6.6 magnitude earthquake strikes Beni region of Bolivia

November 22, 2011SANTA CRUZ A deep 6.6 magnitude earthquake struck Beni, just north of the mountainous region of eastern Bolivia. The depth of the earthquake was more than 533 km (331 miles) below the surface. The earthquake was so deep in fact- that USGS initially recorded readings from seismometers showing the quake had a 6.9 magnitude intensity. The earthquake occurred deep in the planet’s mantle and was about 500 km northeast of Uturuncu, the site of a mysterious super magmatic ground inflation. The earthquake’s epicenter was 60 km (37 miles) SSW of Trinidad, Bolivia and 342 km (212 miles) NW of Santa Cruz, Bolivia. There were no reports of damages from today’s earthquake. –The Extinction Protocol

Yellowstone National Park is listed on USGS as having a small 3.0…does anyone remember ever seeing Yellowstone listed before on the USGS?

I have seen Yellowstone listed on the USGS site before, however it has been awhile. This one 3.0 I don’t believe is anything to be concerned about.

A little bit of more recent history concerning Yellowstone earthquakes. I remember the one that hit in 1959. It was registered somewhere between 7.3 – 7.5 in magnitude. There were several aftershocks that ranged from 5.8 to 6.3. That quake caused a lot of damage.

So, unless we start hearing more about the movement of magma. Personally, I’m more concerned with the New Madrid fault rupturing than I am about Yellowstone. That being said, I do keep an eye out on Yellowstone – just in case. 😉

The tremors were felt all the way to the Pacific coasts of Chile.
It was thought that earthquakes never were to touch Bolivia.

    • I just spoke with a group who felt the shaking even in Brazil. The USGS upgraded the quake magnitude from 6.9 to 6.7 to 6.2 back to 6.6. It threw seismometers in total disarray.

      Is that so ?

If that is the case, then I suppose there could be surprises, in other “geologically stable” areas as well. ( such as the American Great Plains )
