March 11, 2011 – JAPAN – A massive earthquake that struck off the coast of Japan Friday was the strongest quake in the area in nearly 1,200 years. David Applegate, a senior science adviser for earthquake and geologic hazards for the U.S. Geological Survey, said the 8.9-magnitude quake ruptured a patch of the earth’s crust 150 miles long and 50 miles across. He said the earthquake, which also spawned a massive tsunami that hit Japan before racing across the Pacific Ocean to Hawaii and the West Coast of the United States, likely caused tens of billions of dollars in structural damage in Japan. Laura K. Furgione, deputy director for the National Weather Service, said the tsunami first hit Hawaii early Friday morning. An 8.1-foot wave destroyed piers and docks in Crescent City, Calif., later Friday sweeping at least 4 people out to sea. –AP

Kia – The more instability and geological deformation we have on the planet; the more the chances of such an unthinkable incident increases because such large quakes can do two very dangerous things to the planet, besides crack a polar ice mass- They can reduce angular momentum or they can exaggerate the planet’s axis of inclination. Yes, the crust could slip over the mantle, possibly from a ‘lurch event’ where the planet crust is heaved forward in excess acceleration of the mantle from a large violent quake under the ocean.

There would be some agitation across the Pacific and Cascadian region if any. We’re almost flying blind with the world’s seismometers now indiscernible. Typically, in such cases you look for areas that could alleviate the most stress along a boundary as stress points.

Not yet, and you’ll know about it when it happens because the stress will rip a large portion of the planet where the force is concentrated to pieces. Land, wind, lava and water will be expelled forward in the reaction. Imagine today’s tsunami wave x 100.

I think its negligible but if the quakes starting cascading…the dynamics of the planet could start shifting. Multiple rocket launch failures —-Rocket launches will have to move closer to the equator and the escape velocity of the planet will change will be some obvious clues.

Kathy made a comment about British Columbia. I too, am from BC and am wondering the same thing. The San Andres Fault goes up the west coast, mostly on land and then it swings out (west)into the ocean around lower Oregon and continues north up the outside of Vancouver island. We have not had a major earthquake and I am wondering if we need to be as concerned as the folks in California? Since the fault runs on the outside of the Island and the Island has a mountain range between it and the Mainland (City of Vancouver) should the folks on the mainland be concerned? You’re welcome Deb. My advice to everyone is have a back-pack ready with all necessary survival provisions in it. We know all tectonic plates are adjoining and sooner or later, it’s going to ripple across the planet. So don’t get too hung-up on the idea of a magical safe haven. This is going to turn many of us into environmental refugees and I assure you it will go global.

Some questions. First, was this Japanese 9.1 “merely” the Earth saying either “Boy, my pants are too tight now! Better loosen!” or “Whoop! Gotta burp. Hang on a second…”? Or passing gas? Or that one side of its bum is falling asleep and so it has to “change sides” in its seating position? And each relieving act is followed by something loud with a large release of energy. Pardon my crude examples.
The question I’m trying to form is that isn’t this a “common” thing in nature? And once the pressures are “fixed,” Earth normalcy can set in. However, if these normal, pressure-relieving occurrences happening now are happening a lot more frequently, is that, too, necessarily a herald of unnatural Earth woe? I haven’t yet read your book.

Steve, unfortunately it’s not normal and we when look at the aggregate picture- it becomes easy to see why. Look around the world and every governmental branch of science has its own separate department. I’m sure you’re familiar with the parable of the 5 blind men and the elephant. While I’m not being critical of the studious and academic nature of our seasoned science professionals who have devoted their lives to warning the public about potential dangers to life and limb, I’m saying you have to study the planet as a holistic system- not in pieces as a mechanical clock to make a proper diagnosis. That’s why science will never reach a consensus on what is happening to the planet. Look at the disarray around the globe on the climate debate issue. Large quakes have happened before in Earth’s recorded history…but you’ll be hard-pressed to find a case where two massive quakes in a 13 month span tilted the planet’s axis by a total of 33 cm. 2010 was a record year for volcanic eruptions, the most I’ve documented in recorded history. Terrestrial planets are ruled by thermal forces of fire not ice or water unless they’re geologically static. Quakes do more than shake the ground; they excite magmatic pressures- which raises thermal and gas pressures. When you increase thermodynamic properties, you accelerate a system towards the spectrum of disorder. It reaches a new chaotic state that is not only irreversible but it is also alien to its former state. Planetary inclinational tilts don’t reverse and massive faults don’t repair themselves- instead, they are further manipulated by geological forces to push the planet towards greater catastrophism.

Thanks for finding us Tim. Some 200 quakes occur along the New Madrid each year and it is no doubt one of the most dangerous faults in North America. Being in Iowa, you are outside the octo-radius of the states which converge along the fault’s circumference Will there be an eruption? Definitely, we just don’t know when…it will likely come from a stressor and could involve the shifting of the North American plate or a quake in S. Eastern Canada. This is an enormous fracture and has a turbulent and very violent past seismic history. A quake could also strike the region with little or no warning. As what’s happening around the globe with major quakes intensifies, become a little more aware of the region. I always say, live in awareness not fear.

Sir, I thank you for your work and better than normal information. My question for you is my concern about the Yellowstone caldera. I don’t particularly like where I am living (salt lake) and the proximity to what is described as a severe threat to life on north America. Do you think there will be another huge eruption and do you think it will give any warning.

