6.0 magnitude earthquake strikes near Fiji Islands

July 22, 2011 – SUVA – A 6.0 magnitude earthquake struck south of the main island of Suva in the Fiji Islands today. The earthquake had a depth of 600 km and was too deep to generate tsunami waves as many of the earthquakes that strike Fiji generally are. Seismic tension has been building along tectonic plate boundaries in the South Pacific since February of 2011. –The Extinction Protocol

    I can remember when a 6 was considered a “large” earthquake – now we’re having them daily. Of course, reporting has gotten better, but …. still

    Where’s the 5.1 that happened in Christchurch at 17.39 GMT on Thursday !!! Is it a hoax or what… Can’t find it on USGS or ESMC… Bizarre…

    Well, there are on average 134 6.0 to 6.9 earthquakes each year since 1990, which is almost one every other day, so reporting every single one regardless of location doesn’t help. There are on average 1319 5.0-5.9 earthquakes each year since 1990, which is a little over 4 every day.

    However, there are already 126 (or more?) 6.0-6.9 earthquakes that have occurred this year and it is still only July (this beats 2001 (121) and almost ties 2002 (127). As for 5.0-5.9 earthquakes, we have already zipped past 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, and 2004 (year total) with 1546 total to date. As for 7.0-7.9 we have already bested all of 2004 and 2005 and are not far behind others, except for 2009 and 2010 (revealing an apparent increasing trend).

    We have had 1 – 8.0 or greater (Japan in March). 2007 tops the last ten years with 4. Will we see another before year’s end? In my non-expert opinion, with the increase in apparent earth changes, it seems likely, perhaps as many as 2 or 3 or more are possible, but we will have to see. If there is a continued upward trend next year, could be even more deadly.

    John A, the Balleny Islands region quake on 21 July was recorded by Geoscience Australia as a 6.0 also. Taken as a preferred figure using multiple locations.

    I have noticed that quite a few of the recent Pacific Ocean quakes have been recorded higher by Geoscience Australia than USGS.

      It would appear that sometimes these figures are conservative. I’ll keep checking that site in the future, thanks. Note that according to the USGS site, “starting in January 2009, the USGS National Earthquake Information Center no longer locates earthquakes smaller than magnitude 4.5 outside the United States, unless we receive specific information that the earthquake was felt or caused damage. “
