Comet Elenin disintegrating and breaking up as it approaches the Sun

August 30, 2011 – SO MUCH FOR DOOMSDAY: Comet Elenin (C/2010 X1), widely known for inaccurate reports of its threat to Earth, appears to be breaking apart. Observations by amateur astronomer Michael Mattiazzo of Castlemaine, Australia show a rapid dimming and elongation of the comet’s nucleus akin to that of Comet LINEAR (C/1999 S4), which also disintegrated when it approached the Sun in 2000. Comets are fragile objects, so this development while unexpected comes as no surprise. Readers with pertinent images of Elenin are invited to submit them here. –Space Weather

I never believed this comet represented any kind of a threat to the planet and was quite frankly dismayed by the organized public campaign of fear-mongering on the internet and youtube about a potential doomsday event connected to this comet- most of it, as always, had absolutely no basis in science. –The Extinction Protocol

    Hi all,

    Forgive me, I’m new here and am just an amateur scientist… I have zero credentials, other than I am human and I tend to see things, curiously….

    That being said, with Ellie’s trajectory being “earth crossing” (Please correct me, if wrong); wouldn’t that mean that her breaking up is potentially catastrophic ???? Since they are visibly breaking apart, clearly there are new trajectories of the larger pieces to be recalculated, right? Please advise….

    Ps – what if it’s not breaking up, but rather was struck by an asteroid / object on it’s way through “the belt”…..

      Not this far out. Remember the trajectory of Comet Elenin is being controlled by the Sun; not Earth. The Sun has 99.99% of the mass of the entire solar system, so it rules what comes in and out of inter-planetary space. People talk about the electric effect of comets on Earth, but they forget about the electromagnetic effect of the plasma disc that out irradiates 85% of the known stars in the Milky Way Galaxy- our Sun. Elenin was probably dislodged from an Oort orbit…and that may be more cause for concern than a 3-4 km diameter comet that appears to be elongating in a break-up very similar to Comet Linear.

        Hi Alvin,

        Fascinating, indeed!!!! Understand and totally agree that the sun is in the drivers seat…. I think i may have stated my idea poorly…

        My thought was that although the overall trajectory of Ellie remains unchanged, it appears that the physical characteristic may have (not sure if I’m saying that correctly)…..

        If the recent CME’s energy and heat caused a rapid heating of Ellie, then internal pressures from gas and steam might have caused the comet to expand, crack/rupture, explode, etc….. ie “break up”…. (see STEREO obs of CME / Ellie interaction on following link)

        This break up, (as visible in photo animation posted here, scroll down – http://members.westnet.com.au/mmatti/sc.htm ), appears to show material going in all directions, but especially behind the comet…

        Perhaps it’s just dust and solar wind, but it does seem that some of it’s mass was blown off/apart and is “lagging”…. Like dropping a bucket of water off a tall building, it holds together at first, until it’s overcome by friction with air (ie CME) and disperses into thousands of smaller droplets that hit the ground separately, at different times (CME effect on Ellie metaphor – shotgun pellets experience a similiar phenomena, but different)….

        That being said, with the trailing pieces moving slower (as evidenced by the objects moving away from eachother) and arriving later, will this change in speed allow for the earth to progress through it’s orbit enough so that a potential intersection of the “trailing pieces” and the earth becomes mathematically probabl? ( as both proceed independently in their orbits around the sun)

        I’m not a doomsday’er and I don’t think Ellie is a threat to humanity…. However, I am hoping for a once in a lifetime meteor shower!!!!!

        PS- any thoughts on 45P/Honda-Mrkos-Pajdusakova’s 0.06AU flyby?

        You stated it fine, Dan. If the comet was close enough, the planet could fly through a debris trail and quite frankly, I think that is a huge concern going into the future as more comets disintegrate near perihelion and fragmentary debris could create bolide showers on Earth. The accounts of the destruction of the first world by indigenous people are replete with stories of fireball showers following across the horizon as D.S. Allan and J.B. Delair pointed out in numerous citations in their book Cataclysm, compelling evidence of a cosmic catastrophe.

        Comet Honda will pass relatively close to Earth about 8,980,000 km; 5,580,000 miles. It’s about half the size of Elenin, about 0.5 to 1.6 km in diameter and it’s a short-period comet which means it’s been here before without much incident. It passes every 5.26 years. Comet Honda is expected to reach a peak magnitude of around 7.3 in late September when it is near perihelion. Since the magnitude brightness scale is descending by order of brightness…that means the comet is not very bright and would have to be a 4 to be seen with the naked eye. However, it can be viewed with binoculars in the right vantage point. Other than that; we are seeing more cometary visitors and 2012-2014 may hold more surprises.

As I stated from the onset, despite being lashed by critics to the contrary, there was nothing of valid scientific concern behind the hype and mania being generated by this comet.       Hey Dan , just a small insert for you, Alvin and other intelegency regarding Elenin , Honda and any other incoming objects…
      Lots of talk about deviation of object trajectory from astroid impacts and other planetary
      gravitational forces, but nothing about :- Warped Space ( my passion )
      So depending on the the Sun & Moons locations relative to Earth there could very possibly be a space of extended deviation created to draw comet debry or small mangintude objects toward Earth out of the long term calculated trajectories by the boyz in the know ie An Astroid impact on the US west coast a week or so ago. that was not found and tracked by Astroid watch…. I rest my case !

