Comet Elenin’s approach may be less than spectacular say scientists

May 5, 2011 – “That is what happens with these long-period comets that come in from way outside our planetary system,” said Don Yeomans of NASA’s Near-Earth Object Program Office at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. “They make these long, majestic, speedy arcs through our solar system, and sometimes they put on a great show. But not Elenin. Right now that comet looks kind of wimpy.” How does a NASA scientist define cometary wimpiness? “We’re talking about how a comet looks as it safely flies past us,” said Yeomans. “Some cometary visitors arriving from beyond the planetary region – like Hale-Bopp in 1997 — have really lit up the night sky where you can see them easily with the naked eye as they safely transit the inner-solar system. But Elenin is trending toward the other end of the spectrum. You’ll probably need a good pair of binoculars, clear skies, and a dark, secluded location to see it even on its brightest night.” Comet Elenin should be at its brightest shortly before the time of its closest approach to Earth on Oct. 16 of this year. At its closest point, it will be 35 million kilometers (22 million miles) from us. Can this icy interloper influence us from where it is, or where it will be in the future? What about this celestial object inspiring some shifting of the tides or even tectonic plates here on Earth? There have been some incorrect Internet speculations that external forces could cause comet Elenin to come closer. “Comet Elenin will not encounter any dark bodies that could perturb its orbit, nor will it influence us in any way here on Earth,” said Yeomans. “It will get no closer to Earth than 35 million kilometers [about 22 million miles].” “Comet Elenin will not only be far away, it is also on the small side for comets,” said Yeomans. “And comets are not the most densely-packed objects out there. They usually have the density of something akin to loosely packed icy dirt.
“So you’ve got a modest-sized icy dirtball that is getting no closer than 35 million kilometers,” said Yeomans. “It will have an immeasurably miniscule influence on our planet. By comparison, my subcompact automobile exerts a greater influence on the ocean’s tides than comet Elenin ever will.” Yeomans did have one final thought on comet Elenin. “This comet may not put on a great show. Just as certainly, it will not cause any disruptions here on Earth. But there is a cause to marvel,” said Yeomans. “This intrepid little traveler will offer astronomers a chance to study a relatively young comet that came here from well beyond our solar system’s planetary region. After a short while, it will be headed back out again, and we will not see or hear from Elenin for thousands of years. That’s pretty cool.” –Physics.org

jHi Alvin, Can one really believe this guy Yeomans?Or is it a masterly understatement by NASA? What is your view about Elenin? Also where I live local channels are going ballistic showing programs about doom and major quakes on May 21 .Don’t laugh but is it true Alvin?Regards Saisuji

    • I’ve watched all the Youtube videos on this comet, and see nothing the guy is referring to as any kind of harbinger of doom. This comet is a long-period comet but it’s a non-event. Correlating a comet’s position with earthquake outbreaks on Earth, when it has mass less than Jupiter, which is not causing quakes does not even merit me discussing it. The hype is all do to people making Youtube videos who have little or no astrophysical background in the sciences. So be it, everyone has that right to do as they please…but from crying wolf– when something ominous does really show up (and that day will come) it won’t be believed by any.

Well, you’ll know on May 22nd? But they’ll always be a doomsday date in the near future. How about June 2st, Summer Solstice? You can live in fear and trepidation or you can embrace your awesome existence on this incredible planet.

Well well thank you for this one Alvin….I guess there will be a lot of videos about Elenin killing us all that may now hopefully come off the internet! God only knows there is enough to worry about! As always thank you for the educational and informative posts. I am not only a daily watcher but now fear an hourly watcher lol…
    Blessings to you as always.

So Alvin, why are people saying Elenin caused the Japan EQ?

    • If this comet caused an earthquake, it will be the first in my knowledge to do so—— why people have chosen this comet as a doomsday comet and there have been other comets much larger in size which came and passed without a whimper is beyond me.

Hey Alvin , have been following your blog for sometime now . Just want to say thank you for updating the event that is not normally shown on t.v. .
This post reminds me of a youtube video .

The co-relation between this comet with major earthquake/disaster is remarkable .
Many individuals claimed this comet might be so called ‘ planet x/ nibiru ‘ .
    Can this be true ?
Thank you for the hard work you put in all this time .
    God bless you .

