Double eruptions: Kamchatka’s Shiveluch volcano unleashes 8 km ash cloud, Anak Krakatau 3 km

October 4, 2011RUSSIAKamchatka volcano Shiveluch has emitted a column of ash up to 8km high. There is no danger for the local population. No volcanic dust fall has been registered in the nearby villages, the Kamchatka branch of the Geophysical service of the Russian Academy of Sciences reported on Tuesday. Last time Shiveluch became active in May 2009 and since then emissions of gas, ash and even lava have been occurring on a regular basis. –VOR
Indonesia– Anak Krakatau, a volcanic island in the Sunda Strait between the islands of Java and Sumatra in Indonesia, erupted on Tuesday sending columns of ash and rock hurtling high into the air. The rise in volcanic and earthquake activity prompted authorities to put in place a 2km exclusion zone for tourists and local fishermen. The Indonesian Volcanology and Geology Disaster Mitigation Centre reported that an estimated 6,000-7,000 volcanic earthquakes were recorded daily during the weekend and on Monday. Daily earthquake totals usually do not exceed 100-200. Seismologists are still attempting to determine the type and scale of the ongoing eruption.IWO

these volcanic activities all around the world we are seeing an increase in, do you think we could be hurled in volcanic winter? is Anak Krakatau about to have a huge eruption?

    • If we have major large scale VEI6 eruptions or larger that are sustained….It’s a possibility that we will experience regional plunges in temperatures and even partial glaciation in some extreme cases. I’m glad you enjoy the site and forgive the slow response…It’s a catch-up.

    • Not yet, but Raven —- even if it was, you know you are still on the top of the list of people who should have the book for research reference and teaching tool. You can order it on-line or it should be available to order through your local book stores. If you or anyone else order from the publisher. You can use the code: TANGO305 to get an additional 15% off – which should give you 40% off total list.

Katla is mentioned in Estonian media too. Jon was quoted. http://www.delfi.ee/news/paevauudised/valismaa/islandi-vulkaani-katla-all-variseb-maa-kardetakse-purset.d?id=59148396

    Translation:

Icelandic seismological stations have registered a series of earthquakes under Katla volcano. The strongest of the earthquakes was that of 3.9 magnitude. On Tuesday automatical devices registered an earthquake whose power was 3.3 magnitudes, as passed on by Ilta-sanomat. “I do not know if this an start of a eruption in Katla volcano or not,” wrote Jón Frimann, a blog-writer who is monitoring the situation, on his site. Often a series of earthquakes precede a volcanic eruption. The quaking of the earth crust is common in Iceland and one cannot claim that a big eruption is forthcoming.

It appears that in the Canaries it’s not just El Hierro and La Palma that might produce a Tsunami. Looks like this has just been announced to day
