stuff off my walls in Va Beach. Experienced several sonic booms throughout my life as the Navy used this area thirty years ago for training at top speeds. These booms are coming from the ground up. So, as the govt is retiring big weapons from their arsenal per stories several months back, one has to ask, what they are potentially replacing them with and is this the issue… otherwise, it is coming from the Earth itself.

Yes, agree they are different, I live right next to Joint base Lewis Mcchord and I am very close to the runways. They have also increased military excersises here too in the last few weeks. I’ve Lived here for 37 years and I know what a sonic boom sounds like. I dont think what I heard/felt yesterday was a sonic boom. Possibly new weapons testing?

Several years ago, we heard a huge boom early in the morning, our house was shaking like crazy. I thought someone had actually run into our house. We couldn’t find anything, but just hours later found out that the space shuttle had exploded.

In Jan this year there were reports of strange noises. Some of there may have been ‘Seneca guns’ unusual booms that maybe caused by shallow earthquakes (USGS ref.). Mayb these were similar. Are there any recordings of the actual booms?

I think it is the earth and the rocks moving causing strange noises all over the earth – thats why we’re getting reports from other places not just the USA. Light can also come from these rocks rubbing – there have been reports of that as well. We need to wake up and consider that something is not right and maybe just maybe the Myan’s
