Bear attack kills father and daughter and stuns Siberian community

August 17, 2011SIBERIAAdvisory – A distraught mother listened on a mobile phone as her teenage daughter was eaten alive by a brown bear and its three cubs. Olga Moskalyova, 19, gave an horrific hour-long running commentary on her own death in three separate calls as the wild animals killed her. She screamed: “Mum, the bear is eating me! Mum, it’s such agony. Mum, help!’” Her mother Tatiana said that at first thought she was joking. “But then I heard the real horror and pain in Olga’s voice, and the sounds of a bear growling and chewing.” She added: “I could have died then and there from shock.” Unknown to Tatiana, the bear had already killed her husband Igor Tsyganenkov – Olga’s stepfather – by overpowering him, breaking his neck and smashing his skull. Olga, a trainee psychologist, saw the attack on her stepfather in tall grass and reeds by a river in Russia and fled for 70 yards before the mother bear grabbed her leg. As the creature toyed with her, she managed to call Tatiana several times during the prolonged attack. Tatiana rang her husband – not knowing he was already dead – but got no answer.  Mum, the bear is eating me! Mum, it’s such agony. Mum, help! She alerted the police and relatives in the village of Termalniy, near Petropavlovsk Kamchatskiy, in the extreme east of Siberia. She begged them to rush to the river where the pair had gone to retrieve a fishing rod that Igor had left. In a second call, a weak Olga gasped: “Mum, the bears are back. She came back and brought her three babies. They’re… eating me”. Finally, in her last call – almost an hour after the first – Olga sensed she was on the verge of death. With the bears having apparently left her to die, she said: “Mum, it’s not hurting anymore. I don’t feel the pain. Forgive me for everything, I love you so much.” Six hunters were sent in by the emergency services to kill the mother bear and her three cubs. The double killing is the latest in a spate of bear attacks across Russia, as the hungry animals seek food in areas where people have encroached and settled on their former habitat. –Express.UK

    Condolences………………

On another note this reminds me of the article I read earlier today where off Anse Lazio beach, Paslin Island in the Seychelles. A newlywed bride witnessed what was describe as a gruesome incident from where she lay sunbathing on the beach. Her husband of just under two weeks had gone in the water when she and others heard screams – he was being attacked by what the official are calling a rogue shark.

What a brave kid…. I can’t imagine the horror the mother must have felt when this became a reality. May God Bless this Family… My prayers go out to all those involved.

    Genesis 1:26 (KJV)
And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have DOMINION over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

It seems that our Dominion over Beast is deteriorating as the Eco Systems continue to suffer. Hunger is a great motivator for any living thing to cross the line.

Police have yet to determine if charges will be laid against the owner of a pitbull terrier that killed a four-year-old girl and injured her two cousins in Melbourne’s northwest.
Police say the attack happened at a house in Lahy Street, St Albans, at 8.10pm (AEST) on Wednesday.
It is believed the dog escaped from a neighbour’s yard and entered the home where Ayen Chol and her five-year-old cousin were playing.
Ayen died at the scene despite ambulance officers’ attempts to revive her.
Another cousin, aged 30, suffered bite wounds to her hands and arms, while the five-year-old girl was bitten on the face. Both were taken to Sunshine Hospital in a stable condition.
Superintendent Graham Kent said police were at the early stages of the investigation.
“It’s yet to be fully investigated to see whether or not there’s been any offence committed,” Superintendent Graham Kent said.
“Our focus at this stage is to find out what happened and in the process of doing that we will find out whether or not there’s been any offence.”
He said that the owner of the dog was cooperating with police.
Daniel Atem, another cousin of the victims, described Ayen as “a lovely little girl, very talkative and popular in kindergarten”.
Ayen’s mother, Jaclin Appok, 30, is being comforted by Sudanese community leaders, while her father is in Southern Sudan helping the country with its recently won independence.
The family arrived in Australia in 2004 after spending three years in Egypt awaiting resettlement.
They were living at their cousin’s house after their own home burned down

Just wondering if this is a true story, how could she call and talk to her mother on the phone will being eaten by a bear. Then the bear leaves and comes back with her 3 other babies and finished attacking and ate her alive. She talked on the phone an hour to her mother while the attack happened. Strange story

    • As gruesome as this sounds, I am also wondering how true this is. It would seem to me that she would have bled to death or gone into shock after the initial attack. I just can’t see making calling “Tatiana several times during the prolonged attack”. Just call me skeptical.

