Tectonic plates rattle- more turbulence at the South Pole

June 21, 2011ANTARCTICAA 5.5 magnitude earthquake struck the South Sandwich Islands region, situated around 750km south east of South Georgia, in the South Atlantic early Sunday.  It was the latest in a series of quakes to hit the Antarctic Region during the past 24 hours. The moderate quake struck at 9.37am GMT at a depth of 137km and was centered 69 km (42 miles) NNW of Visokoi Island and 330 km (205 miles) NNW of Bristol Island. The last significant earthquake to be recorded in the South Sandwich Islands region occurred on 08 December 2010 when a magnitude 6.5 quake struck 85 km (55 miles) ENE of Visokoi Island…the earthquake was followed by a 4.9 magnitude quake along the Pacific-Antarctic Ridge at 12.05pm.  The quake was measured at a depth of 10.3 km (6.4 miles). Another moderate earthquake struck the Antarctic region early Saturday. The 5.1 magnitude quake which struck the Balleny Islands region 479 km (297 miles) NW of Scott Island, Antarctica, at 5.56am on Saturday. The quake was measured at a depth of 15.8 km (9.8 miles), according to the US Geological Survey (USGS). The Pacific–Antarctic Ridge (PAR) is a divergent tectonic plate boundary located on the seafloor of the South Pacific Ocean, separating the Pacific Plate from the Antarctic Plate. –Irish Weather On-line


Current readings in Antarctica reflecting tension from tectonic plate agitation in Pacific Ring of Fire. There has been an inordinate amount of tectontic plate movement in the last few days. People living in high-risk seismic zones should be possibly alert for potential seismic events over the next 48 hours.

    I can’t remember where I read it but someone has calculated that the Chilean, Christchurch and Japan earthquakes (all ocurring anti clockwise around the ‘Ring of Fire’) will be soon followed by an event on the ‘fourth corner’ on the San Andeas Fault sometime later this year. Has anyone read anything about this? Does it make sense geologically, as the pressures build up, cause an event only to allow pressure to build up further along the plate margins? Any thoughts?


    • We know earthquake generate seismic waves which propagate through the planet’s mantle and we know transference of stress can occur along faults. We also know plates jostle each other in tight configuration in cases of convergence, or when they transform or push on others when they diverge. In the northern hemisphere, we are long overdue and regions where rifts are located are especially susceptible to plate shifting like Baja California and the transform boundary region of San Andreas in particular. That being said; the Caribbean, Pan America, Alaska, the Mediterranean, East Africa and the Cascadian system are also stress points for potential flare-ups.