There is no correlation beween Elenin and and Planet X or Nibiru and that video is pure nonsense. Planet X isn’t even Nibiru. Elenin is simply a comet, not a Brown Dwarf and has been seen by many amateur astronomers. The doomsdayers say Nibiru is the “Second Sun” that can’t be seen as it’s coming from the South yet Elenin is not.

This whole Elenin/Nibiru nonsense is a wonderful study of the psyche of a Doomsdayer who is hoping for the end as a way to escape their perceived horrible existence. We have Elenin mixed with all type of fantasies, all absurd, with no scientific basis.

Elenin is not coming near to Earth, therfore to affect us it has to be something other than a comet, therefore it’s a Brown Dwarf. And many star systems are binary and some have Brown Dwarfs therefore Nibiru is a Brown Dwarf and it’s coming this year (of all years). Don’t worry that Nibiru is supposed to have a 3600 year orbit and Elenin’s is over 10,000 and that nothing happened 3600 years ago anyway (or 7200 or 10,800 etc).

Also we now have Elenin mixed with 2012 as well as Nibiru and the October date of its passage is really December 21st 2012 because the Mayans got it wrong, we misculated the start of the Long Count or we are not allowing for all the days that have been skipped in the last 2,000 years (due to whims of Roman Emperor’s etc).

And it’s all bound up beautiful into this crazy mixed up conspiracy that everyone on Earth with a telescope is hiding. But Elenin will come and go and many people will be faced with the fact that they still have to go to the job they hate and pay their mortgage.

I don’t understand why you’e all so fast to dismiss the possibility that this isn’t just a mere comet? As a matter of fact, this article from Nasa completely contradict’s information from Leonid Elenin himself. They say that it’ll be basically be next to impossible to spot without the right conditions, while he himself says that it might even reach a magnitude 0, the brightest a comet can get, which is easily visible by the naked eye.

    • Cloud, I didn’t write the article but everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I don’t make any scientific assessments of information based on Youtube videos, rapture dates, or end of the world times. Some people want this comet to be doomslayer because it pan-sears the May 2011 rapture date and the end of the world in 2011. No one knows when the world will end or when Christ will come and I’m not going to inflame fears for something that’s completely unwarranted, in my opinion. Those who believe the world will end with Elenin or they will be raptured this month…more power to them- it happens to not be a belief of mine. When these dates come and go, guess what? We’ll still be here sounding the alarm if God so wills.

I’m not particularly with the idea of the end of the world thing, but I do think awareness of events that will affect us should be our most prominent concern. And with Elenin in particular, our space agencies have not been able to tell a straight story since day one. To me, the most disturbing piece of evidence is not only the earthquakes that have happened when this thing aligns with us, but look back at the only 2 quakes that were so powerful, they were able to knock us off our axis some. Elenin was aligned with us perfectly in both occasions. if that isn’t somewhat of an indicator that we’re not being told the full truth, as well as two official sources on this ‘comet’ disagreeing entirely on something like this, then I don’t know what is. We all need to keep an open mind, because honestly we haven’t a clue what the real truth could be. We only know as we’re told, nothing more, unless we dig into it ourselves.

    • Which is what we should be doing anyway- checking things out for ourselves, youtube videos included. Everything should hold up to the rigors of the scientific method. I’ve watched the video and see nothing in there which would suggest this long-period visitor is going to rip the world to shreds. Earth is not the only planet that can experiences quakes and volcanism. Why is it only shaking up Earth? This is part of the nonsense that people are accepting as dogma because of a Youtube video. TV has become our teacher. What would a large comet do our planet? Nothing unless it was on a colision course with us, which this comet is not. For the sake of argument, let’s deal with size:

“There are different ways to measure a comet. The Hale Bopp Comet, for example has a nucleus of more than 60 miles in diameter, which is thought to be the biggest ever encountered, so far. And Comet Hyakutake‘s tail stretched out at a distance of more than 500 million km from the nucleus, the largest known. But now a group of scientists have identified a new category of measuring a comet’s size: the region of space disturbed by the comet’s presence. And for this class, first prize goes to Comet C/2006 P1 McNaught, which graced our skies in Janauary and February 2007. Of course, McNaught might win the prize for most picturesque comet, too, as this stunning image from Sebastian Deiries of ESO shows.” –Universe Today See picture of McNaught below:

