Airborne volcanic fragments expelled from the sea off El Hierro

October 15, 2011MADRIDSpanish authorities say activity by an underwater volcano has led them to close access to a port on El Hierro Island. Ships have been ordered away from waters around La Restinga and aircraft have been banned from flying over the island’s southern tip. The port’s 600 residents were evacuated Tuesday after volcanic activity began. The regional government of the Canary Islands says scientists have detected airborne volcanic fragments called pyroclasts rising from the sea off La Restinga. The government said it awaited scientific reports on the danger posed by pyroclasts, but a research vessel that was collecting samples there has been ordered to desist. TV channel La Sexta reported Saturday that journalists also have been told to clear the area.CBS

Sometimes I think I should take a vacation from reading your website. It’s becoming too much for my nerves. What if I am not one of the lucky ones to survive? No offense, Alvin. It’s a great website.

    • None taken and when it gets too intense…step away to catch your breath. This is a lot for people to handle. Not surviving is probably one of the least things I worry about…I think I’m concerned more about living through such a harsh realm. Seeing some of the effects on other people. I think our destines will all play out in this drama just as it was meant to and those meant to be here will be and those meant to assist, comfort and help others prepare for the crisis ahead will do so and may pass. Whatever role life and God has for it…we will learn to come to peace with it. Just making yourself known to us even by writing in and letting us know that there are people out there feeling what you feel is a comfort and reason to smile. Keep the light burning..

      peace and blessings,

It’s funny, reading this info should tell people to enjoy everyday even more and not waiting for doing things later. I don’t care, I’m already a LUCKY ONE because those sites open my eyes and told me to enjoy every moments of my life RIGHT NOW. When I go biking or hiking I don’t take nature for granted, I look at it like it would be the last day I’m seeing it. When I spend time with my daughter and friends it’s more precious than before, I think this is great, everybody should live their life like there’s no tomorrow.

    Current volcanic Canary Islands (AVCAN)
IGN-CSIC scientists claim that the evolution of the volcanic eruption may have four phases

15-10-2011… 20: 28 – Ministry of economy, finance and security

The culmination of all of them will depend on the amount of magma expelled

Scientists from the National Geographic Institute (IGN) and Centro Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), have confirmed, in the afternoon today, that the eruptive process of El Hierro is a rash type surtseyana, composed of four phases. However, they pointed out that the culmination of these will depend on the amount of magma expelled by the volcano.

Explained the Coordinator of the team of scientists from the CSIC, Ramón Ortiz, the first phase, whose effects have seen today, is the expulsion of “bubbles of lava which gas and that a time they lose sink”. In a second stage, according to Ortiz, “you can see a column of white steam” which will give step to the third stage which will be observed “a few explosions of black colour known as Rooster tails”. Finally, “the growth of a small island which will flow a lava fountain dispenser type” can view.

Ramón Ortiz also assure that the diameter of the mouth of the volcano should be of approximately a meter in diameter and this has caused a strain on the island about five centimeters. He also said that the eruption will be visible when you are 60 meters of depth.

It will be recalled, the Canarian Government raised this morning the emergency situation at red traffic lights, level 1, which, in addition to mandatory evacuations, mobilize the necessary means for intervention and logistics activities. Thus the direction of the PEVOLCA has transmitted it to the population of La Restinga, which must carefully follow the recommendations of the authorities and members of civil protection.

For its part, the director-general of security and emergency, Juan Manuel Santana, announced that tomorrow will be held a new meeting of the Steering Committee of the PEVOLCA, which will assist the President of the Government, Paulino Rivero, and the director of the Plan and Councillor of Economics, finance and security, Javier Ortiz. The meeting will take place, at 13: 00, in the Town Hall of El Pinar.

Ynot’s wife – being aware is empowerment in itself; being fearful is not.

People need to learn the basics of how to survive, how to grow their own food and find their own food. How to purify their water. Now, not later. Later is too late. Anything could happen – and it probably won’t be what we expect either. Or when.

Pray for the ones who survive – because their journey will probably be the hardest one of all…….

And no matter what – be happy and have faith.

  16. Once again, excellent post and excellent comments. I also have to step away from the computer at times when I feel like I’m having an “information overload” day. Once I have digested all of the information, I am able to come back for more.

I do not live in fear, although there are times I am unnerved. But I would much rather be informed than have a disaster come upon me that I didn’t know was coming. I just put my faith and my life in my Lord Jesus’ hands.

Update 16/10 – 10:44 UTC : Villagers are mentioning “bubbles” coming up in the spotted area in the sea. We expect to receive fastly images from the bubbles as the many camera teams with their superior equipment will certainly be able to shoot detailed video from an event which can be seen by the naked eye.
Ramon Ortiz, a technician from the CSIC (Centro Superior de Investigaciones Científicas) is predicting that a new island is being formed at this moment and that the chance that it will happen now is evaluated as very probable, at least of the eruption process will continue a little longer.

According to the AVCAN, the bubble rising from the eruption spot after the “smoking balloons of lava”, corresponds to the second phase of a typical Surtseyan eruption. Next step, will be a white plume, then, the so called “rooster tales”. Last of all, the birth of a new island.
What intrigues me most is when they say the “mouth” of the volcano is no larger than 1,5 m!

Call me crazy, but I think it’s rather fascinating that a new island is being born. When you think about it, all the land we live on was created in some fashion too. Like everyone else, I am concerned about the impact this will have on all of us. Yet, I am grateful that El Hierro is giving us warning signs, so we can be prepared to take action if necessary. I love this planet and it’s never-ending changes are a continuous source of awe and humility to me. The earth is a force much bigger than us, and we must respect and appreciate the fact we have been allowed to live here. Good thoughts to you all of you, Alvin, thank you so much for keeping us informed!

AVCAN-It seems that the tremor begins to have serious explosions, that is not earthquakes are explosions as the 6:45 h or greater at 10:53 h UTC, we can go mouth indicating that progresses to the surface and that is already within 100m of it. In the show can go on to become great in a couple of days, as we will be about 50m and the explosions will leave the throwing area black pieces in the clouds of steam … night and say nothing, almost like fireworks, as long as they keep that mouth and do not open new mouths. If new mouths open, they will do more to SSW at bay or cove Tacorón Tacorón where certainly seems to be underground noises they are hearing. According to latest reports the chapter on twitter have said they will place a network of hydrophones to know in which direction is opening up the crack and put a Webcam arise … milk that would be … (Enrique).