Yes, Ed I do believe Yellowstone will erupt but during the latter half of these earthchanges. I think the point of escalation of events will be so common by then, that everything will be on a hair-trigger. We’ll know because events will start sweeping across the globe in rapid succession. Yellowstone is particularily vunerable to the North American plate sliding over it. Tectonic plate agitation is increasing and will continue to do so as planetary conditions tilt toward more events. I think the warning will come from tremor swarms but we also need to watch what is transpiring with tectonic plates globally. The problem with the swarms is that they have been commonplace at Yellowstone and geologists may think the next big episode is one more casuality of the volcanic boy crying wolf.

Quick question for ya man with the large earthquake that happened in Japan shifting the crust, would that mean that North American Plate will within a few months; or however long it takes for the crusts to move; aggravate the Yellowstone Volcano from shifting the direction toward Japan? Then in the end all situations of things to come if the New Madrid Fault goes next and the plate moves back toward the east coast to cover things up really make things a bit crazy? Which even if the Madrid Fault wouldnt have been a violent eruption at first, I had seen a video about the Gulf area of the states generally being very weak non compact rock. Would it be possible for the oil spill seeping into the states and possibly into the fault lubricating the area making it much more likely to be a violent act? Dunno just kinda adding possibilities together and this was just a off the wall possibility ive thought of. Great site by the way keep the info coming man!

Steve, this involves many interfacing systems and the dynamics of their complexity. It’s impossible to adequately sum up in the brevity of what these post replies affords. However, I can tell you what it is not causing it. It is not the work of some maurading planet or because the Earth is eclipsing the galactic plane.

The danger for the North Island is the potential ignition of a volcanic firestorm, including a Taupo reawakening. The danger for the South Island is a fracture of the land mass from plate shifting. These are possibilities if this crisis reaches an omega trigger. I can find similar scenarios for nearly every continental land mass on the planet including Antarctica, so no one should live in fear or alter their living plans. There will be plenty of signs ‘if‘ anything like this ever did happen.

Scientists and seismologists have the mind set that there have no connection between the regional weather changes and the respective regional quakes.However, every individual regional weather changes are followed by the specific regional individual quakes.It is quite possible to predicts quakes scientifically and precisely based on the regional weather changes.The M8.9 have not come any all of a sudden but it had the process since Jan.1 this year. I warned twice this catastrophe event – one on Feb28 (M>5) and another on March 8 (M>6) but no scientists and seismologists belonged to countries badly affected by quakes heed my appeal. My latest warning on Mar.8 in response to the 1000mm rain in Science garden in Luzon, northern Philippines.
With the series of recorded weather changes – heavy rain in Japan, South Korea and Northern Philippines, heaviest snowfall in more than a century on South Korea’s east coast and in Japan and the explosion of Kirishima Volcano, Kyushu (Location: 31.931°N, 130.864°E), I continuously warned the Seismologists worldwide about the possibilities of strong quakes with the specific location eastern coast of Honshu and north of Philippines. But no one take interest.
The onset of any regional weather changes set a time scale of advancing the regional quakes usually within 15 to 30 days. However, in a very few cases the time scales and magnitude do vary substantially as a consequence of local site geology and other factors. For other regions too I warned timely, but no one take care.
Here I just attached the tabulation of the list of series of recorded weather changes around Honshu , Japan that culminated into devastating quakes and tsunami.

Just a week long careful analysis is enough for the scientists and seismologists to understand the relation that exist between the regional weather changes and the subsequent regional quakes.

I live in Japan, Kanto area, approximately 200 ~ 250 km. from the devastated area. I experienced the earthquake at a magnitude of around 7.9 the day it occurred. I am not an expert in Geophysics and I am having trouble grasping the gravity of these occurrences. The Japanese experts have informed everyone that the next big earthquake will be within the next 10 years near Kanto, Chiba area. This earthquake will have the same magnitude as the Honshu earthquake and cause the same amount of devastation. Currently, one of the nuclear plants near my area is being shut-down. I would very much appreciate your expert advice/insight regarding Japan`s next earthquake.

I don’t think it will be 10 years before the next big earthquake L.Matsuura. Your country and your culture has been a flower to the world. Either two things will happen- either another large earthquake will cause more volcanoes to erupt or the eruption of a massive amount of volcanoes will signal approaching geological upheavel. I think volcanism should be monitored very closely as I have said a month before the March 11 earthquake that Japan had entered a new period of geological upheaval. If you watch events closely, you will see the signs of an escalation of events and in the back of your mind, in a worst case scenario, you have to prepare yourself for the future potential of leaving the islands if events take a turn for the worst in the future. Don’t lose any sleep over events now…and live in awareness of your surroundings; not in fear.

Thank you for your take on things. I am curious are you aware of the seismic implications of sub sea and sub permafrost methane hydrate deposits? There has been alot of experimental drilling around Japan and ALOT of other places, for example the Gulf of Mexico (Leg III JIP {Joint Industry Project} GOM) The vast deposits of methane hydrate on our little rock spinning through space are thought by some scientist to have played a catalyst role in mass extinction in the geological record. Methane is currently escaping from perforated permafrost in Russia, and methane hydrate is currently dissociating by the teragrams at Bush Hill in GOM to name a couple of places. Hydrate deposits cooccur with mud volcanoes often. Vast impermeable layers of fire ice holding back gas reserviors as big as the rigel field definitely would seem to have seismic implications. (Especially since oil companies drill though ancient hydrate layers with only partial understanding of the phenomenon they are messing with.) There was a methane hydrate research and development act, enacted in America back in 2000. Worth learning about for anyone who is unaware of the nature and unimaginably vast amounts of methane hydrate under our icecaps and ocean floors.

I wrote about frozen methyl hydrates in my book and the dangers of it exsolving as with the sublimation of permafrost- in both cases; we’re looking at nightmare scenarios with the massive release of CH4. An Oceanic Anoxic Event was believe to have been a culprit in the Permian mass extinction.
