Large sunspot group turning Earthward

November 3, 2011MAGNIFICENT SUNSPOT: One of the largest sunspots in years is rotating over the sun’s northeastern limb. NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory took this picture of AR1339 during the early hours of Nov. 3rd: Measuring some 40,000 km wide and at least twice that in length, the sprawling sunspot group is an easy target for backyard solar telescopes. Two or three of the sunspot’s dark cores are wider than Earth itself. Naturally, such a large sunspot has potential for strong flares. NOAA forecasters estimate a 50% chance of M-class solar flares during the next 24 hours. One such eruption has already occurred: An M4-flare at 2200 UT on Nov. 2nd produced a bright flash of extreme UV radiation and hurled a coronal mass ejection (CME) into space. The CME is not heading our way. Future CMEs could have greater effect as AR1339 turns toward Earth in the days ahead. –Space Weather

Already had a x2 flare today. This spot should be earth facing in the next couple of days. I love your site btw. This is my first comment woo hoo !!

  2. GeorgeF. says:

According to SpaceWeather web (quote): ” X-FLARE: Earth-orbiting satellites have just detected an X2-class solar flare. The source is huge sunspot AR1339, described below. Stay tuned for updates.”

BTW Alwin, what happened to the mobile version of your site? Did you changed the layout and graphics? To be honest I liked the old one much more as it was much easier to navigate and see comments…

  3. SamanthaH says:

Thats bigger than the 1302 a couple of weeks ago! Oh my goodness my jaw just dropped to my knees!

  4. James Herlihy says:

When is this expected to be facing EARTH ????

  5. Susan says:

Aggressive list of flare activity in the last two days from sunspot 1339… 18-C flares, 2-M class flares and 1-X class flare

Seven days from today is 11/11, i don’t like this but there really is nothing anyone of can do.

A direct hit now, is all that we need, huh ??

BUT, considering all the unrest in the Mideast and the potential for open warfare, perhaps a ‘direct hit’ would be His way, of putting a ‘damper’ on things….. and saving us from ourselves.

  8. Val says:

It will be facing us just in time for our 1st nationwide alert ?? Coincidence? Do “they” know what is coming?

  9. Debra says:

My intuition says it is not a coincidence… 2 days b4 11.11.11? I had a moving sale yesterday and for some reason a large group of people ended up just chatting. I asked if they were aware of the “test” and not one person knew about it. I find the fact that some tv’s won’t be broadcasting that this is a test will cause a lot of panic. I’m sure many will b on their cell phones looking for answers & that may cause it’s own problems.

Thanks Alvin for all you do. Debra