If comet McNaught had an atmosphere the size of Jupiter and did nothing to the planet, why will something smaller wreak doomsday at 22 million miles? Comet McNaught made its closest approach to Earth between June-early July of 2007. The strongest earthquake the planet had in all of 2007 was an 8.5 in Sumatra, Indonesia in September and this was the largest comet ever seen by astronomers. Are you beginning to see the degree of hysteria and nonsense these Youtubers make who upload these video but have no scientific basis for their claims? Don’t believe everything you see on Youtube…

See, people make comments like “our space agencies have not been able to tell a straight story since day one” and “this article from Nasa completely contradict’s information from Leonid Elenin himself” without backing up the statement with proof. I’ve been monitoring the Elenin phenonemon since its discovery and I’ve noticed no flip-flopping on data provided by NASA, just updates as new data comes in, and no contradictions with statements from Leonid Elenin himself.

Elenin is viewable with a powerful amateur telescope, and is proven to be a comet, and not a Brown Dwarf. Therefore it just simply cannot affect us. If it was a Brown Dwarf then sure, its gravity would be massive and alignments would affect us and other planets. The fact is our solar system is not a binary system and if our sun had a companion Brown Dwarf we’d know about it due to its effects on the sun. It does not exist.

You can easily dismiss this whole thing as hysteria due to the desperate entanglements of myth and other End Of Days prophecies etc.

        1) Elenin is Nibiru. In Summerian cosmology Niburu ‘Marduk) is a planet, with moons, it is not a Brown Dwarf. Nibiru is on a 3600 year orbit, Elenin’s is way longer.

        2) Rapture, 2012 is 2011. You can thank Harold Camping for this one. He originally predicted the end of the world to be September 6th, 1994. Now he says October 21st 2011 with the “Rapture” being May 21st 2011. October 21st is close to when Elenin passes us so it lines up perfectly, never mind that Camping the fear-monger has called it before and has been wrong. The Mayan date of December 21st 2012 has been revised to October 21st 2011 by many citing that a few Roman Emperors (I forget who) skipped a few months here and there to realign the calendar. A valid theory, if only someone could prove it.

        3) Elenin, Mayans and 2012. The Mayans had a way of counting spatial time and their calendar supposedly ends on December 21st 2012. The Mayans never said this was the end of the world and another long count would have started. They just formulated this calendar and it happened to last 5125 years and that is it. Even if the Mayan end date is miscalculated and really is October 2011, it’s just a date. There are various fantasies floating around that each “Long Count” ended in a global catastrophie but I have never found a translated and cited piece to confirm this. The Long Count is a calendar and all calendars cycle.

You simply can’t take Elenin and mix it up with Nibiru, 2012, the Rapture and Armageddon and come out the end looking like you have full use of your faculties. It defies common sense and logic no matter what your esoteric beliefs might be.

Denial isn’t clouding your ability to connect Biblical Truth to what God is doing using His creation to set in motion the final end October 21, 2011. Calling it fear mongering is a moot point since it is Truth from God’s Word. Judgment day was May 21, 2011 as all the captives have been sent free (saved). The earthly church was condemned in 1988 and now the entire world. Maybe you were saved prior to May 21. Read the Word.

Hello, I have learned about this elenin thing a month ago. I was scared cause it is 44 times bigger they say.. Then I thought it is horrible. I hate my job too 🙂 I have quit, not just because of elenin ofcourse cause I was not happy, now looking for a new job and wish I could work at NASA…

by the way, I was scared, researched. Yes, it might have an effect; but I trust God, no matter what happens I am going to experience it.. And anyway maybe I am living in a hollographic universe of mine… These are all relative…

I’ve learned that SUN has a diameter 109 times the EARTH, that makes the sun a million times larger than earth.. so 44 times bigger comet would not do anything as coming closer…

But let’s say it affects, do a search there is also a concept named photon age; I wish that is true; it claims it is not the end, but a beginning of a 2 thousand years long new era… than follows a 10thousand years of normal era…

Let’s say these are not all true, whatever, these are exciting to follow, I wish photon age story is true, and I would experience bacause this world needs a CHANGE, absolutely,

Thank you for the latest updates 🙂

HAVE A NICE LIVING EXPERIENCE! as a human 🙂

Why all the stress? God made the world/universe to have a beginning and an end this will be natural and he will have planned for it. We are told the signs of the times and even though we are experiencing some of them by no means are we experiencing all yet. by the way not even Satan knows when the end of times is, that is why he has an anti Christ for every era. Evil will always be within and around us until the end, our greater concern should be with our inner battle rather than focusing so much on fearing we may suffer.