On the other hand, if this true, it is heartbreaking.

More heart breaking for the bears. They were innocent. They never asked for people to encroach into their habitat. 2 people die, so 4 bears have to pay the price. That is much more heart breaking.

Lexicon, what self-righteous drivel. A human life is worth more than an animal’s. When an animal threatens humans and becomes a man-eater, it needs to be put down.

How about mourning the loss of sentient life, people who left behind grieving loved ones.

I’m with you B. Williams. Finding this one hard to believe. Seems to defy the true laws of nature. On both sides of the fence. Not saying you can’t survive a bear attack. Just can’t seem to rap my brain around someone being fully conscience while being eaten by a bear or any other wild animal. Correct me if I’m wrong, but my understanding is that attacking animals go straight for the throat/neck. Snap….. you’re gone. Kinda like her father. If this IS a true story, my condolences.

The areas of a body that a hungry bear will concentrate on, do not initially include the head, arms and hands… or legs and feet. This very young woman showed unheard-of strength of mind to witness what was happening to her and still maintain her consciousness. Most folks would have simply passed out from the shock. It is not a strange story. It is an incredible one.

A large predator will bite the legs of its prey to immobilize it; gangs of coyotes will bite ankles until an animal falls. Then you feed it to the kids? Sounds plausible to me.

If it grabbed her by the leg it probably started there. Also if it had already killed the husband it might have been eating more slowly.

Az Cris, before the fall of Adam and Eve all the animals probably were not ferocious, just as we are told the children will play with the lion and the asp etc. after the resurrection.

Makes sense that as the world becomes more wicked and satan gains his full power, the animals become more ferocious.

    Praying for that family.

    • Gen, you are right. The escalating ferocity and violence in man is similarly reflected in beasts. When disasters overturn their habitats, there will be greater and greater danger of them venturing into cities for food- regardless of who got their first. When things collapse, we will have to compete with every other creature for survival as in any crisis.

We’re animals as well, and we are part of the nature’s environment. The land is ours to take. I don’t see much need for bears, we can exterminate them all for all I care. Species, cultures, civilizations go extinct all the time, whether it’s the dinosaurs or the Dodo. Earth will do just fine.

and by the way, “alternative food sources”, seriously.. lol Do you think a bear grasps the concept “alternative food sources”? As in, I will only snack on humans if I’m really really hungry. A bear will eat anything if it’s hungry.

“mother bear being forced to do anything to find food for herself and her cubs as her habitat is destroyed is also horrendous. No win/win here..” -political correctness!

By the way, all that “encroaching its habitat” BS.. Siberia is not Germany, population density wise.

I do fervently wish that all of you ladies would PLEEEASE understand that the monthly menstruation cycle of a healthy woman will bring a bear to your location, and most certainly if that animal is within 5 miles of you. There is nothing you can do to confuse a bear’s senses. A male bear will approach for a different reason than a female bear will… but the end is the same. Such attacks happen FAR more frequently on women than upon men. I do not understand why park rangers don’t go out of their way to explain why and to warn citizens to plan their excursions into the wild AROUND a woman’s monthly cycle. Ladies, PLEASE pass this information to family and friends. Apparently the authorities in the various nations don’t think it is worth the trouble to tell you.

This is one of the most horrific news stories I have read on here. I just cried, as a mother listening to your child dying in that kind of horrific situation and being unable to help or protect is awful. At the same time a mother bear being forced to do anything to find food for herself and her cubs as her habitat is destroyed is also horrendous. No win/win here just utter sadness as all unravels. Peace be with you all.

    • Of course, it was real…people just can’t believe such viscereal incidents happen. The Romans were equally dismayed at seeing Christians singing when eaten by lions in the Colosseum, and Inquistors were startled to find Protestants singing when being burned alive during the Inquisition, as were the incidents reported by soldiers in war of unusal shock behavior following demolition amputations to their fellow comrades. The mind can disconnect from its experiences, no matter how traumatic.

