6.9 magnitude earthquake strikes northern India, near Sikkim- 66 dead, 350 injured

September 18, 2011 – INDIA – A 6.9 magnitude earthquake struck the region of northern India near Sikkim. The quake had a depth of 20 km and was immediately followed by a 4.8 magnitude aftershock at relatively the same depth. The epicenter of the earthquake was 119 km (73 miles) NNW of Shiliguri, West Bengal, India and 572 km (355 miles) N of Kolkata (Calcutta), West Bengal, India. The earthquake struck in the mountainous region of India Sunday evening. The 6.9 magnitude is the 17th major earthquake to strike the planet in the month of September. –The Extinction Protocol
New Delhi:  At least 66 people have been killed after an earthquake measuring 6.9 on the Richter scale shook Sikkim this evening. Strong tremors were also felt in parts of North and East India. The epicenter of the quake is said to be just 64 kilometres North-West of Gangtok. Tremors were felt in Lucknow, Patna, Kolkata, New Delhi and the National Capital Region. Three aftershocks, of magnitude 5.7, 5.1 and 4.6 were also felt in Sikkim, says the India Meteorological Department. Many buildings in the state have developed cracks, including the Sikkim Manipal University building. There is no electricity in Gangtok and Darjeeling. Telephone lines have also snapped in some parts of Sikkim; phone lines are congested in West Bengal. Five Indian Air Force planes have also been pressed into action for relief operations. Small Army columns in Sikkim have also been mobilised post the earthquake. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has spoken to Sikkim’s Chief Minister Pawan Chamling and offered help. The Prime Minister has directed the Cabinet Secretary to call an emergency meeting of the Disaster Management Authority. –NDTV

    Telephone land lines to Gangtok were disconnected and not much information is available from the epicentre as expected at this time.

    UPDATE: 13:47 UTC:-

    The capital of Bhutan has received moderate shaking of intensity V. We continue to expect much damage.

    UPDATE: 13:44 UTC:-

    Gangtok and Shiliguri have recorded VII intensity values from the did you feel it? system on USGS meaning there is likely damage.

    The city of Lucknow recorded shaking for 30 seconds.

    UPDATE: 13:39 UTC:-

    Earthquakes in 1973, 1980, 2006 and 2007 have caused damage and fatalities near Sikkim, India in CATDAT.

    However, these earthquakes have had magnitudes much lower. The last earthquake in 2007 caused 2 fatalities near where the earthquake occurred today.

    UPDATE: 13:36 UTC:-

    ​PAGER is reporting a median 1 fatality from their estimate and a median 1-10 million USD damage.

    ​WAPMERR is however reporting that it could have between 100-400 fatalities, 200-800 injuries.

    Tremors felt in Delhi and many parts of north India; Reports of tremors also felt in Patna, Kolkata, Lucknow, Jaipur & Guwahati; A magnitude 6.8 earthquke hit India 12:40:48 UT (10:48 PM at epicenter) The depth of the hypocenter was at 20.7 km.

    The quake comes just days after an earthquake of 4.2 magnitude hit Haryana’s Sonepat district, sending tremors in New Delhi.

    Maranatha, things are heating fast… M6+ earthquakes everyday, volcanos awakening everywere. There are two places where volcanos are more and more active, iceland and indonesia. Do you think that like as in earthquakes, volcanos will be more geographically active? Big earthquakes are becoming global.

      I think they will because seismic waves have been known to perturb pockets or chambers of magma- most oft, the effect is delayed as was the case with Chile’s 8.8 earthquake in 2010 and subsequent eruption of the Puyehue-Cordón Caulle volcanic complex in 2011- so 2012 will likely be a very active year volcanically. Most of the earthquakes we’re seeing are tectonic in nature or the results of volcanism, or in the case with Sikkim, the result of an upper thrust of the Indian plate colliding with the Eurasian plate. All this, including increased turbulence in the South Pacific Ring of Fire, shows geological change is accelerating as interior planetary temperatures rise, magnetic field strength erodes, and sea-floor spreading accelerates, especially along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge which diverges in a rift through the center of Iceland.     20 people have been killed in total.

    ■7 people have been killed in Sikkim.
    ■5 people are reported dead in Nepal.
    ■2 persons were reportedly killed in Nalanda and Darbhanga districts of Bihar, out of which one died in a stampede.
    ■4 persons in total were also reported dead in Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri and Siliguri in West Bengal.
    ■Two Army personnel were also killed in the earthquake.
    UPDATE 17:30 UTC

    Spokesperson at Metropolitan Police Division SSP Madhav Kumar Nepal said, 24 persons were injured in the collapses caused by the earthquake in Kathmandu Valley alone. Likewise, two inmates were injured in a stampede at Bhadragol jail in Dillibazaar, Kathmandu, following the tremors. The roof of jail is said to have cracked in the tremor. Government spokesman Shrestha called on all the government bodies and social institutions to immediately collect the details of the damage and loss of lives and take to rescue operations.

    Quakes ‘could rupture glacial lakes’

    Glacial lakes in the Himalayas could pose a major hazard to population centres if they are ruptured by earthquakes, scientists say.

    The true risk to settlements and infrastructure downstream in the Hindu-Kush-Himalayas region is difficult to assess.

    But the Himalayan region is dotted with glacial lakes and is in a seismically active zone.

    Experts say that, on the basis of past records, a large quake in the region is overdue.

    “Such a disaster is very much possible, more so, when we are expecting a big earthquake in the region now,” says Sushil Kumar, a geophysicist with the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology in India.”

    i’m from sikkim,rongli a small town situated in a valley surrounded by huge mountains in all sides.for us earthquake isn’t a major threat as a landslide is our main concern,my house being at the bottom of a hill,everyone’s scared what with all the hydel projects being build now.death tolls have reached over 50 with 100s injured and roads blocked by landslides.we’re even scared to sleep in our homes and camping outside.even t.v news are broadcasting for a bigger quake further.please pray for us.we need it.
