Pennsylvania girl struck by lightning bolt on sunny day

July 31, 2011 – CANONSBURG, Pa. (AP) — An 11-year-old western Pennsylvania girl is recovering after she was struck by a bolt from the blue. Lisa Wehrle tells the Observer-Reporter newspaper of Washington, Pa., that the sun was shining when her daughter, Britney, was struck by lightning Friday, apparently from a storm several miles away. Lisa Wehrle says, “There was no rain. It was a beautiful day. All she heard was some thunder.” The lightning hit Britney as she was walking down a hill in North Strabane Township with a friend about 2:30 p.m. that day. The bolt hit her on the left shoulder, leaving a burn-like mark and exited her wrist, where it left another mark. She was treated at a Pittsburgh hospital. Doctors discovered her arm was broken, but otherwise she’s OK. –Yahoo News

    Wow, it is getting downright scary to be outside, you really don’t know when lightning will strike! I hope she heals up quickly.

    I’ve been following this blog for a while now… I see a lot of truth in what you say, sir.

    I just wanted to report this same thing happening today in North Carolina. A storm had come around our house and moved on, leaving sunny skies for as far as the eye could see. There was a loud clap of thunder (so far out of my mind at the time, I jumped, even).

    The lightning strike that followed immediately afterward was extremely bright and visible to us inside the house even though the sun was shining brightly as well.

    Was rather surprised to log on and see this here tonight!

    Scary indeed. Poor child. We have been having storms come out of no where. I swear its bright and sunny than bam thunder rolls in and lighting. I have to go duck and cover and the weather people never forecast anything until a small storm has already passed.

    Its scary, but its not something new. Scientisct always knew that a ligntning strike can occur several miles away from a thunderstorm since a lightningstrike does not have to travel the shortest way to the ground.

    Lightnin can strike a person from storms miles away. It is pretty scary. They used to call my soccer games off when I was a kid if there was lightning within 25 miles.

    I just read an article saying cloud to ground lightning traveling out the back end of a storm was clocked in Florida traveling 25 miles in LESS than 1 second. That is amazing.

    Alvin, you have just used an image here of the sun being white. Have you noticed that the sun is now white and not yellow? It is easy to look at it through the leaves of a tree. I like that our sun is changing, and some say that it is because it now sends more than just physical light.

      yeah i noticed that too. The sun seems extremely bright and very white. Doesnt even come close to beeing yellow. but maybe its just in our heads and its nothing:P

    If you can here thunder, even with clear skies, lightening is possible. I hope they can help mend her broken arm.

    Lucy P, thank you for that cloud link. Those clouds are amazing. The second photo with the grey clouds really caught my attention. They were very similar to the clouds I saw before the 7.6 Kermadec Islands quake earlier in July. Just like looking at the ocean and the waves rolling in. The wind was blowing them towards the coast on the east and they just kept rolling past.

    Just wish I had got a photo.

    It is good to see the Royal Meteorological Society are gathering details of days and places of these cloud formations.

    Alvin the way things are going you might need a category for just clouds or cloud formations.