        I hadn’t heard about the asteriod impact on the west coast… I heard about an impact in Australia…

        Craziest thing is, last weekend I picked up a rock off the beach here in South Florida and thought it was a meteorite…. never seen anything like before… especially on the beach in So Flo… It looked like lava, or some odd coral, but was charcoal color and heavy, like a cast iron skillet (although it’s not magnetic) with lots of “bubbles” like pumice, but many sizes, small to fairly large…. I thought it was prob just waterlogged lava, so i’ve been drying it out the last few days to see if the wieght changes…

        know any “at home test” I can do to check it out a bit?

    So what. No one can see that the imminent danger is in MAN and how we live. The Virginia earthquake last week was .2 from killing the biggest town in America. If that quake had been any bigger it could have caused the nuclear reactors to melt down and explode and then pump radiation into the path of Hiricain Irene which just swept the East coast and would have killed or radiated millions I’m sure.

        People ask about a sun appearing in the sky in one place but seen no where else. Why? That’s nothing that can be quantified by science.       There should be no sad faces. There is nothing in the Bible that points to this comet or any other comet being a threat other than a reference to Wormwood, which still no one knows what it means. The last people that listened to a biblical comet prophet committed suicide.

      The sad part is it takes the disaster to force people out of there selfish ways and work as a whole, yet much suffering will take place before that realization comes to pass, and if the powers that be continue the rule of mental and physical oppression then the paradigm can not shift, in conclusion the system has to break entirely so it can be rebuilt to it’s true potential, unfortunately for those based in our society of uber convenience that’End’ will pose such a shock, that the obsession of self indulgence will be their downfall and the majority of society will just give up out of sheer lack of motivation, some would be amazed just how important the tv, starbucks and a big mac is to most of the ego based human race and many would rather not live then live without such convenience.     hey guys plz check out this photo shot today in victoria australia. Zoom in to see unknown object near the sun. is it elenin or nibiru. Plz reply Alvin. It was shot through polaroid sunglasses and the tint strip on top of car windscreen. The round object also shows up on another pic but more behind clouds and cannot see the red object around it. Did not see this at the time

        Catholic parishners took this photo in Medjugorje of the sun from a miracle attributed to the Virgin Mary’s appearance….does it mean there was actually a physical black object in front of the Sun? Of course not and none was reported.

        If there are two Suns in the sky, I’ld like to know where the other one is hiding? Don’t believe everything your eyes have been condition by your brain to see. We’re in for more incidents of this nature.

Tried again today during clear sky and little round dots like this show up and change position as I move the camera around. Had a good look near the sun and see only ‘the’ sun. Got a little too excited I think when saw in that photo what looked to be like the red devil planet. Should have known better than to be fooled by a lens flare. Feel silly but better to admit an error right? Sometimes I wonder if Nibiru is real or not… Time to learn to use my telescope… Love and peace friends

    Hello Alvin,just a quick question that I hope you can comment on.We are all aware of the Mayan Prophesies in the coming year 2012 but I wanted to ask you whether there were any major events that DID come to pass after Mayan predictions thousands of years ago.I know there is hell of a lot on the subject and a lot of research required yet I can find nothing at the moment.With your comprehensive knowledge you may be able to offer some comments.In effect after the first Mayan cycle did anything happen on a Global scale of catastrophic events.If it did after their predictions then one supposes that one can assume there may well be turmoil in the coming months building up to 2012.On the assumption that nothing happened after the Mayan predictions thousands of years ago (The Mayan Cycles) then maybe we have nothing to fear.I am genuinely interested in your comments and constructive criticism.

      According to many researchers, Dr. Calleman for one. The December date is the end of the Long Count Calendar. It is not the end of the world, but the end of a cycle.

      The Tzolkin calendar on the other hand is 260 days of all the 9 levels compressed into 7 “days” and “nights” of 18 days each. That is where we are right now…on the 5th night. The Tzolkin ends on October 28, 2011 and has more to do with alignments and our consciousness than anything else. See calleman.com for more info.

    I like the site, congrats, but I see more “fear, based in facts and science” here,

    Concerning the possible disintegration of Elenin. The comet is going through a process called fissioning due to intense plasma interaction with the Sun.

    If It continues to fragment it will either result in a body of debris following a linear path such as the Shoemaker/Levy which struck Jupiter or simply go kaboom like P17/Holmes. Both can be researched an visuals of both examined online with a simple google search.

    In either case the trajectory of debris will be altered. So contrary to those who dismiss Elenin as a non-event, there is an increased probability of impact with debris.

      Fissioning by definition is “the act or process of splitting into parts.” The diameter of Elenin was 3-4 km. The debris is nowhere near the Earth and for there to be a plasma reaction with the Sun, the solar winds are excited when they interface with comets according to known laws of solar astrophysics. Yesterday, the solar winds were close to one of the most significant lows on record. Solar wind speed has only jumped in the last 24 hours because of a coronal hole.

    If an object (such as Earth) had been near the path of the fragments in April or July, 1993, the fragments, although in a straight line relative to each other, would span a large area relative to the object. Is it not possible that if some fragments, whether a kilometer or 100 m in diameter, may become trapped in the Earth’s gravitational field, resulting in impact?
