5.7 magnitude earthquake rattles coast of Ecuador

November 17, 2011 – Ecuador – A 5.7 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Ecuador at 1:57 UTC.  The depth of the earthquake was 29.8 km (18.5 miles) SW of Manta and 380 km (236 miles) WSW of the capital QUITO, Ecuador. At the end of October, a 4.0 magnitude earthquake near Quito caused landslides and left cracks in some homes. Buildings were shaken but there have been no reports yet issued of damages. Ecuador sits in the Nazca tectonic plate which creates adjacent stress with the neighboring Caribbean Plate. –The Extinction Protocol

    Um saw this a few hours ago. But how can you “predict” an earthquake that is happening tomorrow? Hello it’s still the 16th of November and I think that country matches the United States Pacific or Mountain Time zone where FYI it’s still November the 16th. Hmm. Seems a bit “premature” to me to be saying an earthquake hit this nation on the 17th. When it’s not true.

    Is this an unusual place for an earthquake to occur? My interest in earthquakes peaked recently when I felt my first one in Kansas, USA! It was an aftershock from a 5.6 earthquake in Oklahoma a few months ago. I am usually opposed to any end of the world theories, but feeling an earthquake in Kansas is so unexpected it leads to all kinds of thoughts. In the past few years earthquakes have devastated Haiti and Japan, and now coming to midwest USA. Is this normal? I don’t remember thinking of earthquakes besides being in Californa for most of my life.

      I think that many of us in the U.S. grew up thinking that California was the most likely place for a major earthquake. Although CA is currently “overdue” for the big one, the one place I have been watching carefully for any activity is the New Madrid area. There are some geologists who seem to be more concerned about that area than California, because it would be much more devasting. The last big quake they had in 1811–1812, shook the White House, rang church bells in Boston, and cause the Mississippi to flow backwards. Buildings there are not constructed to withstand an earthquake. These people are more concerned about tornadoes. I live in Ohio, so if the New Madrid goes, I’m going to feel it.

      Here is some recent activity along the New Madrid. Although it isn’t significant, I’ve been watching it.

      MAG 1.3 2011/11/12 DEPTH 7.7 7 km – (4 mi) ESE of Marston, MO
      MAG 1.7 2011/11/12 DEPTH 5.7 3 km – (2 mi) W of Blytheville, AR
      MAG 2.0 2011/11/10 DEPTH 10.4 8 km – (5 mi) S of Manila, AR

      However, with all the Earth Changes that are happening, all bets are off as to where the next “big one” will happen.

        Ronni – good guess. Yes I’m in Mansfield. Born and raised here. This is right where the radar splits during the summer storms and gets dumped on from snow storms coming from the south. This was always a nice city to live in, unfortunately, it’s dying now.

        I am in Huber Heights (Dayton). I was born in Norwalk, Oh., grew up in Cleveland Heights, and have or did have relatives in Mansfield, Monroeville, and Norwalk. My grandpa started a Y-Not Schwinn bike shop in Mansfield that my uncle and cousin have taken over. Pa’s last name was Stieber, my uncle and cousin are Petersens.
