Moderate earthquake in northern Pakistan sparks panic

August 29, 2011ISLAMABAD – A medium intensity earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale jolted several parts of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa including Peshawar early on Saturday morning. According to the metrological office, the tremors were felt in different districts including Peshawar, Mardan, Charsadda, Nowshera, Chitral, Dir and Malakand divisions. The epicentre was somewhere beneath the Hindukush mountain range in northern Pakistan, the met office said. No causality, injury or loss of property resulting due to the earthquake was reported till the filing of this report. The met office said the duration of the tremors was only for a few seconds. However, eyewitnesses reported seeing many panicked people rushing out of their homes and fearfully reciting Quranic verses. –Tribune
