Deaths in Ukraine and Poland reported to freezing European weather

January 31, 2012EUROPEAt least 58 people have died in Ukraine and 10 in Poland after heavy snow fall and a drop in temperatures across much of central and Eastern Europe. Three deaths were also reported in Serbia and one in Bulgaria. Ukrainian health officials said more than 600 people had sought treatment for frostbite and hypothermia in just three days. And over that time, nearly 24,000 people sought refuge in some 1,590 shelters, the officials say. Temperatures have plunged to -16C (3F) during the day and -23C (-10F) at night. Many of the dead were homeless people, whose bodies were discovered on the streets, Ukraine’s Emergency Situations Ministry said. Poland had been having a relatively mild winter, until temperatures dropped last Friday from just below freezing to -26C (-15F). Malgorzata Wozniak of Poland’s interior ministry told the Associated Press that elderly people and the homeless were among the dead. Polish forecasters have warned that temperatures could fall further during the week, to below -20C during the day and -30C at night. In Serbia, police reported that the snowy conditions had led to the deaths of a woman and two elderly men. Two other men, in their 70s, are believed to be missing in the south of the country. The freezing conditions also claimed a life in neighboring Bulgaria. Emergency shelters offering food and heat are being set up in the Bulgarian capital Sofia and the Czech capital Prague, reports say. –BBC

Also in Romania there are 4 deaths related to this freezing weather. This week we’re all under a “code orange” warning for severe weather, severe as in less than -20F, accompanied by snow and blizzards. Sounds like fun, right? 🙂

Hello Alvin, indeed very bad weather as you mention. We in the UK are familiar with it at present.I write to remind you and UK readers that is exactly 59 years since the severe storm surge that prevailed on that dreadful night of 31st of January 1953.A double depression over Scotland,A high tide on top of the spring tide. The funneling effect in the North Sea caused major inundation on the East Coast and The Coast of Holland causing many deaths. When we are in our cosy beds tonite maybe we should spare a thought for those that perished…even if it was 59 years ago.

We’ve been having a very mile winter here in Ohio. It was in the upper 50’s today – in January – and it’s suppose to be in the 40’s the rest of the week. What worries me is that, the hard winter will come fast and furious after we get used to this warm weather.

-29C in some places in Bulgaria, two days of temp. records for many places. Never before seen siberian cold weather. Does indeed the north pole is shifting towards siberia, thus bringing ice age to eastern and central europe?

The lack of the gulf stream is allowing the cold air to come down from the artic and go unabated.
The mild weather here in mushagain may be dangerous to fruit trees if they start budding early and then get crushed with freezing cold weather. Most people just pass it off as normal. Nothing feels normal to me anymore.
