Banda Sea earthquake reignites seismic swarm near Vanuatu

August 30, 2011 – VANUATU – The Banda Sea earthquake along the Banda plate appears to have reignited the seismic aftershock swarm that has been gnawing away at the stability of the Vanuatu region since the outbreak of the double 7.0+ magnitude earthquakes struck the region over a week ago. After the 6.8 earthquake in the Banda Sea, Vanuatu was rocked by a 4.9, 5.0, 5.3 and a 5.1 magnitude earthquake in quick succession. –The Extinction Protocol

    It’s amazing, but until these recent earthquakes, I didn’t even know there was a Vanuatu. After looking it up, I did find out that the name means vanua (“home” or “land”) and tu (“stand”), which when put together indicates the independent status of the new nation. They were called New Hebrides prior to 1980 when they received their independence. It is located some 1,750 kilometers (1,090 mi) east of northern Australia, 500 kilometers (310 mi) northeast of New Caledonia, west of Fiji, and southeast of the Solomon Islands, near New Guinea.     Sorry, just a bit of info in case anyone else had the same problem as I did. I’m the type of person who likes to have a mental picture of where an area is when things start happening. The appear to be the islands I have seen in the movie South Pacific or in the old TV show McHale’s Navy. (My apologies if you don’t know the movie or TV show.)

    But back to the original purpose of this article, they definitely sit on the Ring of Fire and bear watching. They are also volcanic.
