5.0 earthquake strikes outstide Christchurch on south island of New Zealand

June 6, 2011CHRISTCHURCH, NzA 5.0 (5.5) earthquake has struck outside the city of Christchurch on the south island of New Zealand once again. The quake was incredibly shallow; registering at 3.8 km on maps according to the USGS.
A shallow 5.0 (5.5) -magnitude aftershock rocked the quake-hit New Zealand city of Christchurch on Monday, shaking items off shelves but not generating any reports of serious damage, officials said. New Zealand’s second largest city was devastated by a 6.3-magnitude earthquake in February which claimed 181 lives, and followed a stronger, but less destructive 7.0 quake last September. The latest quake hit at 9:09 am (2109 Sunday GMT) and was centred 22 kilometres (14 miles) west of the city at a depth of just three kilometres, the US Geological Survey said. New Zealand’s GNS Science said the quake caused only minor damage. Retail worker Jo Edmond told the Christchurch Press that stock fell from shelves in the Warehouse supermarket, near the tremor’s epicentre, and she was feeling “a little bit nervous”. “The store’s a bit of a mess. There’s a lot of glass, but nothing too bad,” she told the Press. Christchurch was also hit by another smaller aftershock, measuring 3.7, about an hour before the 5.0 tremor, GNS Science said. The city has experienced thousands of minor shakes since February’s disaster and scientists said last week that there was an almost one-in-four chance of another quake measuring 6.0 to 7.0 in the next 12 months. –AFP

It doesn’t have to be really big if it’s shallow – not good. I’m surprised that people are not nervous wrecks in Christchurch.

This quake is part of a swarm of earthquakes to hit New Zealand. If you want to see what it looks like go to Geonet NZ and click on latest quakes, also, you can check the siesmographs positioned up and down the country to “see” the rythmn of the ground shakes. We keep an eye on USGS earthquakes specifically around the pacific plate then monitor NZ graphs to see follow on effect, there’s a pattern forming of reciprocal earthquakes that can be counted in hours between major quakes effecting Indonesia, South America, Japan and Southern Ocean plates (close to South pole) plus opposite quakes between North and South poles. We have a good laugh at the local media who keep reassuring the public that its a one in a hundred, whoops one in a decade, whoops one in year, one in a month, one in a week……… the truth now, its three times a day ranging between mag 3.5 to 5.5 upward. Believe it or not the Government still insist on trying to rebuild Christchurch over major fault lines with the main focus on the rugby world cup and we don’t want to scare the tourists “do we”. We know its a smoke screen but fortunately for NZ we built our Government buildings right on top of a major fault line that threatens to open up and swallow the lot of them all in one sitting (if were lucky!) – will keep you posted if we hear a great rumbling ……..

NASA has reported on their site, SpaceWeather.com that on June 4th a Coronal Mass Ejection hit earth sparking a G2 class geometric storm. Would this be in anyway coincedental regading the surge in volcanic activity before and after this date or is there some conection between the two. I find this interesting and disturbing as the earth is entering a 11 year solar active cycle.

    • Solar astrophysics is still exploring the extent of the link between the Sun and the Earth. Earth is experiencing its own set of escalating problems, independent of the current cycle of the Sun. Earth’s magnetic field, for instance, doesn’t flip in conjuction with the Sun’s magnetic cycle every 11 years. Solar winds can cause the planet’s magnetic field to quiver; magnetic entanglement can occur between Earth and sunspots on the Sun, cosmic radiation from the Sun does effect the planet in numerous ways —- and so on, but I wouldn’t blame this current spat of vulcanism on a geomagnetic storm.

      • The Lord has brought no such place to my attention. Believers are entrusted with the world’s most solemn message and warnings- the Creator of the universe is soon to return to rescue His redeemed and execute a terrible judgment on a world which has no regard for His law, mercy or authority. We are admonished not to congregate in one place before this crisis unfolds but to bring light, love and healing to a world now languishing in sin and ruin. A city that is set upon a hill cannot be hid. Matt. 5:14. Like a mighty whirlwind, soon destruction will roll across the land without ceasing and many of the world’s proudest cities, which have long stood the testament of time, will be laid to dust. While wheat is now languishing in the field and dying under the blaze of a wanton Sun, we have a mighty work to do to warn the world of the storm gathering on the horizon. Millions have no knowledge of the King of the Universe, before whom, every knee will soon one day bow and every one will be called before in judgment to stand. A lifetime of ridicule hurled at us by unbelievers will not be equal to even one moment of anguish or distress the rejecters of light will suffer; as they will have neither shelter, providence, nor protection from the destruction that wasteth at noonday. “Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked. Because thou hast made the Lord, which is my refuge, even the Most High thy habitation.” Psalm 91:9. Said the Psalmist David: “Be merciful unto me, O God…for my soul trusteth in thee; yea, in the shadow of thy wings will I make my refuge, until these calamities be overpast.” Psalm 57:1 God will be with His faithful followers just as He protected the Israelites in the land of Goshen when plagues lay waste to the ancient Sun kingdom of Egypt.

        Blessings in Christ,
        Alvin

I too live in ChCh – would like to know why NZ site Geonet reported this morning’s shake as a 5.5 of 15kms depth, but USGC has it at a 5.0, 3.5kms depth and another international site has it recorded as a 5mag at 2km depth-Who is giving the correct info- we have had a lot of experience with the shakes now let’s face it, and uh- that was definitely a 5.5!!!!!

Here is something to worry about: http://www.ts-bochum.de/?p=1068
They say the extinct volcanoes Akaroa and Lyttleton only a few kilometers south of Christchurch could erupt again!
I think this is exactly the same what your theory says, right Alvin?

An aftershock measuring M5.5, was measured near Christchurch yesterday evening, but we have had to wait til now to report that it has been classified as CATDAT ORANGE. This has been the 6th largest aftershock since the February earthquake.

MMI of 7 (damaging) has been reported in 3 areas, with unconfirmed reports of further damage to existing damaged buildings. An MMI of 6 was also reported in many localities (83 reports from NZ Geonet), corresponding to slightly damaging. It was felt across the South Island.

Fay Burson, who is the manager of bottle store Henry’s in Rolleston, said she probably lost more stock during today’s shake than in February’s magnitude-6.3. “It was a very severe initial jolt”. Read the stuff report here.

The economic loss of this quake will be impossible to calculate but will be over $100,000 USD.

Hi Jens….it was on Fox news and CNN about a month ago that according to the experts no volcano can be considered extinct any longer. Just a short blurb on the news then on to other news worthy items for example Lady GaGa ranking Forbes most powerful female and Kim Kardashians wedding plans drivel.

Firstly, our hearts go out to you all in Christchurch. May our God watch over you.

Radiogirl, maybe you should do what I did. A couple of weeks ago one of our TV stations was asking for people to email in news items. So I did.

I emailed them and told them that very often I read about world events at least a day before I see them on TV if at all. That is on Extinction Protocol. Also that many events never reach it to the mainstream media.

Although a lot of people don’t SEEM to want to know about what is happening to our world I wonder about that. During the Queensland floods and the Christchurch earthquake three of our TV stations ran non stop from about 6.00 am till 11.00 pm for days covering both events. If the majority of people had complained about missing their usual shows I am sure they would have stopped.

They started covering Japan but because of the nuclear threat the journalists came home.
