Thousands of birds crash into Walmart parking lot but wildlife expert’s explanation for the event makes even less sense

December 14, 2011UTAHThousands of migratory birds died on impact after apparently mistaking a Wal-Mart parking lot and other areas of southern Utah for bodies of water and plummeting to the ground in what one wildlife expert called the worst downing she’s ever seen. Crews went to work cleaning up the dead birds and rescuing the survivors after the creatures crash-landed in the St. George area Monday night. By Tuesday evening, volunteers had rescued more than 2,000 birds, releasing them into nearby bodies of water. “They’re just everywhere,” said Teresa Griffin, wildlife program manager for the Utah Department of Wildlife Resource’s southern region. “It’s been nonstop. All our employees are driving around picking them up, and we’ve got so many people coming to our office and dropping them off.” Officials say stormy conditions probably confused the flock of grebes, a duck-like aquatic bird likely making its way to Mexico for the winter. The birds tried to land in a Cedar City Wal-Mart parking lot and elsewhere. “The storm clouds over the top of the city lights made it look like a nice, flat body of water. All the conditions were right,” Griffin told The Spectrum newspaper in St. George. “So the birds landed to rest, but ended up slamming into the pavement. No human injuries or property damage have been reported. Griffin noted most downings are localized “but this was very widespread. I’ve been here 15 years and this was the worst downing I’ve seen,” she told the newspaper. Officials said they were continuing the rescue effort that started Tuesday afternoon and included an enthusiastic group of volunteers. The surviving grebes were released into bodies of water in southern Utah’s Washington County, including a pond near Hurricane. –Bellingham Herald

Birds are dying fish are dying…Why Magnetic pole shift.

The explanation given, that the birds mistook the parking lot for a lake, is consistent with what I’ve read about similar situations here in the Pacific Northwest. Birds sometimes mistake flat stretches of highway for lakes, when a heavy rain has left standing water. When it happens up here, though, it’s usually just one bird.

Them sure are some real dumb birds. I think the experts may be more confused than the birds. Unbelievable the explanations we get for these odd animal behaviors. I guess it is too cold to blame it on fireworks.

  4. why do they write such stuff and treat us all like idiots? Homing pigeons fly and return using inbuilt magnetic compass….. stories abound that airports have had to change runway numbers because of earth changes etc…… poor birds!

poor bird poor bees poor us……We have no one to blame but the fact we were born for this reality we now live in…When in India back in 1978 with my teacher i was given a vision of the future. It has forever haunted me. All I saw was a distant time when the whole world was in panic.

dont most animals navigate by our magnetosphere. If it’s out of whack, which i believe it is, that may explain what is happening to our planet’s wildlife including the oceanic life.

Poor Birds! Shifts in the earth or the wobble may be worse than we know with things like this occuring. Birds have no reason not to tell the truth by their instincts…seriously!!!

Well, there is one college football team (sorry, can’t remember which one) that uses a blue playing field instead of the traditional green field. They have to cover it up when it’s not in use because birds crash into it thinking it’s water. However, it was never thousands of birds. There is definitely something going on that they’re not tell us, quite probably the magnetic pole shift. So sad.

That’s Boise State, and I don’t recall that has ever been much of a problem, or I would of heard about it, I live in Boise. Also, they don’t cover it up very often that I’ve heard about.

Seriously, if birds are going to land in water, they glide in, as anyone can witness when birds approach on water, a dive bombing flock…dont think so.

I didnt mean to leave a poem. Im dead serious that we are in a place where the birds fish and insects who all move thanks to magnetism have lost their way. The 1& who are their own be all of their existence have totally lost their way except for their pathetic survival,, They live in denial. The solar sytem we live in has also lost its way…Think within a very short time the unthinkable may happen….

Unless the shifting magnetism causes gravity to become 100 times stronger, I still don’t see why they would willing plummet to their death? Lost yes, kamikaze no.

Any thoughts on the location of this event? Not that it’s at Walmart 🙂 but Utah’s proximity to Yellowstone. We’ve had birds and fish dying in Arkansas not too far from the New Madrid fault and we all remember the dead fish in California and we all know how fault ridden that state is.

Weird that bird deaths were highlighted at the beginning of 2011, and now again at it’s end. During the year numerous whales got lost, beached, and died. Countless fish deaths around the world. Yet still, no scientist will step forward and declare that our magnetic field is in serious trouble.
Birds were rulers of the skies long before our high tech flying machines, (the know what a parking lot is) and whales are still kings of the oceans, despite our best efforts to rule the seas. The incredible journeys that some of these creatures undertake during their lifetime has got nothing to do with sight. They just cannot rely on their compass any more.
So we will gather a few, and do an autopsy and say “this might be what happened”
Why not just say “Thank you for this sign, and forgive us for disconnecting from the amazing world you live in.”

  17. I live in Utah, but in the Salt Lake Valley which is about 200-250 miles north of where this happened. Snow and ice is not unusual for southern Utah, so I don’t buy this article for one moment.

Alvin, you know that I emailed you a few weeks back regarding “magnetic anomalies” that I have been witnessing here. Well last week (also at work) as I was leaving work for the day, I had pulled my car about of the parking slot and turned my wheel to move forward. At that moment, my car was pointed in what has ALWAYS been a “south eastern” direction. But my compass was showing this direction as “north east”. I circled my building, watching my compass switch directions as I circled. I came back to the location where I began and it was still showing “north east” when it most definitely should have been showing “south east”.

I don’t know what to make of this, but things are DEFINITELY NOT right!

    Hi all,
Grebes which these are the species of these unfortunate birds belong to the order podicipediformes. they are swimming and diving birds mostly small fish, snail and aquatic worm eaters. I have seen them often when I fished and they fished- so I guess we fished together. They are beautiful creations and are well known for their courtship dances in which they run as a pair across the top of lakes and ponds.
In my local they are good ecosystem barometers because toxins can build up quickly in their bodies. Their migration path must have crossed the great salt lake- I am suspicious that maybe there was a spill, algae bloom or maybe their internal gyros were off balance because of disrupted magnetic fields. Any rate we will probably never know for sure. All is just speculation.
As I write this there is a larger catastrophe playing out in the arctic- thousands of ringed seals are dead and dying on both the Asian and North American continents. They think it is disease but are unsure and it is an unknown. The threat level is extremely high because ringed seals are such a large part of the food web, even for human subsistence in that climate life is almost dependent on their contribution.

    Peace
    Jeff

    • Birds that fish dive do, hence the evolution of higher order eye-sight. Most birds usually try to settle in before the onset of darkness or the approach of bad weather. This story makes absolutely no sense at all. Then again, in a reversed world…I’m sure if birds saw 1000 humans frogmarching to jump off a cliff, I should they would think that humans are not all that smart either.
