Mysterious rumbling creates cloud of fear across Vancouver Island

January 26, 2012VICTORIAIn the last 48 hours a number of people in Sooke have reported feeling powerful tremors that some believe are an earthquake. “I heard what sounded like a freight train coming, that rumble, and it was very brief. My bed actually shifted,” one Sooke homeowner told CTV News. Seismologists say there are no indications of an earthquake in the Sooke area and all calling the recent reports a mystery. On Wednesday several employees downtown felt similar shaking but believed it was a result of blasting at a downtown construction site. Alison Bird with the Pacific Geo Science Centre says, “It would have to be an extremely large explosion for people in Sooke to feel the Victoria blast.” The District of Sooke, the Sooke Fire Department, and the RCMP were all contacted but were unable to shed any light on the rumblings. The Department of National Defense also denied have any part in the tremors. South of the border the Whidbey Island Naval Air Station says they didn’t have any aircrafts operating Tuesday because of high winds. –CTV Vancouver Island

  1. Being in such close proximity to the Cascadian Subduction Zone, one has to wonder. I would be curious if such unusual events preceded the recent quake in Japan. I am not a geologist, (thus this would be conjecture), but I would think that seismic waves could have a very narrow bandwidth constrained to particular areas depending upon the type of subterranean rock in that area. Regardless…very wierd!

It would be interesting to see a map with the location of all these strange sounds marked. What with all the earthquakes happening down around the south pole/antarctica maybe there is a correlation of some kind in the northern hemisphere with all the strange sounds. A quake on one side of the earth “echoed” by sounds on the opposite side, maybe?? If we could see where they are happening, possibly a pattern would emerge.

One thing not reported, but across the Straight in Vancouver it was reported by many that they heard a strange harmonic noise around the same time, but no shaking..

    • like most of the other occurences of these strange sounds, a earthquake will most likely strike within a week or two. also solar and lunar activity may have resulted in this or recent geological…upsets

    fracking perhaps?

  5. Vancouver island is a part of a massive rifting zone, and these tremors, if they are at 40 megahertz, could be harmonic tremors associated with the movement of magma.

WE are entereing into a season of EARTH COMPACTION. a beginning of greater shifts and rumblings to come. EARTH COMPACTION is the collapsing of the crust of the earth onto itself. There are more sinkholes appearing. One recently swallowed a whole stripmall in a southern state. caacks appearing spontaneously nationwide in the earth….
This is just an additional thought. remember the scientic principle, forevery action there is an eqauland opposite reaction….may be more shake and bakes on the way…
