A new model for disaster recovery? China erects 30-storey earthquake-proof building in 15 days

January 11, 2012BEIJINGA development firm in China has erected a 30-storey hotel in just 15 days, or 360 hours. The developer, Broad Group, came under the global spotlight last year when it built a 16-storey residential block in China in just five days. And their latest project, which is located in the south-central Chinese city of Changsha is no less impressive. The ‘flat pack’ skyscraper was 90% pre-constructed in factories and then put together onsite. It uses one-sixth the materials of a comparable facility and is also an extremely energy-efficient building, combining thermal insulation, triple pane windows, external solar shading, fresh air heat recovery, and LED lighting. It is also earthquake-proof and is said to be able to withstand tremors of up to 9.0. Having perfected their novel approach to construction the company now aims to build another 150 30-storey apartment buildings, hotels and offices in the same manner. It is hoped that the ability to build property so quickly will revolutionize areas where property is in short supply. The company believes that their approach could be used to quickly construct environmentally-friendly homes in over populated urban areas and could also be used in disaster relief to construct new buildings quickly and efficiently. No doubt some British builders could take a leaf out of Broad’s book. –A Place in the Sun

Impressive, I’m still glad I’m too poor to ever test it in earthquake situations tho’, that tower still wobbled when it shook;-) Yup, you guessed it, I’m a wimp!

Actually, the building looks very nice. I am impressed.

My daughter was living in a high-rise apartment, on the 17th floor, when extremely high winds came through. She could feel the whole building swaying. She now lives in a two-story house.

It’s all very fine and dandy but Humans will have to think seriously about overpopulation being the major cause of all of our problems. The world’s population will double and triple very rapidly unless the insanely uncontrolled procreation of children is stopped very soon. Undeniably, all social, political, economic, natural, environmental, climatic and ecological problems on the Earth can be traced back to the population explosion, respectively overpopulation. From the population explosion to the collapse of the ecology, and the immediate future of our planet Earth.

It might be hard for some to comprehend but it is nevertheless the truth.

Population Explosion ?No such thing. Fact is population in on the decrease in Europe anyway. Pensions payments have being revised to be paid on a later date up to 3 years or more in some countries

“Earthquake proof” reminds me of “The ship that God couldn’t sink” (Titanic). Of course, Good Luck, the Tower of Babel is an excellent reference also.

  5. Actually China didn’t invent this product. It was first made in the late 70s by an engineer with the last name of Haddock. He chose not to allow the product out of his control–thereby you will not find it in Lowe’s, Home Depot, etc.

You can buy direct from one of the two manufacturing places in the U.S.A. Internet search for Therma-Save. When a two story house was built for seismic testing–It broke the federal seismagraph at 9.2.

It’s great stuff and it goes up fast. Can also be used for roofing and ground floor.

This is fine and dandy…but what about the tsunami…and the location???Rebuildiing in the same area will not prevent the tsunami. I wonder about the footprint of this material. If a tsunami wipes out this building will it end up in the ocean and destroy our ecosystem? I also agree with the above…Tower of Babel – Pride. Before a fall comes Pride.

Well it looks to be impressive, however…a 30 story building in 15 days, from a country that “accidently” contanimates their formula, uses lead on toys, produces unsafe bike helmets, and now they want the population to believe this building is SAFE. You can promote all you want to, but can they really prove a 30 story building built in 15 days is safe.