Wimpy? Look up the dates that this “comet” has aligned with the Sun and the Earth – does the Chile 8.9 earthquake and the Japan earthquake/tsunami/nuclear meltdown ring a bell? It doesn’t need to hit us, or even come close to have an effect on the earth.

Furthermore, I’m so sick of these “astronomers” and “scientists” telling us exactly what every light is in the sky: its a comet, its a meteor, this one’s an asteroid, this is a star, this is a binary star, and this is a planet, and this is another galaxy…. THEY’RE JUST BALLS OF LIGHT IN THE SKY! That’s it! Period. We can’t tell what a speck of light is that’s 45million lightyears away is, except for a speck of light. Don’t think they know just because they’re looking through high-powered telescopes.

“Oh, this star is made of helium and carbon because it burns this color.” REALLY? Ever been there? Of course not. Ever imagine that different elements exist outside of our planet? No, no, no. They are just looking at colored lights… They have no idea what that shit is! This is a mystery more deeply interwoven into our ancient history than we could imagine, and it is certainly not for the scientists to “figure out” and spoon-feed us.

      1) Coincidence. And the Elenin alignment was actually around the 15th – even if JPLs timeline is 100% correct – which it isn’t.

      2) No scientific data to support a theory that alignments of planets or our own sun causes planets.

      3) Yes, different compounds emit light on certain wavelengths and can be measured so we know what things are made of.

      4) Elenin is a comet but it’s appearance together with Honda still have significance. I don’t believe in any ELE type of event but there is no question that the earth is going through immense changes and there can be some correlation. I’m a big fan of Carl Calleman and I think alot of his theories are plausible. I encourage all to read his latest article:

It’s deep but I feel that he has really nailed it.

I have to ask some questions:

When was the last time a comet passed that close to the sun with the earth opposite to it?
What is this comet actually composed of?
How do we know we will not be affected by its debris field? Or the comet itself?
If NASA doesn’t know the exact path due to possible outside influences and can only extrapolate an orbit from what they presently know, how are we to know the exact path and outcome?
With all other comets that have been viewable, the hoopla has been in all the media. Why is this one different?
Do you actually think if this comet was an ELE, we would be informed?

    Thanks!

“When was the last time a comet passed that close to the sun with the earth opposite to it?”

      Please see: http://www.minorplanetcenter.net/iau/lists/ClosestComets.html

As you can see, comets pass by all the time and a lot closer that Elenin.

“What is this comet actually composed of?”

Same as all comets, ice and rock.

“How do we know we will not be affected by its debris field? Or the comet itself?”

Because no comet that passed by has ever affected us. There’s a small chance we might catch some debris but that would be more likely to be next year. The debris needs to be on the same orbital ecliptic as Earth and when it passes in front of us it’s already above us. It passes Earth orbit on August 2nd so maybe next year on that date we’ll see a meteor shower just as we see the Perseid Meteor shower on August 13 which is debris left over from comet Swift-Tuttle.

“If NASA doesn’t know the exact path due to possible outside influences and can only extrapolate an orbit from what they presently know, how are we to know the exact path and outcome?”

The orbit is pretty much done. As it gets closer and its mass can be fine-tuned the orbit may change by a few hundred miles here or there but it has no chance of suddenly veering off course by a few hundred thousand miles.

“With all other comets that have been viewable, the hoopla has been in all the media. Why is this one different?”

Because some people believe alignments with the comet cause earthquakes and the fact that the comet has “ELE” in the name is too much of a juicy fruit for conspiracy theorists not to nibble on.

“Do you actually think if this comet was an ELE, we would be informed?”

No, we probably wouldn’t be informed but the fact is this IS a comet, and it poses no danger to Earth.
