50,000 feral pigs overrun U.S.-Mexican border

November 22, 2011MEXICO CITYMexican officials have unveiled plans to slaughter some 50,000 wild boars that have crossed the border from the United States and now threaten agriculture in Mexico. The Ministry of Environment in Chihauha state said some 1,500 hectares (3,700 acres) of farmland in the border town of Ojinaga have been affected by the large number of feral pigs that have come from Presidio County, Texas. “We must get rid of these European wild boars because they sleep overnight on US soil during the day and cross over to the Mexican side to feed,” Ignacio Legarreta, a state official, told local media. The boars of European origin, which were imported to Texas as pets and then replicated in the wild, have caused serious damage to the flora and fauna of the area, officials said. “They have reproduced to reach more than 50,000 animals that threaten the area,” said Legarreta. The authorities intend to use cages with food inside to trap the animals. –AFP

That will be a lot of sausage.

  2. T2 says:

it will also be an act against mother nature that won’t serve man very well.

  3. dharma2012 says:

I’m pretty sure the U.S. has been overrun by more than 50,000 illegal immigrants. So, they’re just going to shoot them instead of rounding them up and sending them back?

  4. Luciano says:

Time for an open hunting season to keep the feral pigs in check along with the traps.

  5. Darryl says:

Why can’t you just move them to a place away from farmland, it’s just as much their world as it is ours. Maybe it’s us over populating the place, not them. Soon their be no wild land for wildlife to feed on. What then? kill all the animals on Human land?

  6. callyrox says:

Fking cruelty, Pigs are super smart… Even if they are feral, This is just like the Incident that led to all those exotic animals being Shot dead, There are better solutions, Why dose man have to assume they Rule The planet….

    A Quote from Solarham.

A possible filament eruption in the northwest quadrant on Sunday generated a slow moving Coronal Mass Ejection. In the initial STEREO Ahead COR2 movie below, it appeared to have an Earth directed component, however when watching the new Lasco C2 movie it looks to be directed away from Earth.

I know this is probably serious, but I’m glad I’m not the only one who finds this humorous. We get their illegals and they get our pigs.

  10. nanoduck says:

I think we will be needing them soon as the economy crash….hunting and gathering may soon be the only way to survive (if you don’t count stealing, looting, and cannibalism). Those feral pig meat is way better than farm pig…no antibiotics and more leaner.

    • K.J. says:

I am afraid I would have to disagree……….. an actual farm pig, as in a pig from a real farm, is excellent meat. Do not confuse the commercial pork most stores carry that is produced in the massive corporate hog barns with hogs raised on an old time family farm. I know I am splitting hairs nanoduck, but as a livestock producer who takes good care of my animals and who believes they deserve a good life out in the sun and fresh air, free from unnecessary drugs, hormones and frankenstein feed products……….. I take exception to real farms getting lumped in with the massive intensive livestock operations. Nothing deserves to live like that……….. man nor beast.

As for the wild feral hogs, they are all across the southern states from Florida to the Pacific coast. You will never get rid of them. They are hunted all year round in many areas and in most places you can shoot as many as you want, but it is hard to make a dent in them. Hogs are smart and combined with multiple land use issues, they will never get rid of them unless the resort to draconian or politically unacceptable methods. What would need to be done to truly eradicate feral hogs would adversely affect some native wildlife species and so, would never be allowed.

Nope, feral hog hunting will be around for those who want it for many years to come.

Apart from the piglets, eating the mature wild pig is not advisable, I believe they are infested with intestinal worm and all sorts of nasties (in Aust), not good.
Sorry to be a boar.. 🙂

I think This is a sign of a Climate change, their just trying to find warmer weather, guess things are getting serious.

  12. barbara bartlett says:

Can there really be 50,000 pigs running together acrossed the border and back? Do they know it is illegal to cross the border? Thats a lot of PIG… Is there a sign? Is it both Spanish and English? Can I shoot one with a “fast and furious” gun? If you think about this story, there are a million questions. Will we ever see a follow-up?

  13. It’s the amount of comments we receieve, not their content that is at issue. There is not enough hours in a day to get to all of them – thus the system is regularly purged.

The “Hawg” problem is so prolific that there are some making money off of it through some reality TV shows like:
    American Hoggers – http://www.aetv.com/american-hoggers/
    Hogs Wild – http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1785935/