That is just the same article with pictures. I searched for an obituary or actual newspaper article from the town online and found nothing. Still doesn’t prove if its real or fake but i’m not sold on it yet. They live in bear country, wouldnt you know how to act around bears? Granted all bets are off when your around a mother with cubs, but a bear will usually stomp on its prey and kill it, especially if its for the cubs to eat, not let it live while it slowly eats. It never says what kind of bear or if they ever found and killed the bears. Usually these facts are in a reputable story.

so this ordeal supposedly happened for an hour….and no one could get there? The first and last phone call were an hour apart and the mother called for help and nothing? I would think If I had a child call me under those circumstances I would go there myself, but it seems the mother just sat and talked? A few holes in this story. Not saying its not real but alot of information has been left out to make it suspect at least.

Between now and then over 200 people were killed in vehicle accidents in Russia. Do we know how unkind those accidents sounded or looked? Bear attacks are gruesome but car accidents take 100 of thousands more people that we know and love than bears do.

Most people know sharks and army ants (to name two predators) eat their prey alive. Many do not know (or prefer not to know) that most predators do the same, unless the prey is large and strong enough to pose an actual threat. Thus a cheetah kills an antelope quickly lest the antelope manage to kick the cheetah in the head. And I imagine most scenes of prey animals still bleating and struggling as they are being eaten are edited out of most published videos. As for using her cell phone, I praise the girl for doing what little she could to summon help. I have no idea whether this story is true or not (same as most of the stories I read). But it can’t be dismissed on the grounds that either the bears or the girl acted impossibly–both the bears’ actions and the girl’s actions as described were perfectly possible, indeed perfectly natural.

There’s no doubt that Olga’s suffering is heartbreaking and horrifying, to say the least. But I am equally shocked that they killed the bear and the three offspring. The bear wasn’t acting malevolently and it didn’t break into the families house with the intent to do harm. Is it so strange and insufferable that a bear acted the way any wild animal would act? A hungry animal with an intention to feed its young is not out of the ordinary, and it’s not like the bear was wandering out of it’s natural territory. Unfortunately, Olga and her stepfather happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. I’m sad for the family but grieved for the murder of the bear and her cubs, as well as any other bear destroyed during the hunt.

I am a woman who lives in North Vancouver British Columbia, and I just laugh when I hear the same old pop culture, phony sympathy for the, “bear’s plight” rerun, over and over again because were on there territory crap. They have lots of room here and still we hear these pseudo intellects blathering about a bears plight? Talk about a bunch of mealy mouthed bandwagon joining phonies! Think they’ed ever give up a hamburger?
I see no reason that bears should live without their own predator’s attacks and that would be us. I like to go in the woods but always with a wary eye, several dogs and if I could carry a hunting gun I would! The bigger the better, because as we’ve been hearing, the grizzlies are on there way down. More for us to eat when food prices go up I guess, and they are with the economy the way it is. Not that I’d ever eat meat.
What I think, is that if this were a real community where you knew the people you encountered on the street, and a bear killed an acqaintance, instead of car driving shoppers [myself included], the collective “Symmmmpathies”, would do an about face.

I´d concurr with Native Indian on the point that when you know you live in bear (wolf, lion) country, you´d better be properly armed and aware of your surroundings. Wherever these predators live, human population is sparse, and the response time of any kind of rescuing authority is on average longer than you can survive an attack.

What I can´t subscribe to is that a human life is more valuable than an animal life (or any life for the matter). Still, I eat meat (and I love it), and although it´s not the bears fault for coming my way, I would definitely shoot him, skin and disembowel him etc. pp.. but I wouldn´t go out to kill a bear the avenge another human’s life. Sure, that´s probably not what the authorities had in mind either, they followed security protocols, because they are charged with the responsibility to protect human life.

Bears have been driven out of their natural habitat in Germany more than two hundred years ago, back when the population density was roughly a tenth of what it is now, or about as high as the density of the US today (which is far less homogenous). With the population of the world still growing (last monday 7 billion threshold crossed), the frontier to the wilderness will become ever narrower, increasing the number of animal attacks (though still not as much as traffic kills). While I think everybody may believe what he likes, I do not believe this has anything to do with the Bible or any other religious revelations.

My condolences go to Tatiana and everyone else who is mourning (also those who were killed in traffic accidents, in war, famine and plague). Rarely, those who owe pay the price, but somebody always pays
